The Makoki Stones

Six stone fragments used by the Rahaga as a key to unlock the hiding place of the Kanohi Avohkii in the Onu-Metru Archives. Decades later, they were collected by Tahu's Toa team shortly after their arrival on Mata Nui. Fitted together, the stones formed a key that opened a passage from Kini-Nui to Teridax's Lair.

Aided by the Rahaga, the Toa Hordika had to find the Makoki Stones to get the Mask of Light. After assembling the six pieces, they arrived at a temple, where they placed the pieces onto a table to reveal the mask. The stones were then taken to Mata Nui.

On Mata Nui, the Toa Mata also used the Makoki Stones to unlock the passageway through Kini-Nui after receiving their Golden Kanohi. From there, they recollected the stones (made by Vakama and the other Turaga as spares, due to his vision) and placed all three in two niches to form demi-spheres, which opened chambers in which the Toa formed Toa Kaita. Two, fully transformed warriors consisted of three Toa.

The Brotherhood Tablet

A tablet detailing secret inscriptions of the Brotherhood of Makuta's grand scheme in overthrowing Mata Nui's position of power as well as a record of every Brotherhood of Makuta member, their skill level, weaknesses, current location, etc. The tablet was once guarded in a Toa tower but stolen by ex-Dark Hunter Vezok; a member of the rogue Skakdi group, the Piraka. Thousands of years later, Hakann bought the freedom of the captured Dark Hunters from Toa Lhikan by arranging the return of the tablet. Later, the Dark Hunters stole it back again and it was split into six pieces.

The Dark Hunters auctioned them off, and in each piece at a time, with the Brotherhood of Makuta as the highest bidder for all six.

The stones were cemented and put back together by the Makuta until the raid of Norik and his team of Toa. Whom invaded the Brotherhood's main fortress on the home island of Destral and stole the Mask of Light and the Tablet.

The Tablet was recorded by a deceased Toa whom formerly served the Makuta as an employed member of the Toa Hagah teams as their bodyguard, and was eventually killed by them. Recording every account of Makuta Teridax's plan written on his chamber wall, as well as their ambitions in overthrowing Mata Nui. Long before Zaktan's discovery.

After turning into Rahaga, they eventually broke the tablet. Deciding this type of vast information would be potentially too valuable if ever fallen again into the hands of the Makuta.

So they copied them into their paper scrolls and remoulded the broken tablet pieces into a complete spherical object of stone with fitted keys. Known as the Makoki Stones. Made from their limited powers and their elemental spinners known as the Rhotuka.

They then travelled to the Archives in Onu-Metru at Metru Nui; and crafted newly made niches to fit the reshaped and individual pieces as the keys. Before hiding away the Mask of Light.

Staff of Artakha

The Staff of Artakha was an extremely powerful artefact the Toa Nuva needed to recover in preparation for Mata Nui's awakening. It was created by Artakha years ago, and had once been kept in the Onu-Metru Archives, but was eventually stolen in a raid by the Dark Hunters centuries ago.

The Toa Nuva went to Odina to recover the Staff, only to find it was not there. They next traveled to Xia to find it, believing "The Shadowed One" had it. Once there, Onua encountered Makuta Icarax, who had stolen the staff.

Teridax tried to recreate the Nui Stone with the staff (given to him by Icarax), but an interruption by Brutaka ceased this action. Brutaka passed the staff off to Botar, who brought it to Daxia. There, Helryx was able to use the Staff's power to repair all the damage to the Matoran Universe that the Great Cataclysm had done.

The Staff of Artakha possesses immense power. While in Daxia, Trinuma placed it in a pedestal, allowing it to repair the entire Matoran Universe; everything as a result of the Great Cataclysm was healed. This great feat was described as only a fraction of the staff's power. Despite this great power, the Staff still wasn't able to repair Karda Nui, because it was too heavily shielded.

Other than that, the Staff's power was being able to "heal" something, no matter how damaged it was.

Even though the Staff was named after Artakha, this was not his weapon or tool, though he did create it.

Amana Volo Sphere

Amana Volo Spheres was a powerful globe of dark energy discharging from certain Rahi upon the removal of an Infected Kanohi. These free-floating balls of energy could be absorbed by other beings to boost their strength and could restore health.

Bamboo Pole

Kotu, a Ga-Matoran on Mata Nui, could make a bamboo pole with 15 pieces of Bamboo. They could be used to help to make a Kohlii stick.

Barrows

Wheeled objects used by Onu-Matoran Miners.

Lightstones

A glowing crystal mined by Onu-Matoran both in Metru Nui and on Mata Nui. These crystals were used to provide illumination. In their raw, unrefined state, lightstones can be so bright as to be almost blinding to unshielded eyes. It was at one time believed that lightstones provided had a self-contained power source, but this was largely disproved by the fact that so many of them were doused when the Metru Nui power plant was wrecked.

The fact that some of the stones continued to work, particularly on Mata Nui, would seem to indicate that there was a second source of energy for them other than the Metru Nui plant.

They also exist in other colours such as blue and red.

These were also used within the Matoran Universe as they are unnaturally charged with flowing energies from Karda Nui; providing enough light for the Matoran Universe as large versions of these crystals. Situated and built-in into the domes that houses the islands and regions deeper beneath surface levels of the Great Spirit Robot.

Six giant Lightstones in Karda Nui were placed there within the Codrex by the Great Beings. These Lightstones were intended to be charged with energy provided by a Toa, and then be sent to Mata Nui in order to revive him from his slumber.

Makuta Stone

The Makuta Stone was a shard of Makuta Teridax's Toa Seal, scraped out by Roodaka. Roodaka then stored the shard in her armor, planning to use the Elemental Powers of the Toa Hordika to free Teridax. She ultimately succeeded, allowing Makuta to escape and teleport her away. Vakama then claimed the rock.

On Mata Nui, the Toa Metru-turned Turaga used the shard to represent the Makuta in their stories and tales. When the Matoran returned to Metru Nui, the Turaga took the stone with them. They later carried it out of the Matoran Universe onto Spherus Magna after the Great Spirit Robot was irreparably damaged.

The Book of Chronicles

The Book of Chronicles was an electronic book that allowed the user to record video footage of events that he or she witnessed.

Nothing is known of the Book's history, aside from the fact that it was in the possession of Turaga Nokama by the time that the Toa Mata arrived. After a wandering Matoran named Takua helped to save Ga-Koro from a Tarakava attack and Po-Koro from an epidemic, Turaga Onewa decided that the valiant Matoran was worthy of being the island's Chronicler, and gave Takua a golden chisel to give to Nokama as a sign of the Stone Turaga's faith in the Matoran.

After giving it to Turaga Nokama, Takua was appointed to the position of Chronicler by the Turaga of Water, Takua received the Book of Chronicles from her; this would enable him to record his experiences during his travels around the island, and so that even if something happened to him, they would still have a full record of the events he witnessed.

Takua presumably used the Book of Chronicles for the rest of his tenure as Chronicler; it is unknown if it was used by his successors in the position, Hahli and later Kopeke.

Charms

The Charms were small stones with carvings on them symbolizing the Virtues, Principles, and Skills of the Matoran. After the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal and the initiation of the Kohlii Tournament on Mata Nui, Hahli collected the charms and used them to get the six Crystals.

Each village on Mata Nui had three or four charms associated with it, one or two representing that village's Virtue or Virtues, one representing the Principle of that village, and another symbolizing the Skill that its Matoran focused on.

These charms acted as the keys to their respective Wahi's Temple. For example, the charms of Unity, Purity, and Speed were needed to unlock the three doors inside the Temple of Purity, where she then recovered the Crystal of Purity.

Cowrie Shell

The Cowrie Shell was a type of shell found underwater, in the East Garden of Ga-Koro. It was one of the materials needed to make flax.

Crystals

The Crystals were six artefacts found by Hahli on Mata Nui. They were probably lost in the water when Mata Nui awakened. These were the names of the crystals and the Element they corresponded to.

  • Purity (Water) - The Ga-Matoran believed in the Principle of Purity, derived from Unity. It granted Speed, and its enemy was Poison.

  • Prosperity (Earth) - The Onu-Matoran believed in the Principle of Prosperity, derived from Duty and Destiny. It granted Stamina, and its enemy was Hunger.

  • Peace (Ice) - The Ko-Matoran believed in the Principle of Peace, derived from Destiny. It granted Willpower, and its enemy was Anger.

  • Faith (Air) - The Le-Matoran believed in the Principle of Faith, derived from Unity and Duty. It granted Accuracy, and its enemy was Fragmentation.

  • Creation (Stone) - The Po-Matoran believed in the Principle of Creation, derived from Unity and Destiny. It granted Strategy, and its enemy was Disintegration.

  • Courage (Fire) - The Ta-Matoran believed in the Principle of Courage, derived from Duty. It granted Strength, and its enemy was Fear.

Element of Melting

The Element of Melting was a strange purple crystal that could be found in Ko-Wahi. It could be used to quickly turn ice into pure water for the Ko-Koro water supply. Takua had to find the Element of Melting during his search for the Toa Stones on Mata Nui.

Force Sphere

A Force Sphere was a broken section of a Chute that collapsed in on itself. That section would become magnetically powered and travel through the Chute it broke off of, sucking in anything it passed. Over time, the Force Sphere would grow in strength and eventually destroy the Chute it was in.

Toa Matau had to retrieve the Le-Metru Great Disk from a Force Sphere.

Flag

Flags were used by Hahli to navigate the Drifts. Two Nails, one Bamboo Pole and some Seaweed were needed by Arktinen the Icesmith in the construction of one Flag.

Flax

Flax was a material used by the Ga-Matoran of Ga-Koro to make String.

Uses

Flax wasn't used in any practical means by itself, but as a material to make string. It was made out of Harakeke Plants and Cowrie Shells. The string made out of Flax could be used to create other items, including:

Heat stone

Heat Stones were used by Matoran as a source of warmth in cold-weather conditions such as those experienced in Ko-Wahi.

Appearance

Heat stones were similar in appearance to the crystalline lightstones, but produced less light, and much more heat - enough, in fact, to instantly melt ice. To contain this heat and make it safe to hold, the actual stone itself was contained inside a handheld, heat-retentive metal canister resembling a miniature version of those which had held the Toa Mata, albeit with four holes in the domed cap instead of six. This lid could be easily removed to access the heat stone's warmth, and was kept shut when not in use.

History

When heat stones were first discovered and used by Matoran is unknown, but they were commonly used as handheld tools in Ko-Wahi during the millennium in which Makuta started attacking the Matoran of Mata Nui.

One such heat stone was used by the Ta-Matoran who manned the outpost at the North March in Ko-Wahi; they were later assaulted by Makuta and massacred, and the Heat stone was one of the few things that remained intact in the abandoned outpost. A wandering Matoran named Takua - who had been enlisted by the Guard's CaptainJala (later renamed as Jaller), to investigate the loss of contact with the outpost - came across its ruins and salvaged the stray heat stone.

Shortly afterward, he used this stone to melt an icy glacier behind which a Ko-Matoran named Kopeke had been frozen. This particular heat stone was discarded and abandoned by Takua during his escape from a swarm of newly-awakened Lehvak when he was searching for the tool that would help him escape from the Bohrok Nest.

Another heat stone was in the possession of an Onu-Matoran inventor named Nuparu during the Gahlok attack on Onu-Koro; when he and two other Onu-Matoran, Taipu and Onepu, got trapped in a cave-in, Nuparu used his heat stone to power a welding tool that he used to construct the Boxor from spare Bohrok parts.

All heat stones were abandoned by the Matoran after they evacuated to Spherus Magna.

Memory Crystal

Memory Crystals were objects used in Knowledge Towers to store information.

Use

Data could be recorded in the crystals by means of physical contact with a scholar, but the operation had to be triggered by the will of that scholar. Frost Beetles were believed to have attained greater-than-average intelligence by consuming Memory Crystals.

Lava-Gem

A Lava-Gem was a valuable item found on the Tren Krom Peninsula. A Matoran village there used the gem to appease the volcano, until Vultraz stole it. The village was then buried under lava due to several timed explosions made by Vultraz.

Toa Stone

A stone containing a small amount of Toa Power.

Scroll of Preparations

A list of the necessary preparations for Mata Nui to awaken.

Keystone

The Keystones were six pieces of a tablet detailing the way that the Great Spirit Mata Nui was to be awakened that was kept with Av-Matoran. They also acted as the key to disrupting the field around and opening the Codrex.

Location

Below are the locations of the six pieces and the current status of each piece.

  1. Formerly with Solek, now with the Phantoka Toa Nuva.

  2. Formerly with Kirop, now with the Phantoka Toa Nuva.

  3. Formerly stolen from the Av-Matoran by the Phantoka Makuta, now with the Phantoka Toa Nuva

  4. Formerly somewhere in the Swamp of Secrets, acquired by Gali and now with the Mistika Toa Nuva.

  5. Formerly with an unnamed Av-Matoran; now with the Mistika Toa Nuva.

  6. Formerly in Krika's base camp; now with the Mistika Toa Nuva.

Knowledge Crystal

Knowledge Towers were grown by tossing a knowledge crystal (the size of a Matoran's hand) into special cradles located in various spots in Ko-Metru. The crystal then grows in a rapid pace until it stands along the older towers.

Each tower contained living quarters, libraries, observatories, special storage areas, and laboratories.

Matoran Wishing Staff

A staff used by Matoran that can break very easily.

Widgets

A system of currency.

History

The Widget was the Matoran currency of Mata Nui that was employed shortly after the Bohrok were first shut down, many of which were stripped down for parts and the Widgets from the Bohrok were used as the currency afterwards. It took place of bartering and trading on the island. The currency was based on the protodermic currency originally used in Metru Nui.

Vuata Maca Crystal

The Vuata Maca Crystals (voo-AH-tah MAH-cah Crystals) were crystals that provided energy to the Vuata Maca Tree. Takua retrieved two from Onu-Wahi in order to cleanse the poison from the tree. There are Vuata Maca Crystals in other Wahis (Regions) as well (as each Koro has a tree).

Suva

A special storage system for Kanohi.

Keystones assembled

Nail

Fastener used by Onu-Matoran.

Net

Item made out of string.

Ore

A rock-like substance mined in Onu-Koro.

History

Ore was a stone-like natural object, usually mined in Onu-Wahi. Ore was one of the resources mined by the Onu-Matoran, and could be used to make equipment, like pickaxes, among other things.

Razor Crystals

Sharp stones capable of shredding a Matoran's armour and tissue.

Tablet of Transit

A Tablet of Transit was a small stone carved with the symbol of the Brotherhood of Makuta. The tablet signified that the bearer was an ally of the Brotherhood; therefore, anyone carrying one could not be detained by a Brotherhood member for any reason.

History

Barraki Takadox received a Brotherhood Tablet of Transit in return for revealing the League of Six Kingdoms' plan to rebel against the Great Spirit, ensuring that when the Brotherhood's army defeated the League, Takadox could prove that he had helped the Brotherhood and thus escape punishment. It was eventually destroyed by Makuta Teridax.

Another Tablet was used by Vican when he went to Destral to summon Icarax.

Makuta Krika offered one to Gali Nuva when he was willing to let her leave Karda Nui, after defeating her and warning that the future bode ill should Mata Nui awaken.
