turaga and matoran

matoran

Villagers on MATA NUI, METRU NUI, VOYA NUI, MAHRI NUI, and elsewhere. There are many known types of Matoran. Among them are the main seven whom represent the primary elements: Ta-Matoran, villagers of Fire; Ga-Matoran, villagers of Water; Le-Matoran, villagers of Air; Ko-Matoran, villagers of Ice; Onu-Matoran, villagers of Earth; Po-Matoran, villagers of Stone; and the Av-Matoran, villagers of KARDA NUI and the element tribe of Light. Matoran are the only beings so far shown to be able to evolve into TOA. While groups of six Matoran, one from each village, are capable of merging into the MATORAN NUI.

Matoran were the first creation of the Great Beings. The leavings from the process that brought them into being were used to create Krana and Zyglak creatures. Matoran built ARTAKHA, KARZAHNI, Metru Nui, and many other cities in the Matoran universe below ground.

Origins of the Matoran species

Upon discovering that Spherus Magna was doomed to be fragmented and split apart by the shattering, the Great Beings began to work tirelessly on a solution to their predicament. Their solution was none other than the Great Spirit Mata Nui. However, even a titanic being such as him could not accomplish this mission alone, thus leading to the creation of the Matoran. Small biomechanical creatures based on the anatomy of the Agori beings on Spherus Magna.

Before they initialise the construction of the universe inside the Great Spirit Robot, the Great Beings would need to perfect the design of the Matoran. This process started with the creation of the first of their kind, a Matoran named Takua. Takua was among the first of many variations of the Matoran Species. Each variation was based on a specific element, with Takua's being the element of Light. Av-Matoran, as they would come to be called, were first created as the prototypes for the Matoran Species; resulting in them having greater powers and abilities in comparison to later versions of the species.

Unlike other breeds, Av-Matoran could use their elemental abilities while for other Matoran, they are completely dormant until becoming Toa. The only real downside to being an Av-Matoran, however, was that they had the chance of becoming insectoid creatures called Bohrok. Who, unlike the Matoran, were mindless drones. However, they can therefore choose to remain Av-Matoran as their permanent and final evolution; without becoming Bohrok.

In time, the Matoran were put to work inside the Great Spirit Robot, building the universe that would soon become their new home. As they worked, the Av-Matoran would be followed up by more kinds of Matoran who were smaller in stature and lacked any active elemental abilities. For their hard work constructing this new universe, the Matoran became the chosen species of the Great Spirit and this new world named the Matoran Universe in their honour.

The Matoran may look small in size or stature but in reality, the world they play in the grand scheme of the universe is quite enormous. Without the Matoran, Mata Nui would slowly wither away and die. Leaving the world's Spherus Magna shattered and broken for eternity. It's the Matoran in their work that prevent this from ever occurring. Through their everyday efforts, the Matoran sustain Mata Nui's body and keep him functioning correctly. If the Matoran were to stop working, Mata Nui's health would be negatively affected. Therefore endangering the Great Spirit as well as the universe inside of him.

This was demonstrated during the Great Disruption. An event where the Matoran of Metru Nui quit their work to fight each other in a civil war. What would save Mata Nui in the end was the intervention made by the Brotherhood of Makuta and Jovan's team of Toa whom retrieved the fail-safe device known as the Mask of Life. The mask restored the Great Spirit to full health. But one of Jovan's teammates, however, "died" from using the mask. This incident goes to show that if Matoran failed to complete their duty, Mata Nui and the rest of the universe will suffer for it.

The Matoran are often assigned to specific jobs to better organise themselves ensuring that work gets done and the safety of Mata Nui isn't jeopardised. However, the Matoran may still be threatened by other species and creatures living within the Matoran Universe. It's for this reason that the Toa were created to protect the Matoran.

Most Matoran idolised and followed the teachings of Mata Nui whom they view almost as a god over their people. Showing their loyalty by following the Three Virtues of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. They've also been known to hold events and gatherings in the name of the Great Spirit. Typically, Matoran have been known to keep good relations with the Toa since it's necessary for them both to accomplish their tasks. If the Toa failed to protect the Matoran and they won't be able to work and sustain Mata Nui and if the Matoran don't trust the Toa, it'll be more difficult to protect them.

Though in the absence of a Toa, the Matoran have known to organise themselves based on their element. So in the Matoran settlements scattered throughout the Matoran Universe, each population usually consist of one type of Matoran. The amount of interaction among these settlements completely depends on the situation. If the areas between locales are unsafe, then there's generally less mingling between the villages and Matoran. But if the island is well protected from wildlife and other dangers, practices of trading and communication among multiple settlements are quite common.

The Matoran, although real small and in stature, are very hard working and therefore can do so for long periods. To sustain themselves, the Matoran not only need food which they absorb through physical contact instead of eating with their mouths, but they also require powerless Kanohi Masks to prevent them from ever becoming weakened or entering into a comatose state. Unlike masks worn by Toa and Turaga, the Matorans don't have any powers since they lack the mental discipline to use proper Kanohi.

Instead of an organic heart, the Matoran have a power plant inside their bodies that contains their life force. However, they do still have organic elements such as the lungs, muscles, and multiple other organs. Similar to human beings, the Matoran also need to breathe oxygen and drink water or liquid protodermis to survive. They do sleep as well but they require less time due to their bodies being partially mechanical.

However, as long as they are maintained correctly, the Matoran shouldn't experience any physical ageing from the prolonged views of their mechanical portions. Although its unknown if the Matoran experience any type of mental ageing.

The Matoran as a species can vary in size and shape depending on where they're from. But the average height of the Matoran is about four and a half feet tall. These metrics have been known to change under certain circumstances but those are somewhat few and far between. Most Matoran are typically good natured due to their devotion to Mata Nui. But there have been examples of Matoran who've succumbed to their greed or their desires.

The Matoran Species were also created with social skills that they need to accomplish their everyday work such as language to communicate with their fellow Matoran.

However, due to their advanced species, their Matoran culture became over-sophisticated and therefore highly-advanced due to a sinister tampering to their intelligence. Made by a mysterious yet sinister Great Being calling himself "Velika".

the metru matoran

Matoran whom lived on the island city of Metru Nui. Until they were captured by the Makuta himself (Teridax) and forced into sleeping pods known as Matoran Spheres. There they were thrown into a form of suspended animation. This lasted until they were brought to Mata Nui and awakened by the TOA METRU. Over time, Matoran's bodies shrank in stature and they lost all memory of their lives on Metru Nui, after-effects of their time in the spheres.

They then built six villages, or "Koro", on the island of Mata Nui. And lived there for 1,000 years. Much of it spent fighting off Rahi sent by the Makuta. The Matoran universally welcomed the coming of Tahu and his team of Toa, believing they would reawaken Mata Nui and defeat the Makuta.

Following the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal, the Turaga taught the Matoran how to rebuild themselves so that they could be stronger and more agile. It is believed the Turaga may have learned this from the Rahaga at some point in the past.

takua

An Av-Matoran, former Chronicler, and currently Takanuva, the Toa of Light. During the time slip, he was transported to Metru Nui in the guise of a Ta-Matoran and given false memories of life in the city. He worked in Ta-Metru as a toolmaker and operated a small business offering souvenirs from other Metru he had picked up in his wanderings. Unfortunately, since he often made these trips during his working hours, he attracted a lot of attention from Vahki patrols. A running joke in Ta-Metru was that an entire squad was assigned just to keep watch on Takua. On Mata Nui, Takua continued to be more interested in exploring than working. But his life changed when the Turaga asked him to travel the island and collect the Toa Stones. These had been hidden long before by the Toa Metru, but the Turaga believed that Teridax might attempt to steal them.

Takua carried out his task and brought all six stones to Kini-Nui. When he placed them there, beams of light shot up into the sky. Takua was carried high in the air by one of the beams, then slammed onto the ground, the blow resulting in amnesia. Without realising it, Takua had succeeded in summoning Tahu and the rest of the Toa from the sea, where they had been floating in canisters for 1,000 years.

Stripped of his memory again, Takua stumbled into more adventures as he wandered the island. He helped to save Ga-Matoran trapped underwater, aided Onu-Matoran miners, aided Po-Matoran dealing with infected comet balls, and helped save the Le-Matoran and Toa Lewa from Nui-Rama. As a reward for his service, he was named Chronicler of the Toa. One of his first acts was to form the Chronicler's Company to aid in the defence of the island.

When the Toa went to battle Teridax underground, the Chronicler's Company was assigned to defend Kini-Nui from the Rahi attack. Before going below, Toa Gali established a mind link with Takua so he would be aware of all that went on and could keep an accurate record.

After the defeat of the Rahi, Takua journeyed down to Mangaia to witness the Toa's fight with the Makuta. He saw both this and the awakening of the Bohrok, and barely escaped with his life. During the Bohrok invasion, Takua aided the Le-Matoran and the Ga-Matoran. He and his best friend, Jaller, journeyed with Tahu for a brief time after the appearance of the Bohrok-Kal. Takua's greatest adventure began when he wandered off before a Kohlii match and found a lava cave. Fascinated by a strange stone marker, he was investigating it when Jaller found him. Stumbling, he dropped the marker, which dissolved in the lava to reveal the Kanohi Avohkii, the legendary Mask of Light.

Although the mask's illumination clearly fell on Takua, marking him as the Herald of the Seventh Toa, he did not want the responsibility. He convinced the Turaga that it was Jaller who was meant to be the herald. Together, the two were sent by Turaga Vakama to find the Toa of Light and bring him his mask. Accompanied by Pewku, Takua's pet ussal crab, they set out. Their journey took them through Le-Wahi and Ko-Wahi and Onu-Wahi, dodging Rahkshi along the way. It became clear that Rahkshi were seeking the herald and the mask.

Takua continued to refuse to accept responsibility for the quest, even going so far as to quit the journey entirely at one point after Teridax warned him that continuing would cost Jaller his life. It was, in fact, Jaller's sacrifice that saved Takua from the red Rahkshi called Turahk and made the Matoran realise what he must do. As Jaller lay dying, Takua donned the Mask of Light and transformed into Toa Takanuva (something that could only happen to a destined Av-Matoran). Vakama later told him that after being a Chronicler for so long, "you have finally found your own story."

Spherus Magna

As Toa Takanuva, he is currently living on Spherus Magna with the rest of the Matoran Universe's inhabitants.

jala.jpg

jala (later renamed as jaller)

Former Ta-Matoran captain of the Ta-Koro Guard, later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Fire.

Jaller was employed as a tool maker in Metru Nui and was close friends with Takua, another worker. He was often kept busy covering for Takua's wanderings with the Vahki to keep his friend out of trouble. During transport to Mata Nui, Jaller's Kanohi Mask was badly damaged. Turaga Vakama replaced his mask with the late Turaga Lhikan's Noble Hau. (Being a Matoran, Jaller could not access the powers of the mask.) Jaller rapidly became an important figure during the construction of Ta-Koro, helping to defend the site from Rahi attacks. Vakama appointed him captain of the Ta-Koro guard, a position he held for over 1,000 years. He showed great heroism during the Bohrok invasion, aiding the village of Ga-Koro against a Pahrak attack.

He was rewarded with a name change during Naming Day ceremonies. Prior to an important Kolhii match, Jaller went in search of the missing Takua only to find him in a forbidden lava cavern. He was there when Takua stumbled upon the legendary Mask of Light; concealed in a stone which the Toa Metru transported it to from Metru Nui. Unwilling to accept responsibility for being herald of the Toa of Light, Takua tricked the Turaga into believing it was Jaller's destiny to fulfill that role. Jaller got even by insisting Takua accompany him on his search for the Seventh Toa. The two braved many dangers on their quest, including encounters with an Ash Bear, Rahkshi, and Teridax himself.

During the final battle between the Toa Nuva and the Rahkshi, Jaller sacrificed his life to save Takua. Later, Takutanuva, a merged entity made up of Takanuva and Teridax, gave up part of its life force to restore life to Jaller. Since that time, the valiant Ta-Matoran has helped to oversee the construction of transport craft for the return to Metru Nui. After arriving there and the subsequent disappearance of the Toa Nuva, Jaller assembled a rescue party of five other Matoran alongside the Toa of Light, Takanuva. When Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran, and faced the evil Karzahni later on, they eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika.

As a Toa Mahri, Jaller went on to battle the Barraki underwater in Mahri Nui for possession of the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit Mata Nui and the Matoran Universe.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later, Jaller evacuated the Matoran Universe along with the Skakdi and is currently on Spherus Magna. He then traveled with the Skakdi to a beach where he, although enslaved, witnessed the golden being create a fortress on the cliff. After witnessing the Mahri's subservience to the gold being as it was passing by, Kopaka informed the Toa Hagah of this situation, and they promised him that they would do everything in their power to snap the Toa Mahri out of whatever trance the creature had placed them under. Ultimately, the Golden Being's hold on them was disrupted during its battle with Annona, and the Toa Mahri were freed. Eventually, the Toa Nuva returned Lhikan's original Hau to him, although it is unknown if Jaller kept his Arthron or switched it out for his old mask.

Dark Mirror

Jaller, still a Matoran, ventured to Artakha to retrieve the Kanohi Vahi. The parallel Teridax referred to the parallel Jaller as a "fanatic".

On a quest to retrieve the Kanohi Vahi for the Makuta in the Archives, Takanuva intercepted the Ussal cart and convinced his Toa escorts, Bomonga and Kualus, that he was sent by Tuyet to help guard the Vahi. When he finally gave away that he wasn't a part of the empire by speaking out, he was saved by Lesovikk, who defeated the Toa and destroyed the cart.

The Kingdom

Jaller had helped Matoro by giving him time to get the Ignika to where it should go, but Matoro had hesitated, for a second, and the entrance to Karda Nui was cut off. Matoro then teleported the team back to Metru Nui. They gained a somewhat bad reputation, due to their association with Matoro.

The Toa Mahri helped Tahu and Kopaka drive away several Rahkshi that killed Hewkii and Pohatu. He eventually met Toa Takanuva, who helped him by telling him about the Walls of History in every district to help him learn about the history of The Kingdom.

maku.jpg

maku (later renamed as macku)

A Ga-Matoran known for her canoe racing and navigational skills. On Metru Nui, she received special permission to run her own business offering canoe tours of the coastline. On Mata Nui, she excelled in the Ngalawa canoe racing tournaments. Macku helped save her village from a Rahi attack by sending Takua to aid other Ga-Matoran while she sought out Toa Gali. Later, she served as part of the Chronicler's Company and helped defend Kini-Nui against Rahi attack. Macku joined with Hahli to form Ga-Koro's winning Kolhii team.

Spherus Magna

Macku evacuated the Matoran Universe and is currently living on Spherus Magna with the other Ga-Matoran and the Water Tribe in the Great Sea.

kongu.jpg

kongu

Former Le-Matoran hero, later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Air.

On Metru Nui, Kongu was simply another worker, assigned to oversee the chut controls in the Moto-Hub. The only excitement in his life came when he was captured by the Dark Hunters Nidhiki and Krekka and forced to reverse the flow in the chutes in an effort to trap the Toa Metru. On Mata Nui, Kongu developed an incredible skill at dealing with Rahi. He became the best bird wrangler in all of Le-Koro and captain of the Gukko Bird Force. Kongu aided Takua on a rescue mission to save other Matoran from a Nui-Rama nest. Later, he was part of a successful to save Toa Lewa, Turaga Matau, and other Le-Matoran from being controlled by the Bohrok swarm through the Krana they had been forced to wear. Kongi worked with Tamaru, Takua, and Nuparu on this dangerous task, which was credited with saving the entire Koro.

Following the return to Metru Nui, Kongu was one of five Matoran alongside Takanuva, Toa of Light, to rescue the missing Toa Nuva. Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran, and then the Matoran faced the evil Karzahni later on. They eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika. Striking their transport canisters from lightning before reaching the shores of Voya Nui.

As a Toa Mahri, they went on to battle the Barraki underwater in Mahri Nui for possession of the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit Mata Nui and the Matoran Universe.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later, Kongu evacuated the Matoran Universe along with the Skakdi and the rest of the Toa Mahri onto Spherus Magna. However, their passing was noticed by Kopaka Nuva, who later informed the Toa Hagah. They then promised him that they would do their best to liberate the Toa Mahri from the golden being's thrall. Ultimately, the Golden Being's hold on them was disrupted during its battle with Annona, and the Toa Mahri were freed.

onepu.jpg

Onepu

An Onu-Matoran. Onepu served as an archivist in Metru Nui, but did not have the patience for the work. He preferred to be out capturing Rahi rather than just waiting for them to be brought in by Vahki. He was best known for leading an expedition that discovered an intact Bohrok nest beneath Le-Metru. On Mata Nui, Onepu was appointed captain of the ussalry, the Onu-Matoran defence force. He established himself as a great rider of Ussal crabs and was a five-time winner of the Great Ussal Race. Following the Matoran's return to Metru Nui Onepu helped to rebuild the city until the Staff of Artakha did the rest of the work. He was also present during the ceremony for Matoro.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later he evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.

kapura.jpg

kapura

Kapura was a Ta-Matoran native to Metru Nui. In Metru Nui, Kapura worked in Ta-Metru, manning the vat controls and, during the Morbuzahk's attacks, searching abandoned areas of Ta-Metru for any objects of value he could take back somewhere safe. Kapura was the first to discover the Morbuzahk doing this. He was put into a Matoran Sphere by the Vahki just before the Great Cataclysm, but was later rescued by the Toa Metru. As a member of the Ta-Koro Guard on Mata Nui, Kapura was considered by some in Ta-Koro to be a bit strange, but Turaga Vakama had great confidence in the odd Matoran and had appointed him to stand at his left side.

Through the guidance and wisdom of the Turaga and lots of practice, Kapura learned the secret art of traveling very quickly. His slow and deliberate way always remained true to his purpose and he was surprisingly thoughtful, contributing simple but profound wisdom from time to time. Kapura was the first member of the Chronicler's Company. He was the deputy Captain of the Guard in case something happened to Jaller. He participated in the Battle of Kini-Nui at the end of the Matoran-Rahi War.

Kapura was evacuated from Ta-Koro along with the other Matoran when the Rahkshi destroyed it. Along with the other Matoran, Kapura later returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artakha did the rest. Kapura was also in the ceremony held for Matoro at the Coliseum.

He was in the Coliseum when Teridax announced his takeover of Mata Nui.

Reign of Shadows

Macku summoned Kapura and Hafu and introduced them to Tuyet. Together, they formed an alliance. Tuyet showed them a rock about the size of her fist, telling them that she could overthrow Teridax and that she had been dead for 2,000 years. They later met up with Lewa, who was really Tren Krom. Kapura was overjoyed, but Hafu was doubtful. The four then arrived at the Core Processor where Helryx was held. Tren Krom then freed Miserix from his illusion and revealed who he was. Helryx then told the two Matoran to leave. Hafu was going to argue, but Kapura stopped him. Before they could exit, Axonn and Brutaka appeared as well. Arguing about the fate of the Universe, two sides were drawn with Helryx, Miserix and Axonn wanting to destroy Teridax, and Brutaka, Tuyet and Tren Krom wanting to leave the Universe alive. Artakha appeared and stopped the fighting. He then returned the real Lewa to his body. Soon after, Teridax asked them all to leave and when they refused they were teleported into the space above Aqua Magna.

As he was not being teleported with the others, Lewa grabbed onto Brutaka and was teleported with them. He created air bubbles around everyone's heads. They were then saved by Vezon and brought to a tower on Bota Magna, and encountered a Great Being who had been cursed by the Ignika. The Great Being's curse gave life to a wall, which grabbed hold of Kapura.

Dark Mirror

In an alternate timeline where Toa were dictators, Kapura was a slave to the Toa Empire. He encountered the Takanuva of the main timeline, whom Kapura thought was going to arrest him. After much pleading and groveling, Kapura was flash-frozen by Toa Mata Kopaka and taken into custody.

The Kingdom

In an alternate timeline where Matoro failed to resuscitate the Great Spirit Mata Nui, Kapura migrated to the surface of the island of Mata Nui with the rest of the Matoran Universe's inhabitants. There, Takanuva successfully drove back the Brotherhood of Makuta and fulfilled his destiny. He thus sacrificed his Toa Power to create a new generation of Toa, including Kapura, who was transformed into a Toa of Fire.

kopeke.jpg

kopeke

A highly respected Ko-Matoran carver, known for his ice bridges and sculptures in honour of Toa Kopaka. On Metru Nui, Kopeke worked at a variety of jobs, including messenger and chute station attendant. But it was on Mata Nui that his true artistic gifts began to show themselves. In addition to being a fine sculptor, Kopeke was also an athlete. He excelled at both Huai Snowball Sling and Kohlii Sports. Kopeke served as part of the Chronicler's Company and helped to defend the Kini-Nui temple in the Matoran-Rahi war. He now serves as the new Chronicler after Hahli and Takanuva (formerly Takua) on Metru Nui.

Replacement of the new mask

After the conflict with the Bohrok-Kal, Kopeke was rebuilt along with the other Matoran into a stronger form. His mask was broken during Kohlii practice, and was replaced with a new one, a powerless Noble Matatu, to honor Turaga Nuju. Hahli met Kopeke during the Great Kohlii Tournament, and attempted to engage in conversation with the Ko-Matoran; however, Kopeke, true to form, saw no reason to speak to her.

He and the other Matoran later evacuated the Matoran Universe and he is now living on Spherus Magna.

tamaru.jpg

tamaru

A friendly, fast-talking Le-Matoran, Tamaru once dreamed of being an airship pilot in Metru Nui. Unfortunately, he washed out of training due to a fear of heights. He later opened his own shop, Tamaru's Transports, renting and selling used vehicles and failed test-track prototypes. On Mata Nui, Tamaru similarly failed to become a Gukko rider and ended up working as the keeper of the Le-Koro throwing disk range. He served as part of the Chronicler's Company, a small force assembled by Takua to protect the Kini-Nui temple during the Matoran-Rahi war. Later, he was one of only two Le-Matoran who were not captured by the Bohrok and fitted with a mind-controlling Krana. He joined with the other Le-Matoran, Kongu, along with Takua and Nuparu to lure Toa Lewa, Turaga Matau, and the rest of the Le-Matoran into a trap and remove their Krana mask.

Tamaru returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until it was repaired by the Staff of Artakha.

Spherus Magna

After helping Matoran in the Archives, he evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.

hahli.jpg

hahli

Former Ga-Matoran Chronicler of the Toa Nuva's adventures after Takanuva; later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Water.

Prior to the coming of the Toa, Hahli spent most of her time fishing and mending nets, too shy to voice her ideas or opinions. But she was thrust into danger during the Bohrok invasion and worked with Macku to prevent the Pahrak from entering Ga-Koro. Following the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal, Hahli was unexpectedly tapped by Turaga Nokama to play on the Ga-Koro Kohlii team. Hahli led her team to victory against Po-Koro and Ta-Koro squads. She had formed a close friendship with Jaller, captain of the Ta-Koro Guard, at this time, though the relationship had not progressed beyond that. After Takua became Takanuva, Hahli stowed away on board his Ussanui Vehicle to Teridax's lair. There she revealed herself to him and offered to be his Chronicler. He sent her back to the surface to gather the other Toa, the Turaga, and the Matoran and bring them down with her. This she did, returning in time to see Takanuva and Teridax merge into Takutanuva. A merged entity.

Hahli was one of the Matoran who passed through the gateway leading to the shores of the silver sea around Metru Nui. She carried the late Jaller's mask with her. Takutanuva stopped her and used part of his life force to bring Jaller back to life. After that time, Hahli has served as Chronicler, present for almost all of Turaga Vakama's tales of Metru Nui. Following the return to Metru Nui,

Hahli was one of five Matoran alongside Takanuva, Toa of Light, to rescue the missing Toa Nuva. Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran, and then the Matoran faced the evil Karzahni later on. They eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika. Striking their transport canisters from lightning before reaching into the shores of Voya Nui.

As a Toa Mahri, she went on to battle the Barraki underwater in Mahri Nui for possession of the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit Mata Nui and the Matoran Universe.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later, Hahli evacuated the Matoran Universe along with the Skakdi and the rest of the Toa Mahri onto Spherus Magna. However, their passing was noticed by Kopaka Nuva, who later informed the Toa Hagah. They then promised him that they would do their best to liberate the Toa Mahri from the golden being's thrall. Ultimately, the Golden Being's hold on them was disrupted during its battle with Annona, and the Toa Mahri were freed.

nuparu.jpg

nuparu

Former Onu-Matoran inventor, later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Earth.

Nuparu was employed as a Rahi Recieving Official in the Onu-Metru Archives in Metru Nui, but he could not suppress a natural talent for invention and engineering. He designed the Kralhi, the Vahki, the Kraahu, and the Kranua, all of which were constructed in Po-Metru. Nuparu's curiosoty sometimes led him into dangerous situations. While searching the Archives sublevels for Rahkshi pieces, he stumbled upon a large crack in one of the sea walls through which liquid protodermis was leaking. Returning to the surface, he warned Toa Whenua. The Toa Metru went belowground in response to his report and encountered Krahka, the shapeshifting Rahi, for the first time. On Mata Nui, Nuparu was best known for inventing the Boxor. This one-Matoran vehicle was used by villagers to combat the Bohrok and Bohrok Va. Nuparu's greatest regret is that he never got to see an Exo-Toa in person, as he would have loved to have studied its design and possibly reproduced it in some form.

Unknown to the Turaga, Nuparu salvaged some of the wreckage of those armoured suits and brought it with him on the return journey to Metru Nui. After arriving there and subsequent disappearance of the Toa Nuva, Nuparu joined with Jaller and four other Matoran alongside Toa Takanuva on a mission to find the missing heroes. However, Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran and return to Metru Nui, and then the Matoran faced the evil Karzahni later on. They eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika. Striking their transport canisters from lightning before reaching the shores of Voya Nui.

As a Toa Mahri, Nuparu went on to battle the Barraki underwater in Mahri Nui for possession of the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit Mata Nui and the Matoran Universe.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later, Nuparu evacuated the Matoran Universe along with the Skakdi and the rest of the Toa Mahri onto Spherus Magna. However, their passing was noticed by Kopaka Nuva, who later informed the Toa Hagah. They then promised him that they would do their best to liberate the Toa Mahri from the golden being's thrall. Ultimately, the Golden Being's hold on them was disrupted during its battle with Annona, and the Toa Mahri were freed.

matoro.jpg

matoro

Former Ko-Matoran translator for Turaga Nuju, later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Ice, and destined bearer of the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life.

During his time on Metru Nui, he spent many days and nights in the Archives studying the language and behaviour of Rahi. He later opened a small trading post offering small Rahi to other Matoran for use as pets. Once on Mata Nui, Matoro swiftly built a reputation as an efficient tracker and hunter for Rahi. He gave that up when he was tapped to lead Ko-Koro's Kohlii team. But easily his most important role on the island has been aide to Turaga Nuju. Only Matoro fully understands Nuju's strange language of clicks and whistles. It is his job to translate for the Turaga, even at the councils of the village leaders. This has put him in the uncomfortable position of having knowledge he cannot share with the other Matoran, or having to translate some of Nuju's ruder comments to Turaga and Toa alike.

Matoro was the first to encounter Toa Kopaka after that hero arrived on Mata Nui. Kopaka later saved Matoro from a Nui-Rama attack. Later, Matoro rescued Takua when the chronicler was lost in the snow drifts of Ko-Wahi.

After the Matoran returned to the city of Metru Nui, Matoro was one of five Matoran whom joined Jaller and Toa Takanuva on a mission to find the missing Toa Nuva. Along the way, Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran and return to Metru Nui, and then they eventually encountered Karzahni, whom he stole their original masks and replaced them with others. Matoro also had the bizarre experience of feeling himself holding someone's hand in a dark tunnel, only to find there was no one there. What he did not know was that power of the Kanohi Ignika was reaching out to him from a distance, testing his courage and resolve. They eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika. Striking their transport canisters from lightning before reaching the shores of Voya Nui.

As a Toa Mahri, Matoro went on to battle the Barraki underwater in Mahri Nui for possession of the Mask of Life in order to save the Great Spirit Mata Nui and the Matoran Universe.

Matoro had died saving the dying universe whilst reviving Mata Nui. All the Toa, the seven Turaga, and the Matoran attended in Metru Nui celebrating his life and his heroism in saving Mata Nui. And therefore built a statue of the fallen Toa of Ice in their memorial.

The Kingdom

In this Pocket Dimension, Matoro hesitated too long going after the Kanohi Ignika. The entrance to Karda Nui was closed off, making it impossible to revive the Mata Nui with the mask and so the Great Spirit stayed dead. The only thing Matoro could do with the mask at that point was use it to turn him and the rest of the Toa Mahri back into air breathers and transport them all back to Metru Nui. With only three days left before the universe died, the Toa Mahri moved with the other survivors to the island of Mata Nui. For failing to save the Great Spirit and the universe, Matoro was referred to as the "Disgraced One" and lived the rest of his life in shame, seldom leaving his small hut in what was once Po-Wahi.

10,000 years later, Takanuva came to Matoro's hut to ask for his help in investigating a recent Rahkshi attack, despite protests from Toa Tanma. During their investigation, the three Toa discovered how the Rahkshi bypassed the light barrier by wearing armor of Shadow. After defeating a few invading Rahkshi, the trio discovered the reason for the attacks: Makuta Teridax himself.

In the impending battle, Tanma destroyed the Kraahkan but was killed, and Teridax realized that Takanuva was not from their dimension. Takanuva revealed to Matoro that the Toa of Ice had died in his world while saving Mata Nui and is considered the greatest hero to bear the title of "Toa". This renewed Matoro's will to fight, but then Teridax decided to absorb Matoro into himself, knowing that he was still connected to the Mask of Life and that he had knowledge the Makuta can use. Once absorbed, however, Teridax soon found himself fighting against Matoro in a battle of wills. Stating that Teridax only "survived out of habit", Matoro crushed Teridax's mind with his own and end result killed them both. As Takanuva returned to the surface, he realized that Matoro was only able to fight back from within because Teridax truly had nothing to live for anymore. The Toa of Light then told the Kingdom's ruling council of the incident and later stayed long enough to see a statue erected of Matoro, "the Toa who had been granted that rarest of commodities: a second chance to make things right."

kotu.jpg

kotu

Ga-Matoran who worked as a Rahi handler on the island of Mata Nui. Kotu also served as an adviser to Turaga Nokama.

Nothing is known about Kotu's life in Metru Nui other than that she lived and worked in Ga-Metru. She was eventually placed into a Matoran Sphere, but was later rescued and awakened by the Toa Metru. Kotu was re-awakened on Mata Nui and lived in Ga-Koro. She was a Rahi tender, and one of Turaga Nokama's advisors. Nokama considered sending Kotu with Takua as a member of the Chronicler's Company, but ultimatly decided that she was needed in the village and sent Macku instead. She helped defend Ga-Koro from the Pahrak during the Battle of Ga-Koro. She was rebuilt after the conflict with the Bohrok-Kal. She was expected to be on the Ga-Koro Kolhii team, but Turaga Nokama chose Hahli instead, based on some divination she had done.

She later helped built boats to sail back to Metru Nui, and helped rebuild the city until the Staff of Artakha did the rest. She was also present during the ceremony for Matoro.

Spherus Magna

She later evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna. She migrated with the other Ga-Matoran and the Water Tribe to the Great Sea.

taipu.jpg

taipu

Taipu was a junior Onu-Matoran archivist of no particular renown on Metru Nui. On Mata Nui, he served as a miner in Onu-Koro. He first met Takua while participating in a digging project to construct a tunnel to Le-Wahi. He informed the newcomer about Onu-Matoran mining and what was known about Toa Onua. Later, Taipu was captured by a swarm of Nui-Rama and an infected Toa Lewa. Only Onua's intervention saved him. Taipu would later join with Takua, Kapura, Kopeke, Tamaru, Macku, and Hafu in the Chronicler's Company and defend the Kini-Nui temple site against Rahi attack. He participated in a great battle with various forms of Rahi which ended successfully, thanks to the intervention of the Ta-Koro Guard, the Onu-Koro Ussalry, and the Le-Koro Gukko Bird Force.

During the Bohrok War, when the Gahlok flooded Onu-Koro, Taipu, Onepu, and Nuparu had become trapped in a cave. They then found a Gahlok, but it was deactivated as it was without a Krana. Nuparu thus engineered a mechanical fighting device from the Bohrok pieces, and he named it "Boxor". With it, they broke out of the cavern and saved Onu-Koro.

Taipu was also an Onu-Koro Kolhii player, and lost against Hahli and Macku in one of the matches. His position on the team was goal keeper. He later taught Hahli how to gain better stamina.

He and the other Matoran eventually returned to Metru Nui after the Turaga informed them of their old home. He then began to help rebuild the city before the Staff of Artakha did the rest. He was also present during the ceremony for Matoro.

Spherus Magna

After Teridax's death, he journeyed out of the Matoran Universe to Spherus Magna along with most of the population.

huki.jpg

huki (later renamed as hewkii)

Former Po-Matoran carver and diskmaker, later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri of Stone.

During the time that he lived on Metru Nui, Hewkii was famous throughout the city for the quality of his Kanoka Disks. So excellent was his workmanship that Turaga Dume was forced to make a rule that players from other Metru could not use Po-Metru disks in Akilini tournament play. A Matoran sport on Metru Nui.

On Mata Nui, Hewkii was a Kolhlii champion and a trusted aide to Turaga Onewa. He was one of the only Po-Matoran strong enough to crush rocks with both his feet and his head. Athletic and powerful, he led the Po-Koro team to numerous Kohlii championships and won the Copper Mask of Victory multiple times. Hewkii was credited with inventing the most popular current form of Kohlii when he used his staff to save Macku from a flying rock during the Bohrok invasion. Following the return to Metru Nui, Hewkii was one of six Matoran alongside Takanuva on a mission the find the missing Toa Nuva. Eventually, Takanuva was forced to leave the Matoran and return to Metru Nui, and then the Matoran faced the evil Karzahni later on. They eventually transform into new Toa known as the Toa Inika.

hafu.jpg

hafu

Hafu was probably a Carver on Metru Nui. Later, the Vahki captured him and he was put into a Matoran Sphere and taken away. Hafu was widely considered the best of all the artisans in Po-Koro, as well as a great storyteller. Unfortunately, Hafu had a very high opinion of himself and tended to talk mostly about himself and his achievements. Hafu was part of the Chronicler's Company assembled by Takua to defent the Kini-Nui temple in the Matoran-Rahi war. Hafu's greatest moment occured when he sacrificed some of his most beautiful statues to block the entryway to Po-Koro against the invading Tahnok. Hafu later served on the Po-Koro Kohlii team with Hewkii, narrowly losing to the Ga-Koro team.

Along with the Matoran, Hafu later returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artakha did the rest. Hafu was also in the ceremony held for Matoro at the Coliseum.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later Hafu evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.

nuhrii (later renamed as nuhri)

Ta-Matoran on Metru Nui and Mata Nui; former mask maker in Ta-Metru.

Resentful of Vakama's success, Nuhrii decided to use the Ta-Metru Great Disk to create a mask that would make him famous. Unfortunately, the Dark Hunters also wanted the disk and arranged for Nuhrii to be trapped in a house under attack by the Morbuzakh. Toa Vakama rescued Nuhrii and learned the location of the disk. The Toa and Matoran worked together to retrieve the Great Disk from the fire pits. Later, Nuhrii joined with Ahkmou, Ehrye, Orkahm, Tehutti, and Vhisola to form a Matoran Nui to aid the Toa Metru against the Morbuzakh plant.

Shortly after this, Nuhrii was captured by Vahki and placed into a sphere that rendered him comatose. Evidence was later discovered that Nuhrii may have been destined to become a Toa of Fire. However, this evidence is proved false.

On Mata Nui, Nuhrii served in the Ta-Koro Guard with honour. He guarded the gates of Ta-Koro, wearing a new black powerless Kanohi Kaukau. He was also rebuilt at the Kini-Nui into a stronger form by the Turaga and renamed him as Nuri. He later evacuated Ta-Koro during the Rahkshi attack on the village.

Return to Metru Nui

Nuri later returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artakha was activated. After learning about his past, he decided to change his name back from Nuri to Nuhrii. He was also present during the ceremony for the recently deceased Toa Mahri Matoro.

Spherus Magna

After the Battle of Bara Magna and the death of Makuta Teridax at the hands of Mata Nui, Nuhrii evacuated the heavily damaged Great Spirit Robot along with the other Matoran and migrated to the newly-reformed planet of Spherus Magna.

vhisola.jpg

vhisola

Ga-Matoran on Metru Nui and Mata Nui.

Vhisola was a student of Nokama's on Metru Nui and considered the future Toa Metru of Water to be her best friend. But from the beginning, Vhisola was possessive of Nokama and got angry if she spent time with her other friends. When Nokama became a Toa, Vhisola decided to use her knowledge of a Great Disk's location to make herself more famous than her friend.

But the plan backfired. Vhisola's knowledge attracted the attention of Nidhiki, who pursued her in hopes of getting the disk. Toa Nokama ended up saving the Matoran. Vhisola shared the location of the disk and her theory that the Great Disks could be used to defeat the Morbuzakh. Vhisola joined with Ahkmou, Nuhrii, Tehutti, Ehyre, and Orkham to form themselves into an entity known as Matoran Nui and help in the fight against the Morbuzakh. Shortly after that, she was captured by Vahki and placed in a sphere that rendered her comatose. Evidence was later discovered that Vhisola may have been destined to become a Toa of Water. However, this evidence is proved false.

Vhisola was awakened by the Toa Metru, who became Turaga in the process, on the island of Mata Nui. After that, she lived in Ga-Koro for a thousand years, facing the darkness of Teridax who menaced the island with his infected Rahi. After a thousand years, the Toa Mata arrived and defeated Makuta, the Bohrok invasion, and the Bohrok-Kal strike.

Return to Metru Nui

When Metru Nui was rediscovered, Vhisola and the others constructed boats and returned. She then helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artakha repaired the rest of the island city.

Spherus Magna

She and the other Matoran later evacuated the Matoran Universe and she is now living on Spherus Magna with the other Ga-Matoran and the Water Tribe in the Great Sea.

orkahm.jpg

orkahm (later renamed as orkan)

Le-Matoran on Metru Nui and Mata Nui.

An ussal crab rider in Le-Metru. Orkahm was one of six Matoran to discover the locations of the legendary Great Disks. Orkahm was slow and meticulous and known for having little imagination. His favourite ussal crab was Pewku. He originally intended to find some way to profit from his knowledge of the Le-Metru Great Disk's location, but shortly after finding it, he began being followed by Nidhiki and Krekka. Lured to an out-of-the-way spot, he was trapped in a snare set by Ahkmou. The Toa Metru of Air, Matau, came to his rescue. Orkahm led Matau to the Great Disk, which was stuck inside a force sphere in one of the chutes. Later, Orkahm joined Ahkmou, Vhisola, Nuhrii, and Tehutti into an entity known as Matoran Nui to aid the Toa in their battle against the Morbuzakh.

Shortly afterwards, he was captured by Vahki and put into a sphere. He remained there, comatose, until awakened on Mata Nui by the Toa Metru. Evidence was later discovered that Orkahm may been destined to become a Toa of Air. This evidence later proved to be false. Orkahm later became a Gukko bird rider in Le-Koro.

Return to Metru Nui

He later returned to Metru Nui along with the other Matoran and helped to rebuild the city until the Staff of Artakha did the rest. After hearing the Turaga tell of Metru Nui's history, Orkan chose to return to the old spelling of his name as a way of paying tribute to the past. He was also present during the ceremony held for Matoro.

Spherus Magna

Sometime later he evacuated the Matoran Universe and is currently living on Spherus Magna.

ehrye.jpg

ehrye

Ko-Matoran on Metru Nui and Mata Nui.

Ehrye worked as a messenger in Ko-Metru but dreamed of obtaining employment in a Knowledge Tower. He blamed Nuju for preventing him from getting a better job and resolved to use his knowledge of the location of the Ko-Metru Great Disk to get what he wanted. Nidhiki and Krekka trapped Ehrye on a rooftop in their efforts to get the Great Disks, and he had to be saved by Toa Nuju. Later, Ehrye merged with Vhisola, Orkahm, Nuhrii, Tehutti, and Ahkmou to form the Matoran Nui and help the Toa Metru defeat the Morbuzakh. Shortly after that, Ehrye was captured by the Vahki and put into a sphere that rendered him comatose. Evidence was later discovered that Ehrye may have been destined to become a Toa of Ice. However, this evidence was later proven to be false. Ehrye was eventually rescued by the Toa Metru and brought to Mata Nui.

On Mata Nui, he lived in Ko-Koro amongst other Ko-Matoran. However, what job Ehrye did on Mata Nui was unknown.

Return to Metru Nui

Along with the other Matoran, Ehrye returned to Metru Nui. He was part of the reconstruction effort until the Staff of Artakha was found. He was also present during the ceremony for Matoro .

Spherus Magna

Sometime later Ehrye evacuated the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna.

tehutti.jpg

tehutti (later renamed as tehuti)

Onu-Matoran on Metru Nui and Mata Nui.

Onu-Matoran Archivist who discovered the location of the Onu-Metru Great Disk. Initially, Tehutti planned to give the disk as a gift to the Archives, thus securing his reputation as a master archivist. But when Nidhiki threatened him, the Matoran thought better of his plan. Rescued from a wild Rahkshi by Toa Whenua, Tehutti led him and Toa Nuju to the proper section of the Archives where the disk could be found.

Later, Tehutti joined with Ahkmou, Nuhrii, Vhisola, Orkahm, and Ehrye to form the Matoran Nui and assist the Toa Metru against the Morbuzakh. After they had split back into their separate forms, Tehutti departed for Onu-Metru. He was captured on the way by Vahki and placed in a Matoran Sphere. Evidence was later discovered that Tehutti may have been destined to become a Toa of Earth. This evidence later proved to be false. He would later be rescued by the Toa Metru and transported to Mata Nui, where he worked as a miner.

At some point his Huna was replaced with a Kakama for unknown reasons. Along with the rest of Onu-Koro's population, Tehutti was forced to evacuate the city during the Bohrok War when a swarm of Gahlok attacked and flooded the entire region. After these events and the subsequent Bohrok-Kal crisis, Tehutti was re-named Tehuti on Naming Day and rebuilt into a stronger form.

Return to Metru Nui

Along with all the other Matoran, Tehutti returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artakha was activated. After hearing the Turaga's tales of Metru Nui, Tehuti changed his name back out of respect for the past. The archivist later took part in the ceremony held for Matoro.

Spherus Magna

After Makuta was defeated for the final time in the Battle of Bara Magna, Tehutti migrated from the dying Matoran Universe to the newly-reformed Spherus Magna.

History of the Matoran on Mata Nui

the matoran-rahi war

the matoran / rahi war

The Matoran-Rahi War, also known as the Great War, was a conflict between the Matoran of Mata Nui and the local Rahi who were, at the time, enslaved by Makuta Teridax to do his will. It took place prior to and during the Quest for the Masks, making it much more difficult for the Toa to complete the quest. Teridax was attempting to exert his control over the Matoran, and thus turned the island's Rahi against the villagers. However, guided by the wisdom and courage of the Turaga, the Matoran refused to cower to the threat. Defence forces sprung up in Ta-Koro, Le-Koro, Onu-Koro, Ko-Koro, and Ga-Koro in the forms of the Ta-Koro Guard, Gukko Force, Ussalry, Sanctum Guard, and Ga-Koro Defence Force respectively. The war lasted nearly a thousand years, throughout the Dark Time. It is unknown what name of the Po-Koro Defence, but it is known that they had one.

It ended when the Toa Mata defeated Teridax and ended the Rahi threat.

Conflicts

As the threat of Rahi increased, several of the bravest Matoran organised resistance. Jaller organised the Guard, Kongu created the Gukko Force, and Onepu formed the Ussalry.

  • In Le-Koro, Nui-Rama battled the Le-Matoran, carrying away villagers and taking them to their nests, where they were put to work. The Force fought back, shooting the Rahi out of the sky with Gukko Birds manned by two Matoran. Turaga Matau and many of the Matoran from the village were captured during the fighting. They remained until Toa Lewa rescued them, with help from Toa Onua.

  • In Onu-Koro, the Matoran encountered tunnelling Rahi who threatened the Matorans' mining work. Onepu's Ussalry rode Ussal Crabs into battle to combat the forces of Teridax. Although the city itself was at ease, the tunnels and mines were filled with danger. The Ussalry fought valiantly against the threat, but were outnumbered greatly. At the climax of the war Onepu was unable to send even a single regiment to help Ta-Koro.

  • Jaller faced massive opposition from all kinds of Rahi in Ta-Koro. Teridax poured more Rahi into Ta-Koro than any other place on Mata Nui. The Ta-Koro Guard maintained outposts all over the city and battled the Rahi everywhere they appeared. Fighting was fiercest here, with massive battles staged between the Matoran and Teridax's minions. The Charred Forest, once a peaceful jungle, was reduced to its present state due to the fighting. As Teridax infected more Rahi than ever before to attack the Matoran, Jaller saw that the Matoran could not win the war by force alone. He, along with Turaga Vakama, feared that the Rahi would overwhelm the cities soon; the Matoran could not hold much longer. The Toa Mata decided to journey to Teridax's lair to defeat the Master of Shadows and end the war, while the Chronicler's Company volunteered to make sure that Rahi did not take the Kini-Nui. Eventually, Jaller was forced to abandon most of the outer defences and fall back behind the city. Teridax ordered his Rahi to pull back from the rest of Mata Nui to destroy Takua and his friends. Jaller, Kongu, and Onepu quickly organised their forces and counterattacked the Rahi at the Battle of Kini-Nui. The Matoran forces were victorious, and the Toa Mata banished Teridax temporarily, ending the war.

battle of kini nui

Battle of Kini Nui

Battle of Kini-Nui was fought between Matoran and Rahi at the Kini-Nui temple. The Toa Mata were ready to decend to Mangaia to fight Makuta Teridax and needed someone to guard Kini-Nui, because the Rahi would try to destroy it. If the Kini-Nui would be destroyed, they wouldn't be able to come back. Luckily the Chronicler's Company was there to help the Toa Mata. After the Toa Mata left, the Rahi started coming in groups and Takua, Macku, Kapura, Taipu, Hafu, Kopeke and Tamaru defeated them with disks. After they defeated some groups, whole hordes of Rahi appeared. A Nui-Rama attacked them but was hit by Kongu leading the Le-Koro Gukko Force. Then the Onu-Koro Ussalry dug through the ground to the surface and started to fight. Next they heard Jaller's horn and the Ta-Koro Guard appeared. Takua was knocked out by a wounded Nui-Rama, but the Matoran managed to defeat the Rahi. After the battle, Takua regained consciousness and was informed by Onepu that something strange is going on in Onu-Koro. The Chronicler set off for Onu-Koro with Pewku.

The Battle of Kini-Nui was the largest conflict involving the Matoran of Mata Nui. Three of its participants (Jaller, Kongu, and Takua) would eventually become Toa.

MAVRAH

An Onu-Matoran archivist on Metru Nui. Along with Whenua, Mavrah was part of a secret project to study ancient aquatic Rahi who had appeared in the ocean around the city. When it became obvious that keeping the beasts confined was a threat to the Archives and the rest of Metru Nui, Turaga Dume ordered that the project be shut down and the Rahi driven back out to sea by the Vahki. Unwilling to give up his work, Mavrah led the creatures out of the Archives himself and through a tunnel in the Great Barrier. There he took up residence in a cavern while his Rahi lived in an underground river. He also allied with a small number of Kralhi, mechanical order enforcers who had been driven from the city long ago.

Many years later, the Toa Metru travelled that same river as they attempted to find a new land in which the Matoran could live. Believing them to be agents of Dume sent to take him back, Mavrah unleashed his Rahi on them and attempted to kill the Toa. In the middle of a three-way battle between Toa, Rahi, and Vahki, Toa Onewa forced Mavrah to see the destruction his methods were causing. Guilt-ridden and dismayed, Mavrah rushed to the water's edge, calling for the fighting to cease. But the battle had turned the river waters violent, and Mavrah was washed away by a sudden wave. After his death, Mavrah was teleported to the Red Star. Much later, Toa Pohatu and Kopaka met him on the Red Star. He saved them from vicious creatures inhabiting the star by dragging them into another room, and introduced himself.

the rebuilding

The Rebuilding was an event that took place after the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal. During this event Matoran rebuilt themselves into larger, more agile forms. The first two Matoran to be rebuilt were Takua and Jaller. The Rebuilding was later followed by a Naming Day.

Naming Day is one of the few known Matoran holidays. As the chief aspect of the celebration, specifically honoured Matoran were recognised with a grant of a change in form to their names. The only known naming day was after the Bohrok crisis as a reward for the Matoran who did much during the crisis.

The Matoran of Light, or Av-Matoran, have a long and rich history. They were the first tribe created by the Great Beings, and as such, they were larger, stronger and more powerful than standard Matoran. Of all villagers, only Av-Matoran are able to harness and use their elemental power in combat.

Shortly after their creation, the Great Beings used the remains of the process to create the first Krana Mask. An unintended side effect was the creation of the Zyglak, a race who later proved to be a dangerous menace. Av-Matoran were designed by the Great Beings so that at a certain stage, many of them would go dormant and evolve into the mechanical Bohrok.

However, the Bohrok species are opposite of Toa. As well as the Matoran and Turaga as a three-way path of their evolution. While the Toa side of the species were tasked to protect, the Bohrok are slightly the opposite. Their task consists of cleaning the camouflage island (island of Mata Nui) that covers over the entire body of the Great Spirit Robot. Returning it into its original state.

The Av-Matoran briefly lived in Karda Nui, prior to the coming of Mata Nui. That was where they first encountered the Toa Mata, who were there to battle a plague of intelligent lightning bolts called Avohkah. The Av-Matoran left Karda Nui before the energy storm hit the first time, moving into caverns in the roof above "the core".

Some time later, a number of Av-Matoran disappeared. The tribe would never know that they had been taken by the Order of Mata Nui, temporarily brainwashed into forgetting they were Av-Matoran and then placed in different geographic areas. This was meant to insure that Av-Matoran would survive if ever a threat to the main tribe should occur.

When the Great Cataclysm struck, portions of the roof broke off, carrying many Av-Matoran down with them. Massive stalactites impaled onto the floor of the core, and flood waters from Aqua Magna began to spill in, turning the lower level into a swamp. The Av-Matoran created villages on the upturned bases of the stalactites and lived in harmony and peace for more than 1000 years.

A short time ago, their world was invaded by the Brotherhood of Makuta, who began transforming the Matoran of Karda Nui into evil shadow Matoran. However, one village held out, eventually receiving aid from the Toa Nuva. The surviving Av-Matoran teamed with the Toa to do battle with the Makuta and the shadow Matoran.

Knowing the energy storm would strike again as soon as Mata Nui was awakened, Takanuva gathered the Matoran of Light together and saw to it that they were evacuated out of Karda Nui. They made their way to Metru Nui, where they still reside.

Av-Matoran are capable of hurling light bursts from their hands and of changing how the eye perceives light, so that can appear to be other colours beside their native white and gold.

Tanma, and all the surviving Av-Matoran, evacuated to the newly-reformed planet of Spherus Magna.

tanma.jpg

tanma

Tanma was the leader of the Av-Matoran survivors following the capture of Kirop by the Makuta. He organised the defence of the village during the period before the Toa Nuva's arrival in Karda Nui. Although he did not recognise the Toa, he did immediately act to save Toa Lewa from a shadow leech. When he accidentally landed on Lewa, they discovered that the physical contact made it possible for Lewa to access Tanma's memories. Tanma, in turn, was able to act as a living energy source for Lewa's skyblaster. Tanma carried two power swords and wore a rocket booster on his back, which allowed him to fly. He currently lives on Metru Nui.

Tanma, Toa of Light

In the alternate universe discovered by Takanuva in The Kingdom, Tanma became a Toa of Light after his universe's Takanuva divided his power among a new generation of Toa. He joined Toa Takanuva to investigate the cause of Rahkshi penetrating the barriers of light around the Kingdom, despite objecting to Takanuva's insistence that the disgraced Matoro come along as well. He eventually joined the other Toa in fighting a group of shadow-armoured Rahkshi, followed by a mutated and empowered Teridax. Although Tanma managed to destroy Teridax's Krahkaan mask, he was subsequently killed by the Makuta's Rahkshi Power of Shattering.

solek.jpg

solek

Solek is an expert on the ancient legends of the Toa Mata and particularly of those on Kopaka. He was overjoyed to see the Nuva arrive and was bursting with questions for them. Unfortunately, the answers had to wait as there were battles to be won against the Makuta. He teamed with Kopaka Nuva to battle Mutran and later saved a handful of other Av-Matoran. He also participated in the battles against the Makuta in the swamp and aided Takanuva in his round-up of the shadow Matoran. When in physical contact, Kopaka could share Solek's memories. Solek gained the power to create objects out of solid light. Solek carried two power swords and wore a rocket booster on his back, which allowed him to fly. He now lives on Metru Nui.

photok.jpg

photok

A daring, risk-taking Av-Matoran, Photok teamed with Pohatu Nuva in battle with the Makuta. They shared a number of dangerous situations, from being plummeted toward the swamp by Icarax's gravity power to being trapped inside a giant rock by Gorast. But each time they survived, thanks to power and sharp wits. When in physical contact, Pohatu could share Photok's memories, something that saved them when they were battling Icarax. (Photok knew the location of a fallen stalactite through which the two would smash to try and slow their fall.) Photok gained the power of light speed, so he could add to Pohatu's velocity.

radiak (shadow matoran form)

Radiak was a warrior and a famous hero among the Av-Matoran. Turned into a shadow Matoran by Vamprah, he proved to be just as fierce a fighter for evil as he had been for good. When Antroz and Radiak were physically linked, both gained new abilities. Antroz was able to see through Radiak's eyes via a mental link. Radiak was able to slow opponents, making them feel too lazy to act. Radiak was turned back into a Matoran of Light thanks to the efforts of Takanuva, and now lives on Metru Nui.

gavla.jpg

gavla (shadow matoran form)

The first Karda Nui Matoran to be transformed into a shadow Matoran and later leader of that group, Gavla had never liked her fellow villagers and so fell easily into the role of opposing them. When physically linked with Vamprah, she gained the ability to disrupt an opponent's balance. Vamprah was able to see through her eyes when in physical contact with her. Gavla was transformed back to a Matoran of Light against her will and agreed to travel to Metru Nui only because she saw no other option left to her.

kirop.jpg

kirop (shadow matoran form)

Former leader of the Matoran of Light in Karda Nui, he was transformed into a shadow Matoran by Chirox. The Toa Nuva captured him and then purposely let him go so he would lead them to the hive where the shadow leeches were created. When linked to Chirox, Kirop had the power to temporarily blind an opponent. Chirox gained the ability to see through Kirop's eyes as long as they were in contact. Thanks to Takanuva, Kirop was transformed back into a Matoran of Light. He now resides on Metru Nui.

Vican.jpg

vican (shadow matoran form)

Vican was a Le-Matoran who was transformed into a Shadow Matoran.

History

Vican resided on the Southern Continent, in a village on an island in the centre of a lake somewhere near Voya Nui.

He was paired up with Mutran after Mutran had tested his Shadow Leeches on Vican. He was intended to be a lab assistant to Mutran, and Mutran eventually took him to Karda Nui with him where he continued his work in the Shadow Leech Hives, until Toa Ignika destroyed the sentient stone cord holding up the structure, sending it hurtling into the Swamp of Secrets.

Vican was later attacked and cured by a Klakk and became the first Matoran to be affected by the Shadow Leeches and the first to be cured. A Le-Matoran again, Vican encountered Takanuva and attempted to convince him he had found a cure for the Shadow Matoran. After this was proven true, and all Shadow Matoran were cured, Vican left with the Av-Matoran to Metru Nui where the Toa would meet them after the completion of their mission in the core. Sometime later he evacuated Metru Nui along with the other Matoran onto Spherus Magna.

Av-Matoran Evolution

While Matoran can transform into Toa and then later Turaga, the Av-Matoran can choose their path of evolution into becoming Toa, with their native element species as Toa of Light. Or therefore remain Av-Matoran instead of turning into mechanical Bohrok as their destiny. Takua, an Av-Matoran, in his unusual disguise as a regular Matoran on both Metru Nui and Mata Nui, can too become a Toa of Light instead of turning into a Bohrok.

voya nui matoran

The Matoran residents of Voya Nui originally came from other lands. When their Turaga felt they were not working hard enough (in example, being injured or having such bad behaviour), they were shipped to the realm of Karzahni, where they would be "repaired". Unfortunately, Karzahni did a poor job, resulting in the Matoran being smaller and weaker than normal ones. Angry over his failure, Karzahni gave the Matoran weapons and shipped them to the southern continent. They eventually settled in Voya Nui.

When Voya Nui was ripped from its continent and ended up in the outer ocean of Aqua Magna, the Matoran found they had to struggle to survive in a hostile climate and with limited resources. But survive they did, constructing new villages, setting up their own government, and working together. (At the time, none of them realised the true significance of Voya Nui - that it was the hiding place of the Mask of Life - or that Axonn and Brutaka shared the island with them.)

None of the Voya Nui Matoran had ever seen a Toa face to face. So when the evil Piraka came to the island claiming to be Toa, most Matoran believed that was what they were. However, only a handful questioned why "Toa" would be so nasty, destructive and brutal.

When the Piraka enslaved the Matoran population with zamor spheres, only six escaped: Garan, Balta, Dalu, Piruk, Velika, and Kazi.

They formed the Matoran Resistance, hiding in the mountains and harassing the Piraka. Although far weaker than their enemies, they did have some successes. These included the theft of a zamor sphere launcher from Avak and that Piraka's subsequent defeat by Dalu.

Easily their most important moment came during a major battle the Toa Inika and the Piraka. The Matoran slipped away from the fight and found where the Toa Nuva were being kept prisoner. They succeeded in freeing the heroes. Later, Velika would make a new katana sword for Lewa, to replace the one the Piraka had broken.

With their fellow Matoran freed from the Piraka's domination, the Matoran Resistance remained on Voya Nui when the Toa Inika left to pursue the Mask of Life. They were eventually reunited with the Mahri Matoran whom thought they were dead during the Great Cataclysm. While the island itself rejoined with its original continent, thereafter.

garan

Onu-Matoran leader of the Resistance on Voya Nui. Garan was a strategic thinker, who was convinced the Resistance could win as long as they worked together. He carried twin pulse bolt generators that fired a ball of energy which grew more powerful the further it travelled. Garan led the mission to invade the Piraka stronghold and rescue the imprisoned Toa Nuva.

PIRUK

The Le-Matoran member of the Resistance, Piruk was known for his stealth. Not terribly brave, he was still extremely loyal to his friends and a very skilled spy. He carried two shredder claws which could rip through solid metal. Piruk learned much of the Piraka's plans by sneaking into the Piraka stronghold and eavesdropping on Zaktan.

balta

Ta-Matoran member of the Resistance, Balta was the weapons maker for the team and one of the most daring of the group. He stole a zamor sphere launcher from Avak, enabling Velika to copy the design, and also lead the rescue party for Garan when he was a prisoner of the Piraka. Balta carried twin repeller tools which could block an enemy and strike back with equal force.

dalu

Ga-Matoran warrior of the Resistance, Dalu was the best fighter on the team. Her most important moment during the battle against the Piraka was her single-handed defeat of Avak. Her twin chargers allowed her to temporarily increase one attribute of a target (strength, speed, hearing, etc.)

kazi

Ko-Matoran member of the Resistance, Kazi was cool, quiet, and secretive. He was the first Voya Nui Matoran to meet Axonn and the only one who had an idea that there might be more to Voya Nui than anyone knew. He carried twin echo forks which, when slammed together, produced a devastating sound wave.

velika

"Eccentric" Po-Matoran Resistance member, Velika was known for his habit of always speaking in riddles and metaphors. A skilled engineer, he created the zamor sphere launchers carried by the Toa Inika as well as the energised protodermis-filled zamor spheres they used. Velika also carried twin power carvers. However, Velika was not a Matoran. He was a Great Being in disguise. Building his evil schemes as well as a vicarious lust to dominate the planet of Spherus Magna. He was one of the Great Beings on Spherus Magna whom deviously betrayed his fellow, soft-minded creators. During his time as a Matoran, he concluded that the destruction of the planet was due to poor leadership made by the Great Beings, as well as believing that they should rule the planet with an iron fist.

He eventually decided to seize control of Spherus Magna for himself, whilst developing a master plan that involved killing inhabitants of the Matoran Universe. Whom would possibly react outside of their A.I. parameters, therefore objecting his rule. After the reformation of Spherus Magna, Velika defeated a Toa of Air named Lesovikk and stole his Air Sword, with which he killed Karzahni at Iron Canyon and extracted Tren Krom from his prison before murdering him in Bota Magna (the newly re-melded jungle region). Velika killed them both in gruesome ways to inspire fear among the population, which he planned to use to ensure his acceptance as a ruler.

Due to his alliance with Kabrua, Velika knew about the Vorox on Bota Magna. Planning to use them as shock troops Velika gave them sophisticated force blasters and a device capable of blocking a Toa's Elemental Powers.

He is also responsible for the Matoran, Toa, and all species of the Matoran Universe. To evolve them from being a living species of mindless workers, to sapient creatures with an over-sophisticated work culture of their intelligence.

Before Mata Nui's launch, he announced himself to be going into exile in order to remove any suspicion before transferring his consciousness into a Po-Matoran's body. In order to observe Mata Nui and the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe while disguised as an imposter Matoran calling himself "Velika".

However, the mind of the real Velika was placed into stasis in the original body of the Great Being.

Alternate Universes

alternate universes

Velika, Toa of Stone

Long before the formation of The Kingdom led by former Toa of Light and Turaga, Takanuva; Velika was not a Great Being in his disguise. Instead, Velika and the Matoran Universe Species were created and thereafter turned sapient by the Great Beings; as an overtly strange and innocent choice, as well as charging them their role in operating the Matoran Universe. They innocently believed that having Sapient Matoran and other species alike would therefore benefit Mata Nui's existence, as well as giving them a sophisticated work culture of their own in the due process.

At that time, however, the evil Great Being instead took the body of an unknown Metru Matoran as his disguise as well as an attempt to rule Spherus Magna. While Velika, however, was brought into being with a consciousness of his own.

When Toa Matoro failed to save the life of Mata Nui, and therefore evacuated to the island of Mata Nui, Toa Takanuva sacrificed the last of his Toa Power and made Velika, Balta, Kapura, Dalu, Tanma, and Defilak into a new generation of Toa.

mahri nui matoran

Population of Matoran on Voya Nui whom lived in a coastal city before the events of the Great Cataclysm as well as Mata Nui's subsequent crash to Aqua Magna. As the region broke off of Voya Nui, it disappeared beneath the waves and landed on top of a fortress built by the green Barraki named Ehlek. Crushing it, and also disrupted the Fields of Air. Resulting in the release of air bubbles. The surviving Matoran of Mahri Nui were able to use that to sustain their own lives as well as resist the mutagenic properties of the seawater.

In the years that followed, the Matoran surrounded their homes and buildings with large air bubbles, domesticated Hydruka creatures to harvest air, and their best to survive. Their memories of Voya Nui were fragmentary at best and they did not realise there was another civilisation above them.

They were also unaware that their city was resting in the centre of the outer regions of the pit. Mahri Nui was also menaced by sea predators that served the Barraki. When the Mask of Life floated down to Mahri Nui, the Matoran found themselves in the center of a war between the Barraki and the Toa Mahri. The Matoran allied themselves with the Toa, despite knowing that if the Toa succeeded in their mission, Mahri Nui and all who lived on it would be destroyed.

The Matoran defended Mahri Nui by using launchers that fired Solid Air Bubbles. Known residents of Mahri Nui include Defilak, Dekar, Kyrehx, Sarda, Idris, and Gar.

dekar

Po-Matoran resident of Mahri Nui. An aquahunter, Dekar was the second Matoran to come into possession of the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. As a result of his touching the mask, he was "cursed" in such a way that he could not cause a fatal injury to anything he fought. Convinced the mask was evil, he attempted to destroy it, but it was stolen from him by the Barraki before he could do so. Later, the power of the mask transformed him into Hydraxon, "erasing" his memories of his previous life in the process.

Defilak.jpg

defilak

Le-Matoran leader of the Matoran Council on Mahri Nui. Defilak led an expedition into the pit and was among those captured by Pridak. He later escaped and helped defend his city against a massive venom eel and the armies led by the Barraki. It was he whom gave the Toa Inika their new name, TOA MAHRI, in honour of their service to Mahri Nui.

kyrehx

Ga-Matoran inhabitant of Mahri Nui. Kyrehx was the first Matoran there to come into contact with Mask of Life. As a result of her interaction with the Mask of Life, she found that plant life spontaneously grew anywhere she went and reacted violently to being uprooted. These experiences stopped when she passed the mask on to Dekar.

Sarda.jpg

sarda

Ta-Matoran resident of Mahri Nui who accompanied Defilak on his exploratory mission into the pit. Captured by Pridak, Sarda was believed to have been killed by Takea sharks. In fact, he was rescued by Lesovikk, Toa of Air, and participated in the battle against Karzahni.

On his home island, Sarda at some point befriended a member of the first Toa team defending that island, Lesovikk. Later, his Turaga went mad and sent him, Lesovikk's other friend Idris, and the entire population of the island, to Karzahni, much to Lesovikk's dismay.

Karzahni rebuilt Sarda into a worse form but presumably gave him weapons. He was then transported to the Southern Continent, into the village of Mahri Nui, which broke off along with the village of Voya Nui during the Great Cataclysm. He and the other Matoran there lived for a while on the newly-formed Voya Nui, but eventually Mahri Nui broke off and sunk beneath the sea.

Changed again by the mutagen in the Pit, the Mahri Nui Matoran survived by disturbing the airweed in the Fields of Air and creating a bubble of air around the city.

Idris.jpg

idris

Idris was a Ga-Matoran who volunteered to helm Defilak's Submarine and was subsequently captured by Pridak.  On her home island, Idris at some point befriended a member of the first Toa team defending that island, Lesovikk. Later, her Turaga went mad and sent her, Lesovikk's other friend Sarda, and the entire population of the island to Karzahni, much to Lesovikk's dismay.

Karzahni rebuilt Idris into a worse form but gave her weapons. She was then sent to the Southern Continent, into the village of Mahri Nui, which broke off along with the village of Voya Nui during the Great Cataclysm. She and the other Matoran there lived for a while on the newly-formed Voya Nui, but eventually Mahri Nui broke off and sunk beneath the sea.

Changed again by the mutagen in the Pit, the Mahri Nui Matoran survived by disturbing the airweed in the Fields of Air and creating a bubble of air around the city.

gar

Onu-Matoran resident of Mahri Nui and Defilak's best friend. Gar lived in peace until he was sent to Karzahni to be repaired. He was then sent to the Southern Continent after Karzahni failed. Later, he was on the chunk of land that would be called Voya Nui during the Great Cataclysm. He lived there for a while until the village built on the beach sank. This location was then named Mahri Nui.

He volunteered to helm Defilak's Submarine, but was captured by Pridak along with the rest of the crew. After Pridak left with Defilak, Gar offered to sacrifice himself to allow Idris to get to Mahri Nui and warn the Matoran there, even though he barely knew her. This was not needed, as both got to the airweed fields, which were occupied by Carapar's Keras army. The recently escaped Defilak rescued both and helped the two return to the safety of Mahri Nui.

Before destroying The Cord, the Toa Mahri led Gar and the other Mahri Nui Matoran to Voya Nui. Axonn took them to the Nui Caves to survive the descent. For a while he lived on the Southern Continent before evacuating the Matoran Universe and taking up residence on Spherus Magna.

matoran types

matoran types

In the BIONICLE Universe, one of fifteen elemental powers can innately reside within a Matoran depending on their type. A Matoran cannot use these abilities right away but if they ever transform into a Toa, these powers will become fully unlocked for them to use. For Matoran gender, it is seen as more psychological than physical. Which means that Matoran of a certain element can only be exclusively male or female. The only exception to this rule, however, are the Av-Matoran you can be either male or female. However, there are many more types of Matoran that could be seen as somewhat rare in comparison.

Ta-Matoran

Matoran of Fire. Unlike other Matoran types, Ta-Matoran have a high tolerance to heat and their armour colours usually consist of red, orange, yellow, or black. All Ta-Matoran are male.

Ga-Matoran

Ga-Matoran are the Matoran of Water and can hold their breathe better than other classes of Matoran. They're also known to be exceptional swimmers and their armour colours reside many different shades of blue. The population of Ga-Matoran are entirely female.

Le-Matoran

The Matoran of Air otherwise known as Le-Matoran have great agility and speed while up high in the sky but feel awkward on solid ground. They typically are known to have shades of green as their armour colours and all Le-Matoran are male.

Ko-Matoran

The Matoran of Ice known as the Ko-Matoran. Unlike other types they have a higher tolerance to the cold, allowing them to better survive in freezing snowy environment. Their armour colours are white, grey, sand blue, silver, light blue, and black. All Ko-Matoran are male.

Po-Matoran

The Matoran of Stone otherwise known as the Po-Matoran. The Po-Matoran are physically stronger than other types of Matoran. They are all male and their armour colours include brown, tan, orange, yellow, and black.

Onu-Matoran

The Onu-Matoran are the Matoran of Earth and are one of the male Matoran types. They have limited Night Vision abilities to help them see in dark underground caves as well as enhance strength. Their armour colours include black, dark grey, purple, tan, and orange.

Ba-Matoran

Ba-Matoran otherwise known as the Matoran villagers of Gravity. These Matoran had small amounts of Elemental Gravity Energy in them. It is known that at least some of them lived on the Southern Continent. Ba-Matoran often wore purple and black armour and Kanohi. Their trait is that they had a resistance to Gravitational pressure. The Ba-Matoran are all male species.

Vo-Matoran

The Vo-Matoran villagers. Otherwise known as the Matoran of Lightning. Although not familiar in places such as Metru Nui, Mata Nui, Voya Nui, or Mahri Nui, Vo-Matoran were known to settle around areas with an abundance of power. Their elemental trait was that they had electrical resistance. Vo-Matoran were mainly blue and white in colour and were all female.

Fe-Matoran

Matoran villagers with innate Iron powers, which gave them great endurance. Some Fe-Matoran lived on the island of Stelt. The only known named Fe-Matoran was Zaria, who was transformed into a Toa of Iron. Fe-Matoran wore gunmetal grey (dark silver grey colour) and burnt orange armour and are all male.

The Fe-Matoran, otherwise nicknamed as "the Nynrah Ghosts" were crafters from the island of Nynrah.

Little is known about them, except that they modified the armour of the Makuta species when the Makuta evolved. They also created the Nynrah Ghostblasters, hence the name.

Other devices they made were the Exo-ToaZamor Launchers, and Fohrok. However, they secretly sabotaged the Fohrok, and upon learning of this, the Brotherhood of Makuta hired multiple Dark Hunters to execute the Matoran responsible. Eventually, only two Nynrah Ghosts were left. One of them became a Dark Hunter named Phantom while the other left to Stelt as a rogue Ghost. He modified Vultraz's Skyfighter and, due to his slow response to Mazeka, has a crushed mask.

At some point, they took the Matoran Gaardus and transformed him into a creature meant to defend Nynrah. He later killed Nynrah Ghost exiles.

De-Matoran

Matoran villagers with innate Sonics powers. They possessed a very minuscule amount of Elemental Sonics energy, to the extent that they have more acute sense of hearing than any other type of Matoran, being able to hear sounds miles away. As a result, they trained themselves to make as few sounds as possible and generally did not welcome Toa, as Toa often bring conflict and battle, which caused excessive noise. De-Matoran often wore grey and black Kanohi and armour and had yellow eyes.

All De-Matoran are male.

Fa-Matoran

Fa-Matoran. Otherwise known as the Matoran villagers of Magnetism. No Fa-Matoran have appeared in the BIONICLE storyline yet. It is not known where Fa-Matoran live but a trait that they all shared was that they had a better sense of direction, a reference to the fact that compasses work using magnetism. Their  amour colours were gunmetal / dark silver grey and black and are all male.

Su-Matoran

Matoran tied to the element of Plasma. No Su-Matoran have appeared in the BIONICLE storyline yet, but logic dictates that since there are Toa of Plasma, there must be Matoran as well. Although not familiar in places such as Metru Nui, Mata Nui, Voya Nui, or Mahri Nui, the Su-Matoran's traits were that they were resistant to heat and sunlight. They also lived in areas with a hot climate. The Su-Matoran main armour colours were orange and white. The Su-Matoran are also another type of the male species.

Bo-Matoran

The Bo-Matoran are the Matoran villagers of the Green. Giving them a unique understanding of plain attributes such as poison. Due to their element, they prefer to live in forests and jungles and are known to have blue and green armour. The Ba-Matoran types are all male.

Shadow Matoran

Unlike other Matoran, Shadow Matoran can't exist naturally. Meaning they can only come about when the light has been drained from any other type of Matoran. This transformation provides them with limited shadow elemental abilities such as launching bolts of shadow energy. Since Shadow Matoran can be formed from any other Matoran either be male or female.

turaga

Leaders of the Matoran and protectors of legends of the Toa. Turaga come into being when Toa have fulfilled their destiny and have chosen to sacrifice their Toa power for the greater good. That act leads to the transformation of Toa to Turaga. The city of METRU NUI was led by Turaga Dume, a benevolent leader who was captured and impersonates by the Makuta Teridax for many months. He remains somewhere in the city, comatose inside a silver sphere. The six TOA METRU fulfilled their destiny by saving the Matoran from the Makuta and sacrificed their power to awaken those same Matoran from their comas. In that instant, they transformed into Turaga Matau, Turaga Nokama, Turaga Nuju, Turaga Onewa, Turaga Vakama, and Turaga Whenua. In these forms, they oversaw the construction of six villages of Mata Nui and helped to defend the Matoran from the attacks of Rahi.

When Tahu and his team of Toa arrived on the island, the Turaga chose to tell them only part of the truth about the past. It was not until the defeat of Teridax and rediscovery of Metru Nui that the Turaga shared with Tahu and the others the fact that they had once been Toa and that the Matoran had once lived on Metru Nui. Once a Toa becomes a Turaga, he loses the ability ever to wield Toa power or use Great Masks of Power again. Turaga are able to master Noble Masks of Power and have limited elemental abilities.

Physically, they are slightly stronger than Matoran but nowhere near as powerful as Toa. Although generally wise and able leaders, Turaga have shown themselves capable of resentment, deception, and lack of trust. How much recent revelations about their past will damage the relationship between the Turaga and the Toa Nuva remains to be seen.

turaga of mata nui

Former heroes of Metru Nui (the TOA METRU) whom brought thousands of sleeping Matoran to the island of Mata Nui. And then reawakening the Matoran, transforming the Toa into Turaga in the process. As Turaga, they supervise the construction of six villages on Mata Nui.

The Turaga also created a circular sandpit to tell stories such as the legend of Mata Nui. They have told this to the Matoran so that they would understand the threat of the Makuta without knowing their true history and origins in Metru Nui. Which they had forgotten due to exposure in the Matoran Spheres (the Matoran's sleeping pods).

After many years of their secret past, as well as the rediscovery of their original land, the Turaga eventually shared their past lives as the former Toa.

Turaga Vakama.jpg

turaga vakama

In the absence of Toa, Vakama used his diminished elemental powers to aid in the defense of his village and agreed to the formation of the Ta-Koro Guard. He also chose Jaller as his right hand Matoran and Kapura as his left. Vakama banished Takua from Ta-Koro due to his lack of a work ethic. Not long before the arrival of the Toa Mata, Vakama was captured by Fire Mahi. He also lost his Firestaff, which ended up in the tunnels of Onu-Wahi. Shortly after he and his tool were recovered by Takua, who later summoned the Toa Mata to Mata Nui by placing the six Toa Stones.

Vakama lived in Po-Koro after the destruction of Ta-Koro. And later in Metru Nui, he and his fellow Turaga assist in the management and rebuilding of that city.

Turaga Nokama.jpg

turaga nokama

Nokama spent the next one thousand years using her weakened elemental powers to help the Ga-Matoran defend their village, Ga-Koro, from Rahi. Her right hand Matoran was Macku, while her left hand was Kotu. She went to the Kini-Nui to see Takua summon the Toa Mata. Nokama would witness the coming of the new Toa, and was the one who would appoint Takua as Chronicler while he was on his journeys around the island.

Nokama returned to Metru Nui with the other Turaga, the Toa Nuva, and the Matoran. After discovering that the life of Mata Nui, and thus the entire universe was in danger, she broke ranks with the other Turaga and informed Jaller of the situation. This prompted him to gather a team of villagers and a Toa of Light and go in search of the missing Toa Nuva.

Turaga Matau.jpg

turaga matau

Matau was the leader of the Le-Koro Matoran for a thousand years. He was called the Singer of Le-Koro by his people. He and his Matoran were constantly on guard for wild Rahi and Teridax’s attacks, and he aided the Matoran in the defense of the Koro with his weakened mask and elemental powers. One day, this all changed; Takua, the Chronicler, found all six of the ancient Toa Stones and used them to summon guardians for the Matoran, but not after rescuing Matau from a Kewa nest.

Matau later returned to Metru Nui with the other Turaga, Takanuva and the Toa Nuva, and the Matoran.

Turaga Nuju.jpg

turaga nuju

As a Turaga, Nuju gradually began to speak only in the language of the birds, training Matoro to be his translator. Nuju claimed that the change in language was due to the fact that if others did not have the patience to hear him speak, then they were not worth talking to. He retained his knowledge of the Matoran language, but used it only in emergencies, such as explaining to a newly-arrived Toa Mata Kopaka his quest.

He designated his translator Matoro as his right hand, and Kopeke as his left. Nuju got lost in the the Drifts after being kidnapped by Rahi. Takua found him, and took him back to Ko-Koro. Nuju then went to the Kini-Nui to see the Toa Stones assembled, and was given back his Ice Pick.

Nuju is now back on Metru Nui with Takanuva, the Toa Nuva, the other Turaga, and the Matoran.

Turaga Whenua.jpg

turaga whenua

As a Turaga, Whenua carries a Drill-like staff known as “the Drill of Onua”. He chose the underground caverns of Onu-Wahi for the location of Onu-Koro, aiding in its construction, and later in its defense, using his remaining powers. He chose Onepu as his right hand Matoran, while his left hand Matoran is Taipu. He was once rescued from a Vatuka by Takua in the Onu-Koro mines, and awarded the Matoran a Volo Lutu Launcher. He met with the Turaga at the Kini-Nui, and returned Whenua’s stolen drill.

Whenua has since returned with the Toa Nuva, the other Turaga, and the Matoran back to Metru Nui.

Turaga Onewa.jpg

turaga onewa

Onewa became known for his ability to judge and resolve disputes fairly, and was nicknamed “Referee” for his efforts. He, together with Turaga Whenua, also invented the sport of Kolhii to solve a dispute between the Po-Matoran and Onu-Matoran. His right hand Matoran was Hewkii while his left hand Matoran is Hafu. When a Kofo-Jaga, a small yet very dangerous scorpion-like Rahi kidnapped Onewa, until he was saved by Takua. He later saw Takua summon the Toa, and met Pohatu when the Toa Mata arrived and told Pohatu of his destiny.

Onewa has since returned with the Toa Nuva, the other Turaga, and the Matoran to Metru Nui.

other turaga

Within the Matoran Universe below-ground, some individual Toa heroes as teams or lone defenders would eventually become Turaga by choice and then lead the Matoran residents. Whether it is the island they originated from or leading a foreign Matoran village from elsewhere.

turaga dume

Former Toa of Fire and Turaga of Metru Nui. Dume's history as a Toa has not yet been revealed, although it is believed that he had some hand in Lhikan's becoming a Toa. After becoming a Turaga, Dume led Metru Nui for thousands of years, helping it to become a thriving metropolis. Under Dume's rule, the Matoran constructed the Kralhi and the Vahki. Dume also authorised Mavrah's researches into ancient sea Rahi, then later ordered the experiments stopped when they threatened the city. It was also Dume who first summoned Lhikan and ten other Toa to battle the Kanohi Dragon that menaced Metru Nui.

Perhaps Dume's bravest act was opposing the Dark Hunters when they wished to establish a base in Metru Nui. Despite threats from the Shadowed One, Dume refused to allow the mercenaries anywhere within the boundaries of the city. This set off a major conflict between the Dark Hunters and a small band of Toa in the city, led by Toa Lhikan himself. The Toa were eventually victorious, despite the defection of Toa Nidhiki and his attempts to betray the city into Dark Hunter hands.

Centuries later, Dume was captured by Teridax and placed inside a sphere which rendered him comatose. The Makuta then impersonated him as part of his plan to capture all of the Matoran in the city. Although the heroic Toa Metru uncovered the ruse, they were unable to rescue Dume prior to their initial escape from the city. After their return and transformed into Toa Hordika, they discovered that Dume's canister had malfunctioned and he was free.

He refused to leave the city with them following the defeat of the Visorak, preferring to watch over Metru Nui in their absence.

Dume was still there when the Toa Nuva returned with the Matoran, and it was he who dispatched the Nuva to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. He continues to rule Metru Nui today.

turaga lhikan

Former Toa of Fire; leader of the Mangai; now Turaga.

Lhikan remained in his cell as a Turaga and so was present when Whenua, Onewa, and Nuju were thrown inside. He used the time to teach the three of them new ways of thinking and approaching problems. This helped all three to discover how to use their Kanohi Mask Powers. Later, when Vakama discovered a Matoran Sphere containing the sleeping form of the real Turaga Dume, Lhikan's suspicions were confirmed. The Dume who had ordered the Toa out of the city and branded the Toa Metru as criminals was an imposter. At the coliseum, the false Dume revealed himself to be Teridax. Lhikan was furious, reminding the Makuta that he had sworn at one time to protect the Matoran.

During Vakama's confrontation with Teridax at the Great Barrier, Lhikan saw that Vakama was unable to properly control the Kanohi Vahi, Mask of Time. He was in mortal danger. At the last possible moment, Lhikan leapt in the path of Teridax's attack, his body wracked by dark energies powerful enough to harm a Toa. They were too much for his weakened Turaga form, and Lhikan died. Vakama took his Mask of Power as a reminder of his heroic sacrifice, and later gave the mask to Jaller. Years later, realising the Matoran had lost all memories of Metru Nui, Vakama began telling them stories of Lhii, a mythical Matoran whose exploits were based on those of Lhikan. This was Vakama's way of ensuring that his hero would never be completely forgotten.

turaga jovan

Former Toa of Magnetism; now Turaga of Voya Nui.

After saving the Great Spirit's life during the Great Disruption, Jovan sacrificed his Toa Power and became Turaga and village leader of the Voya Nui Matoran.

Presiding over an area in the Southern Continent that held a few hundred of Karzahni's poorly altered Matoran workers. He remained there until, roughly 78,100 years after his adventures as a Toa, a series of disastrous events began to break apart the pilot structure of Mata Nui, causing the robot that Jovan's team had worked so hard to protect to crash into the watery surface of Aqua Magna. Many of the Matoran in Jovan's territory survived, but the venerated elder did not.

Biomechanical / matoran universe species

Biomechanical / Matoran Universe Species

Virtually everything in all the Matoran Universe species, Toa, Turaga, Matoran, Skakdi, Rahi etc, are biomechanical. A combination of muscles, organs, and mechanical parts. Most of these beings, however, are not created to be as fully mechanical robots but as living, thinking beings with machine parts and armour. For example, a Piraka can plan and scheme and feel emotions like anger and happiness. They need to breathe, sleep, and consume nutrition to keep themselves energised. They have muscles that help them run, jump, and fight, lungs that take in air, eyes that see and wicked smiles.

But they aren't completely organic nor as mechanical robots - they are instead a combination of living being and machine. But how does this help them? Their machine parts and their armour somehow makes them much less vulnerable to injury. If they are injured, however, they can simply repair themselves much easier or even heal quicker than an ordinary human being.

All beings of the Matoran Universe in their anatomy consist of mechanical parts connected by muscle, so if they need to rebuild themselves, they can simply attach another part to their bodies. The muscle rapidly grows to connect it and therefore they are healed or rebuilt and ready for action.

The result of this is powerful beings who are very hard to hurt, have extremely long lifespans, and can even upgrade themselves as long as they have the technology to help them do it. Matoran, for example, are known to live for thousands of years and have completely rebuilt themselves at least once.

All the Matoran Species in the Matoran Universe were intended to be sentient as ordinary, diminutive workers. As well as a strange and overtly innocent choice (or method) made by the creators (the Great Beings). Regardless of their newly-built alien world being created and flourished for them as islands, regions, and underground caves; obtained into an armoured and mechanical robot vessel.

virtues and principles of matoran society

Virtues and Principles of Matoran Society

The Three Virtues were the centre of everyday Matoran life on Mata Nui, and a symbol of hope. Each village on Mata Nui focused on certain Virtues and sub-virtues (called Principles), pertaining to their unique lifestyles and environments. Using the Principles, the Matoran derived certain Skills that aided them in playing the sport of Kolhii. Each Principle had an enemy, which happened to be the powers of the six Rahkshi that Teridax unleashed on the island of Mata Nui.
