island of mata nui

The Great Spirit revered by Matoran. Both the Great Temple in Metru Nui and Kini Nui temple on the island of Mata Nui were dedicated to him, and of course the island of Mata Nui was named in his honour. According to Matoran Legend, Mata Nui was sent from paradise by the Great Beings to care for all living things. After many thousands of years of benevolent guidance, Mata Nui was eventually struck down by the Makuta. Resulted in Mata Nui, sinking into an eternal dying coma and therefore heralded into an endless reign of darkness for the Matoran.

Upon Mata Nui's fall, a team of six heroes known as The Toa Mata: Tahu, Gali, Lewa, Kopaka, Onua, and Pohatu were dispatched from the world deep below the island (Karda Nui) to awaken him. The island of Mata Nui was located on the endless sea of the ocean moon known as Aqua Magna. A deceivingly ordinary and singular moon yet a gigantic chunk of an entire, seperate planet (Spherus Magna).

The island was named after the Great Spirit Mata Nui by Turaga Vakama, a former Toa of Fire and leader of the Toa Metru. It consists of six regions: Ga-Wahi, Po-Wahi, Ko-Wahi, Ta-Wahi, Le-Wahi, and Onu-Wahi. Each region has distinct geographic features and the climates are vastly different from one place to the other.

Each of the wahi was home to a koro, or village, built by the Matoran and their Turaga. The Matoran adapted well to their new surroundings, making use of natural terrain for defense as well as training some of the Rahi beasts who had traveled to the island from below.

regions of mata nui

regions of mata nui

Ta-Wahi -  A hot, volcanic region, site of the Mangai Volcano. It is also home to Ta-Matoran and scores of Rahi that thrive on heat and flame. Tahu's canister also washed up on the shore of Ta-Wahi. This region was also site of one of the first Bohrok attacks, as well as a devastating onslaught by the Rahkshi that resulted in the destruction of Ta-Koro. The largest Matoran stadium of Kohlii is also located there.

Po-Wahi -  A barren, rocky wasteland located in the far northern region of Mata Nui. It was home to Po-Koro and the Po-Matoran. Pohatu's canister also washed up on the shore of Po-Wahi. Numerous Rahi live there, including Nui-Jaga, Sand Tarakavas, Tunnelers, Husi, and many more. Po-Wahi suffered some damage during the Bohrok invasion, but was largely spared by the Bohrok-Kal and Rahkshi.

Le-Wahi -  A region of thick, green jungle and fetid swamps, located on the southern end of Mata Nui. Le-Wahi was the site of the village of Le-Koro and home to numerous Rahi such as the Brakas Monkeys and the Gukko Birds. Le-Matoran live in the treetops above the Fau Swamp. This area suffered badly at the claws of the Lehvak bohrok swarms.

Ga-Wahi -  Region in northeastern Mata Nui dominated by the waters of Naho Bay. Home to numerous Aquatic Rahi, including the Ruki Fish, "Makuta Fish", Tarakava, and Takea Sharks. Seaweed and lily pads in the bay provided a foundation for the village to float upon.

Ko-Wahi - Icy region on Mata Nui that encompassed Mount Ihu and the drifts. The village of Ko-Koro was also located there. Snowfall and Avalanches are common here. A temporarily powerless Kopaka Nuva and Pohatu Nuva were menaced by a Muaka tiger in Ko-Wahi. Takua and Jaller travelled through Ko-Wahi on their quest to find Takanuva.

Onu-Wahi- A largely barren region riddled with underground, Matoran-made tunnels; located in northwestern Mata Nui. On the surface, it appeared nothing lived there but the occasional Rahi. In fact, there was a thriving village in the tunnels beneath the surface. Toa Onua's canister washed up on the shore of Onu-Wahi. Onu-Wahi has also suffered serious damage during the Bohrok invasion, and the village was destroyed when the Rahkshi attacked. Subterranean tunnels linked Onu-Wahi to other regions on Mata Nui.

Villages of mata nui

Ta-Koro -  Village on Mata Nui and home to the Ta-Matoran. Ta-Koro was located in the lake of Fire and its citizens lived in homes made of cooled lava. A small lava stream flowed through the village, providing it with heat.

Ta-Koro was governed by Turaga Vakama and protected by Toa Tahu the Toa of Fire and the Ta-Koro Guard. The Village was eventually destroyed by the Rahkshi, vanishing beneath the lava without a trace. It has not been rebuilt ever since.

Po-Koro - Village on Mata Nui and home to the Po-Matoran. Po-Koro was located in the desert to the far north of the island. Structures here were carved from rock and intended to blend in with the surrounding area. The climate was harsh, with unrelenting heat and sandstorms.

Le-Koro -  Village on Mata Nui and home to the Le-Matoran. Le-Koro is led by Turaga Matau and protected by Toa Lewa the Toa of Air. The village was built in the treetops above the Fau Swamp. Visitors to the area could often hear the Le-Matoran up in the trees, chattering to each other in "Treespeak".

Ga-Koro - Village on Mata Nui and home to the Ga-Matoran. Ga-Koro was led by Turaga Nokama and protected by Toa Gali the Toa of Water. The village floated atop the waters off the northeastern coast of the island. Whirlpools and strong currents combined to make the village a dangerous place for outsiders to visit. Takua (later Toa Takanuva) aided the village when it was invaded by wildlife beasts and creatures known as the Rahi, shortly after the arrival of Gali. Ga-Koro was also menaced by the Pahrak bohrok swarms during the invasion of the Bohrok.

Ko-Koro - Village on Mata Nui and home to the Ko-Matoran. Ko-Koro was hidden beneath a massive ice block that separates two glaciers, and surrounded by huge crevasses that could swallow the unwary.

Ko-Koro was led by Turaga Nuju and protected by Toa Kopaka the Toa of Ice. The village was severely damaged by the Rahkshi.

Onu-Koro - A village of tunnels, caves, and mines located beneath the surface of Onu-Wahi. It is home to Turaga Whenua and the Onu-Matoran and was protected by Toa Onua the Toa of Earth. Onu-Koro was also the site of Protodermis mines as well as Ussal Crab races.

The village was flooded by the Gahlok bohrok swarms and later destroyed by the Rahkshi.

Mount Ihu - A high snow-and-ice capped mountain named after in memory by Turaga Nuju's late mentor and friend whom died on Metru Nui when Nuju was a Ko-Matoran.

Mangai Volcano - A fiery volcano in Ta-Wahi named after the Toa Mangai. A Toa Team led by Lhikan on Metru Nui.

Naho Bay - also called as Lake Naho and Gali's Bay, was a large body of water located in Ga-Wahi to the northeast of the island of Mata Nui. The bay was named by the Toa Metru in memory of the fallen Toa Mangai of Water named Naho. The Matoran then made a statue of the Kanohi Kaukau over its waterfalls, in honour of the coming Toa Gali.

Kini Nui Temple

A great temple on the island of Mata Nui, constructed in part by the Turaga and Matoran shortly after their arrival on the island. Takua and his allies (also known as the Chronicler's Company led by Takua) fought to defend this site from the Rahi attack. Later, the Toa brought their Kanohi Masks here and recieved Golden Masks that contained a full range of six powers. They entered the temple using fragments of the Makoki Stones and fought the Manas, the Shadow Toa, and Teridax. Later, Kini-Nui would be the site of the first appearance of the Rahkshi on Mata Nui.

However, despite the authenticity of a great temple, it was in fact a mechanism of an entire planetary exploration system; preserved for Mata Nui himself. Created and installed by the Great Beings; the formation of Kini-Nui directly aided Mata Nui through the four spires of the temple. Informing him of surface events; the Matoran Universe below; whilst performing numerous and cosmic tasks of his own causes in the process.

Regardless of being a stone-built temple in design that is formerly inside of Mata Nui; the structure was an entire mechanism as well as a safe and direct gateway passage for inhabitants to travel back to their original yet alien home world (The Matoran Universe) below ground.

The design of the temple, however, was in fact a reminiscence to the Arena Magna on Spherus Magna.

Kini-Nui Temple

Suva Kaita

A shrine built by the Turaga (the former Toa Metru). After the discovery of the Kini-Nui "temple" on Mata Nui, the Turaga built a stone-carved dome rock within the very centre of the structure that allows an entire underground passage to the Matoran Universe below-ground. A home world they originated from, as well as an underground alien world inhabited by other Matoran and other species. The Toa Mata also used the Suva Kaita to enter Teridax's lair after battling the Manas underground. When Teridax; member of the Makuta species and leader of the Brotherhood; followed the Toa Metru and the Matoran to Mata Nui, he constructed his lair (also known as the Mangaia Lair) beneath Kini-Nui and inadvertently situated it next to the Kini-Nui mechanism. He also builded a huge stone gateway that prevent others from ever returning to their original homeland: the island city of Metru Nui.

The Turaga had also installed a system which could be unlocked using the Makoki Stone to open the passageway within the Suva Kaita.

Amaja nui and the amaja circle

Amaja-Nui was a part of the temple of Kini-Nui. There is a pit of sand in the middle, and some stairs leading to it.

The Turaga used to tell stories on the sandpit, using stones to symbolize the beings and characters. It also consists of two circular platforms with a sandpit. With the other larger than the other. However, it laid between a huge bust of the stone head of a Toa (later the shape of the Pakari mask worn by Takua) and the Kini-Nui temple on the other.

3D render of Kini Nui. Made by r/bioniclelego.

The Amaja Nui were created and built by the Turaga and the Matoran. The exterior of the Kini-Nui temple consisted of two distinct regions, an upper area that contained the Suva Kaita and a lower area that consisted of the Amaja-Nui. As part of its design, the Turaga made it so that only the assembled Makoki Stone could open the entrance to the tunnel underneath the Suva Kaita. For most of its history since then, it was used mainly by the Turaga to hold meetings and to recount legends, such as The Legend of Mata Nui.

From there, the lower region of the Amaja Nui contains two circular platforms and a sandpit. Otherwise known as the Amaja Circles. Where the Turaga recount their tales of Mata Nui and Metru Nui at the large Amaja Circle as its sandpit or hold meetings at the average circle.

The Amaja-Nui has been destroyed by the newly reawakened Bohrok. Preparing for Mata Nui's awakening.

Suva

Shrines found in the villages of Mata Nui, the Great Temple on Metru Nui, and in various other places. These are commonly dedicated to individual Toa or groups of Toa, and are used as storage space for Kanohi Masks. Toa are able to teleport their masks directly from the suva to their faces. The Suva on Mata Nui were also used to hold the Toa Mata and Turaga's collected Kanohi, allowing them to mentally retrieve the masks from anywhere on the island. They later held the Toa Nuva's Nuva Masks and their symbols.

The six Matoran on Metru Nui whom became Toa Metru did this by placing Toa Stones into the suva located in the Great Temple in Ga-Metru, unleashing the energy that transformed them.

Suva shrines of the Toa Mata/Toa Nuva on Mata Nui

  • Ta-Suva - A shrine to Toa Tahu in Ta-Koro. Kanohi Masks and Tahu's Nuva Symbol were kept here. Tahnok-Kal stole the Nuva Symbol from the Ta-Suva, robbing Tahu Nuva of his elemental power of fire. The suva was later destroyed, along with the village itself, by the Rahkshi shortly after the discovery of the Mask of Light. It also was here where Nokama confirmed that the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light, belonged to the Toa of Light.

  • Ga-Suva - A shrine to Toa Gali in Ga-Koro. Kanohi Masks and Gali's Nuva Symbol were kept here. During the Battle of Ga-Koro, it was able to shoot beams of light at a group of Pahrak when the Toa Mata had imprisoned the Bahrag underground. The Ga-Suva was destroyed by the Bohrok shortly before the reawakening of Mata Nui.

  • Le-Suva - A shrine to Toa Lewa in Le-Koro. Kanohi Masks and Gali's Nuva Symbol were kept here. Lehvak-Kal stole the Nuva Symbol from the Le-Suva, robbing Lewa Nuva of his elemental power of air. It has since been destroyed by the Bohrok shortly before the reawakening of Mata Nui.

  • Po-Suva - A shrine to Toa Pohatu in Po-Koro. Kanohi Masks and Pohatu's Nuva Symbol were kept here. Pahrak-Kal stole the Nuva Symbol from the Po-Suva, robbing Pohatu Nuva of his elemental power of stone. The Suva was later destroyed by the Bohrok hordes.

  • Ko-Suva - A shrine in the village of Ko-Koro to honour the Toa of Ice Kopaka. The Nuva Symbol was originally stolen from here by Kohrak-Kal. Kopaka's Masks of Power were also kept on the suva. It was later destroyed by the Bohrok swarms after they were reawakened by the Toa Nuva.

  • Onu-Suva - A shrine to Toa Onua in Onu-Koro. Kanohi Masks and Onua's Nuva Symbol were kept here. Nuhvok-kal stole the Nuva Symbol from the Onu-Suva, robbing Onua Nuva of his elemental power of earth. It was later destroyed by the Bohrok when they purged the island of Mata Nui.

island of metru nui

An Island city floated on a silver sea far beneath the surface of the island of Mata Nui. Metru Nui is the original home of the Matoran who later settle on Mata Nui. Metru Nui was divided into six districts, or metru: Ga-Metru, Ta-Metru, Ko-Metru, Le-Metru, Po-Metru, and Onu-Metru. It was also known as the City Of Legends. During much of its existence, Metru Nui was ruled by a Turaga named Dume and was protected by the heroic Toa Mangai led by Lhikan, the Toa of fire and leader of the Mangai. The island was also guarded by the mechanical Vahki.

One of the most important cities in the known universe, Metru Nui has long been a prize coveted by the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters. Possession of the city - and more importantly, control of its Matoran - would have conferred tremendous power and influence on its owner.

After being abandoned for centuries, the city is once again teeming with life. However, it remains a target for those who wish it - and the Great Spirit Mata Nui - harm.

Metru Nui can be accessible by ship, airship, and through a series of ancient and unsafe underwater transport chutes. For most of the last 1,000 years, all but one of the sea gates leading to the waters around Metru Nui were closed. The other means of access to Metru Nui is a series of tunnels that lead aboveground to the island of Mata Nui.

Although these have been partially explored, they remain largely unknown and dangerous.

The reborn Metru Nui is ruled by Turaga Dume and has spent the past 1,000 years watching over his empty city, aided only by the Rahaga on their occasional visits. He is now assisted by the six Turaga who formerly ruled Mata Nui - Vakama, Nokama, Matau, Onewa, Nuju, and Whenua.

Thus far, relations have been strained between Dume and the other Turaga. While Dume was thrilled to see them and the Matoran return, he has never had to share rule before and it is a new experience.

As crisis mount, he finds himself growing short-tempered with the others. The six Mata Nui Turaga forged quite different, almost paternal, relationships with the Matoran, something Dume has a hard time understanding.

districts of the island city

Ta-Metru

Home of the mask, this district was once filled with working forges and vats of molten protodermis. Much of the metru was melted due to spillage from the vats, and only small portions are habitable.

Ga-Metru

Home to scholars and teachers, Ga-Metru was best known as the site of the Great Temple. The temple was badly damaged by Toa Hordika Vakama during the Visorak invasion. It is now in the process of being rebuilt.

Le-Metru

Once the transport hub of Metru Nui, this district was badly damaged by the earthquake 1,000 years ago.

Onu-Metru

Site of the Great Archives, a museum/zoo featuring every creature and artifact in the city. It was shattered by the quake, allowing all the Rahi imprisoned within to escape. Onu-Matoran are hard at work rebuilding it, though it will take a great deal of time to complete the work.

Ko-Metru

At one time, this was the center of knowledge and thought in the city. But the quake toppled the crystalline Knowledge Towers, shattering them.  Work is being done in the metru, but Le-Metru is currently being given priority because of the need to get the transport system up and running again.

Po-Metru

Least damaged of all the metru, Po-Metru consists of mountains and great barren plains. Many of the newly returned Matoran are living here while their own metru are being repaired.

the great temple

Arguably the most important building in Metru Nui, the Great Temple was the spiritual center of the city. It was built on a spit of land apart from the rest of Ga-Metru and revered by Matoran from all districts. It was heavily patrolled by the  Vahki Bordakh to protect it from Rahi attacks.

The Great Temple was the home of the Toa Suva. A round stone structure said to be the source of Toa Power. The suva boasted six slots into which Toa Stones could be placed. Lhikan, Toa of Fire and leader of the Toa Mangai, stole six Toa Stones from this site and gave them to six Matoran- Matau, Nokama, Nuju, Onewa, Vakama, and Whenua. These six were later transformed from Matoran into Toa Metru. Kanohi masks of power were also stored in the Great Temple. Amazingly, the structure survived, relatively intact, the earthquake that struck Metru Nui.

Toa Hordika Nokama and the blue Rahaga named Gaaki, a former Toa and member of the Hagah, encountered a Gate Guardian (a Visorak Breed) there while searching for Great Masks. The Rahaga and the Toa Hordika also journeyed there in search of clues to the location of an intelligent Rahi warrior named Keetongu.

The Great Temple was later largely destroyed due to the actions of Toa Hordika Vakama. It has since been restored by the Ga-Matoran from Mata Nui.

locations and places within the districts

Locations and Places within the Districts

  • Protodermis Reclamation Yard - An Area of Ta- Metru in which damaged masks and tools were kept prior to their being melted down. Toa Vakama journeyed here whilst searching for the missing Ta-Matoran named Nuhrii. The Matoran caretaker of the facility is reported to talk to the Kanohi masks in his care as if they were living beings.

  • Prison of the Dark Hunters - A series of prison cells inside a cave network in Onu-Metru, used by the Dark Hunters to keep important Prisoners. Lhikan (Turaga), Whenua, Nuju, and Onewa were held there after their capture. Lhikan taught the three Toa skills that would help them focus and learn to use their Kanohi mask powers. Both Onewa and Nuju discovered their powers while in captivity, and Nuju's Kanohi Matatu, the Mask of Telekinesis, made it possible for him to tear stones from the wall and free them. The Prison of the Dark Hunters was also guarded by squads of Mechanical Vahki.

  • Protodermis Reclamation Furnace - An enclosure containing an extremely hot flame, used to melt down flawed creations in Ta-Metru. Items stored in the Protodermis Reclamation Yard were sent here to be reduced into liquid Protodermis. Nidhiki (former Toa of Air and member of the Mangai) attempted to kill Vakama and Onewa there.

  • Protodermis Warehouse - Structures in Po-Metru that held an assortment of parts awaiting assembly. Components of Vahki, furniture, and other items were shipped to Po-Metru from Ta-Metru and put together in Assembler's Villages. Toa Onewa came to a protodermis warehouse during his search for the Po-Matoran named Ahkmou.

  • Assembler's Village - Small settlements scattered throughout Po-Metru on Metru Nui, home to the crafters who assemble Matoran goods. Parts were shipped to these villages via chute, boat, airship, and Ussal cart, and these were then painstakingly assembled by skilled Po-Matoran. Due to the relative isolation of these villages, they were extremely vulnerable to Rahi attack. In the past, assembler's villages had been menaced by Stone rats, Kinloka, Rock Raptors, and scores of other beasts. The Toa Metru fought Nidhiki and Krekka there, in a village later destroyed by a Kikanalo stampede.

  • Canyon of Unending Whispers - Geographic feature in Po-Metru on Metru Nui, located near the Prison of the Dark Hunters. The canyon got its name because of the abundance of echoes. Vakama, Nokama, Matau, and the Kikanalo Rahi battled Vahki there while attempting to save the other Toa Metru.

  • Sculpture Fields - Great, barren plains in Po-Metru used for the creation and display of massive statues. Anything too big to be carved in an enclosed space is worked on here. Portions of the Sculpture Fields became unstable due to Rahi activity, and Matoran were barred from entire sections. Toa Onewa pursued Ahkmou through the Sclupture Fields. The Po-Metru Great Disk was found embedded in a rock pillar here.

  • Ga-Metru Schools - Ga-Metru was the educational center of Metru Nui and boasted many schools. Among the subjects taught here were Protodermis Purification, translation, and Matoran history. Ga-Metru employed Matoran from other districts to do menial tasks so that Ga-Matoran could focus on their studies. Prior to becoming a Toa, Nokama was a teacher in a Ga-Metru school and Vhisola was one of her students.

  • The Archives - The living museum of Onu-Metru, which extended far below the surface and below many other metru as well. Here could be found virtually every tool, artifact, and creature of Metru Nui's past. Staffed by a large number of Onu-Matoran, it was once the workplace of Whenua before his transformation into a Toa.

  • Fields of Construction - A large, open area in Po-Metru where assorted pieces were assembled to make goods for use throughout Metru Nui.

Coliseum; ruled by Turaga Dume; and sporting arena of Akilini

Canyon of Unending Whispers

The Coliseum

The sporting Arena, power station, and seat of government for Metru Nui. The largest building in the city, it sat at the meeting point of the six metru boundaries. It was home to Turaga Dume. The central arena of the coliseum was used for citywide Akilini tournaments as well as Vahki training exercises. Below that were storage areas. Farther down, there was a power station that relied on the flow of liquid protodermis to generate energy for the city.

The Toa Metru made their first major public appearance at the coliseum, where they were challenged by Teridax (posing as Turaga Dume) to prove themselves to be Toa. The Coliseum floor was activated, causing the surface to move like ocean waves and huge pillars of protodermis to rise up in an irregular pattern. When the Toa failed to keep their footing, they were branded as imposters and their capture was ordered. Nuju, Onewa, Whenua were captured in a whirlpool and Vakama, Nokama, and Matau were forced to flee.  United, the Toa Metru returned there to confront the Makuta and attempt to save the Matoran.

The city's population had been placed in spheres and rendered comatose, and those spheres were then loaded into the storage area. The Toa managed to recover six of the spheres even as the Makuta drained the energy from the city's power plant. They were forced to leave the remainder of the spheres behind as they made their escape from the city.

Later, the Toa returned to Metru Nui in an effort to save the rest of the Matoran. They discovered that the Coliseum had been taken over by the Visorak horde and its leaders, Sidorak and Roodaka. Following their transformation into Toa Hordika, the heroes were able to defeat the Visorak in the Coliseum in a ferocious battle. During the fight, Sidorak was slain by Keetongu in the building's main arena.

The moto-hub

Site of the vehicle manufacturing factories and Chute system controls in Metru Nui. The Moto-Hub was the center of Le-Metru and the place of employment for roughly half of the Le-Matoran. Chutes, air vehicles, and ground vehicles were all produced there, with the latter often being tried out on the test track. Kongu worked there as a chute controller and Matau spent much of his spare time here when he was a Matoran.

The Moto-Hub was badly damaged in an earthquake prior to the Visorak invasion. The Toa Metru hid there to avoid a Vahki squad and later defeated a mutant Lohrak who was on the loose in the structure.

Methods of Transportation

  • Chutes - Primary transport system for the city of Metru Nui. Chutes were long cylindrical tubes made of liquid protodermis held in place by a sheath of magnetic energy. The protodermis flowed through the chutes at a high rate of speed, carrying cargo and Matoran from place to place. Passengers were required to hold their breath while riding in a chute. Most chutes ran underground or underwater, but most of these were in poor repair and largely abandoned by the Matoran. These chutes were used by both Rahi and Visorak to reach the city. Chutes ran in preset direction. Attempting to change that direction could cause severe damage to the system. Kongu was forced by ex-Toa of Air Nidhiki to reverse the flow of a chute in an effort to capture the Toa Metru.

  • Air Vehicles - Air transport is used only for cargo in Metru Nui. Huge vessels float through the skies, carrying Rahi to Onu-Metru, solid protodermis blocks and tools to Po-Metru, and other bulk items to points around the city. Matoran Airships work thanks to a complicated system of Kanoka Levitation disks and increase weight disks. When the pulleys cause the Levitation disks to strike the framework, the craft rises. For landing, a different set of pulleys causes the increase weight disks to strike and the ship goes down. It can take years for a Le-Matoran to master the system and so pilots are highly respected.

  • Ground Vehicles - The two major types of land vehicle in Metru Nui are Ussal carts and Vahki transports. Ussal carts are wagons pulled by tame Rahi called Ussal crabs. Although they sometimes carry passengers, these carts are normally used to transport cargo. Vahki transports are much larger vehicles, which are used to ferry large numbers of Vahki from one place to another. Kanoka disks of speed are built into the structure so that the transport can move swiftly. Motive power is provided by insectoid like legs on both sides of the vehicle. Le-Matoran have been experimenting with the notion of replacing disk power with energy given off by living creatures, but they have not succeeded in making this work.

Protodermis

The most important substance in the BIONICLE universe. Protodermis can exist in solid, liquid, and gaseous form, and virtually everything known to the Matoran is made of it. This includes Toa Armour and organic tissue, buildings, tools, Kanoka Disks, Kanohi Masks, and even the silver sea that surrounds Metru Nui.

Solid protodermis can be mined in both Onu-Metru on Metru Nui and Onu-Koro on Mata Nui. All buildings, statues, and other structures on both islands were made from solid protodermis. Liquid protodermis, such as makes up the Metru Nui ocean, must be purified before being used to create items.

No significant sources of liquid protodermis existed on Mata Nui. Due to the fact that liquid protodermis took the place of water for the Metru Nui Matoran, it was dubbed "the stuff of life".

The third and rarest, form of protodermis is Energised Protodermis.

Origin of Protodermis

Protodermis is a silver substance directly poured and initially flooded into singular portions of liquids. Poured over into the wide, open-spread outskirts of the Matoran Universe below-ground. Internally pooled; and directly flooded into the robot's internal dome floors; as the entire vast area of seas; created and composed of silver liquids.

Directly pooled and initially exerted by the Great Beings. Alongside the aid of their cosmic powers; as well as their strange, bizarre, and overtly innocent ethics; over their sheer passion (and sheer innocence) for creativity and child-like hobby. As well as their humane compassion; regardless of their life-giving power, vast scientific knowledge, and their unusual nature as so-called "scientists". However, it was also intended to preserve the inorganic circulations of the Great Spirit himself; as well as an extension of a man-made ocean; explicate wealth to the Matoran and other species; and direct life forces to Mata Nui's living system and health.

Energised protodermis was originated on Spherus Magna, the home world of the Great Beings, as well as the source of the planet's core. When the planet imploded apart and simultaneously remained there as floating chunks and fragments across space, the substance of Energised Protodermis drifted into the void within the fragments of the planet. Therefore turning itself into singular moons in the due process. Quickly reforming the fragments of the former planet, across the extended voids of space. Forcibly due, to its internalised and bonded substance; into fully remoulded moons and planets. Alongside inhabitants living there during its quick and precise process; whom survived the implosion shortly thereafter.

  • Bara Magna -  Desert moon and former desert region on Spherus Magna

  • Bota Magna - Jungle moon and former Jungle region on Spherus Magna

  • Aqua Magna - reborn ocean moon and former area of oceans on Spherus Magna. Native home world to the islands of Mata Nui and Voya Nui.

However, Protodermis was partially drained on Spherus Magna before the implosion of the planet eventually took place. And then pooling the protodermis substances into the Matoran Universe thereafter. As man-made oceans: directly poured and openly preserved for its native and diverse creatures. As well as off-world inhabitants from below. And, as newly created outskirts of ocean waves, canals, and localise rivers and lakes. Singly extracted and directly composed, in non-energised liquids below-ground. As well as a concurrent creation of sea life below water; preserved for all living creations of Aqua beasts and sea creature types of Rahi.

Processing Solid Materials of Protodermis

  • Protodermis Purification - A process performed in Ga-Metru on Metru Nui to remove impurities from liquid protodermis so that it could be used in the making of Kanoka Disks. Liquid Protodermis was drawn from the sea into the Great Temple. Here a special group of Ga-Matoran waited to begin purification work. While some read ancient passages calling on the Great Spirit Mata Nui for aid and protection, others supervised the rapid heating and cooling needed to cleanse the liquid. Once this was done, the liquid protodermis lost its silver colouring and become a clear fluid with a bluish tinge.

other islands and regions of the Matoran Universe

  • Island city of Metru Nui - Despite similarities in shape to the larger island of Mata Nui above ground, Metru Nui's island below ground is much smaller; and located within the interior of Mata Nui's Robot head, as well as the entire city and central brain that Mata Nui controls.

  • Island of Artidax -  Volcanic island and western chain of the islands in the Matoran Universe.

  • Keetongu's island - Keetongu's homeland and his species. Alongside those whom ride on the Tahtorak as their Rahi steeds.

  • Island of Stelt - Homeland of Sidorak, Krekka, and their species.

  • Northern Continent - Large Northern land formerly inhabited by Toa Krakua, former Toa of Air Nidhiki, and Ko-Matoran Mazeka. Located south of Metru Nui alongside the south east region of the Tren Krom Peninsula.

  • Southern Continent - Large continent and surface ground in the MU; leading into Karda Nui below ground through deeper tunnels and caves underneath. Also inhabited by the Ba-Matoran, a small village above ground; and a Matoran species of the element of Gravity.

  • Southern Islands - Island chains down south; home to various Rahi and other Sapient Species. But very few ever settled there. And was neither explored by visitors of Matoran. Very few of the Southern Islands were under rule by the Barraki. Former warlords and kings of the League of Six Kingdoms. The Southern islands are also home to many species of the Barraki:  Axopakar - Carapar's species; Ihaugafe - Mantax's species; Ihidauri - Pridak's species; Layamat - Kalmah's species; Manidi - Takadox's species; and the Ursare - Ehlek's species.

  • Island of Visorak - An unnamed island created by the Great Beings among countless many in the MU. Homeland of the Order of Mata Nui's agent named Tobduk, and his species. The Visorak were also created there by the Makuta named Chirox. And later destroyed Tobuk's village and  conquered their land.

  • Island of Nynrah - An island of crafters in the Matoran Universe and homeland of the Fe-Matoran. A Matoran village and species of the element of Iron.

Creation of the Voya Nui Island

The Southern Continent was once a singular land with the island of Voya Nui resting in the very centre of the mainland. Before it rapidly broke off in-land between the two areas of the region; and jutted upwards into the ocean surfaces of Aqua Magna from above. Becoming a floating island on its own. Whilst after punching a hole through the vast roof of the dome and into Mata Nui's mechanical chest before reaching into the shores of the planet.

For many centuries, Voya Nui was once a floating, oval-shaped island. Due to the cooling lava made by the volcano otherwise known as Mount Valmai. Henceforth creating a new landmass. The Matoran then built a village upon it which they named it as Mahri Nui. However, the land was unstable. Causing half of the island to eventually break off from Voya Nui and sink into the ocean. Thus becoming a U-shaped island.

Island of Mata Nui

Creation of the Mata Nui Island

When Mata Nui crash landed onto the ocean's surface of Aqua Magna, direct network systems technologically programmed; and systematically built and constructed - in pouring and mixing smaller substances of Energised protodermis - has somehow malfunctioned Mata Nui's artificial camouflage system. Causing a massive spillage of energised protodermis into the waters of the planet. Covering his entire body under a newly formed island of plant-life and climate regions above surface.

Despite the myths and legends surrounding Mata Nui, he was in fact a gigantic robot world and an armoured space vessel housing the Matoran Universe. An obtained, underground alien world and a flying space craft created and simultaneously built by the Great Beings. Housing an internal system of movable domes; alongside silver and wet ocean pools, dry land regions, and underground islands underneath them. Whilst separated and interconnected with internal sea gates as entrances and exits to those areas from within; in his entire movable robot form.

The Matoran Universe. Housed within the Giant Robot whilst gravity-bending the internal structure of movable domes; obtaining islands, oceans, dry land areas (continents), and an underground cave world (Karda Nui) below-ground.

Mata Nui the Great Spirit Robot

Regardless of the colossal size of the robot, the vast mechanics and interior of the Mata Nui Robot was also built from the inside and all around it, with impermanent powers through Gravity, Space, and Time woven together in order to suppress the spatial proportions of the entire robot from within. Whilst retaining the standard form of a giant robot itself, from the outside. Therefore giving the robot a movable ability to manoeuvre with his physical body. Whilst simultaneously gravity-bending with the celestial domes in order to carry the islands and the dry land areas from within. This was done so, when the Great Beings envisioned the Matoran Universe in Mata Nui's mechanical body with their scientific nature and vast creativity. As well as their use of strange, cosmic-levelled powers over craft-work and engineering.

The consciousness of Mata Nui resides far beneath the surface of Metru Nui's coliseum - known as The Core Processor. A large network of mechanics that served as the "central brain" of the Great Spirit Robot. Installed and technologically programmed into; as his artificial intelligence and core being. Whereas his mind and spirit, created and intertwined with cosmic-powered energies and magical components made from their own abilities. Thereby embedded into the circuit boards as well as Mata Nui's artificial being. Situated beneath surface ground and below surface on the Metru Nui island. As well as allowing Mata Nui's mind and spirit; to remove himself from the internal machinery as well as returning to it after being revived.

The Kanohi Hau, a mask that symbolises Mata Nui, was chosen by the Great Beings as a reminder to the sentient Matoran creatures; as well as an aspired motivation in playing their unknowable but mundane roles that will affectively play out; in the enormous grand scheme of restoring a dead world.

Alongside Mata Nui, however, are two Glatorian guards placed in suspended animation for a brief time. To wake up to monitor and maintain the machinery of the robot in their aide whilst Mata Nui - the Core Being of the Great Spirit Robot - safeguards the universe as its obscure caretaker. However, the Glatorian pilots and Mata Nui serve each other as employed guardians of the Great Spirit Robot.

During Mata Nui's subsequent programming and reign as the designated "Great Spirit", he performs his original purposes alongside the Glatorian's aide through various missions and inadvertent tasks at hand. In an order to restore the remnants of an entire fallen world - otherwise known as Spherus Magna. A former planet inhabited by the Great Beings. By simply exploring and learning of other worlds and alien cultures beforehand in order to resolve the crisis and in restoring a now dead planet. With his key database and flight powers in his disposal, and under the aid of the Red Star's space engine whilst piloting its armoured body and space vessel across the external voids of the external universe. Before finally acknowledging what was needed to do in order to restore the planet - now separated and forcibly apart as singular moons.

During his awakening, however, Mata Nui provided the Matoran Universe with light, gravity, heat, and other essential forces of nature, as the Matoran would labour as unknowingly inside his body to continue his existence.

The Matoran Universe under Mata Nui's reign was simultaneous and predicatively serene; until the occurrence of the Great Cataclysm. Affecting the obtaining infrastructures of the Matoran Universe, due to Mata Nui's body crash-landing into the vast seas of Aqua Magna. Causing deaths to the Glatorian pilots.

However, only a Great Being can remove Mata Nui from his direct control over the universe. By simply removing him without key knowledge nor basic precaution, whereas Mata Nui himself, remains inside the mask as his own separate being. The mask in design and in shape, however, also slightly differs from the ordinary Hau. Regardless of their choice of symbolism as well as its brief representation for the Great Spirit.

However, when separated from his machinery and robot form, Mata Nui can build a body for himself as well as the mask. As he did so and similarly with the Ignika; during his exile on Bara Magna.

During the early stages of creating the Matoran Universe, the Great Beings had created two biomechanical brothers - Artakha and Karzahni. They were given a domain to rule over and therefore challenged them later on to put their skills to the test in winning the coveted Mask of Creation. Artakha won the right to wear this mask after he physically fought for it against his brother, Karzahni. Regardless however, the Great Beings did not give Artakha the mask in person. Instead, the Mask itself came to him after his worthy display of his effort. After winning the Mask of Creation, Artakha used it many times to aid him in the designing of his creations. As Artakha wore and constantly used the Mask of Creation for over 100,000 years, he mastered the immense amount of willpower and its mental ability to effectively use it.

The Toa, Turaga, and the Matoran species that lived inside Mata Nui's body were designed and programmed to only respect and acknowledge Mata Nui as one of their revered figureheads. Or as of their main protector of the universe besides Toa and Makuta species. As well as an omen of serenity and good faith between them as an aspired work culture. The Three Virtues, a quintessential gift supposedly granted by Mata Nui to the Matoran, gave them a purpose for their way of life and kept them prosperous. These principles - Unity, Duty, and Destiny were the centre of everyday Matoran life as well as a symbol of hope for all Matoran and other species.

The symbol of The Three Virtues was created and founded upon by the Great Beings. A drawn image of shapes resembling their home world being destroyed and separated from as three circular forms in different sizes with two, double curved and separated rims from both opposite sides and angles. A female Great Being had predicted this, however, in moments before the implosion of their home world. Due to her gifted powers in seeing abrupt visions of the aftermath. They then use this to aspire their sentient-programmed Matoran workers as well as the Great Beings participating in an order of helping Mata Nui.

However, when the Mata Nui Robot has launched, a devious Great Being secretly observed the Matoran Universe as a disguised Po-Matoran; and altered the genetic AI programming to all its species (Toa, Turaga, Matoran, Makuta, Skakdi, Vortixx, Steltians, Barraki, etc). Thereby making the inhabitants of the Great Spirit Robot and the Matoran Species turn highly intelligent as well as overdeveloping their nanotechnology; into an overtly over-sophisticated society and work culture. As well as the basis of their artificial intelligence.

Due to the tampering, Mata Nui was eventually over-venerated by the Sapient-turned Matoran; as their only and centralised figurehead. Oddly more so than the Great Beings to others; but not as a plural god figure. Thus making the Makuta species turn extremely jealous and completely forgotten by all the known species of the universe. As well as the Makuta's merit and value in serving Mata Nui's purpose as well as their dutiful pledge and their protection for all the Matoran. Eventually, they began building their grand scheme in overthrowing Mata Nui's power and responsibility.

As Sapient-turned Matoran species, they eventually use stone tablets as their secondary method of materials for their Matoran Language writing.

During the construction of the Mata Nui robot, the Matoran laboured in darkness whilst aided by the efforts of the Great Beings. Unknowingly building a vast alien world that will be theirs in their return as well as a reward for their efforts; situating beneath ground and within; as the interior of the Great Spirit Robot. The Great Beings themselves has also laid the foundations of Metru Nui - the Core Processor below and the entire island above ground. They then created the Kanohi Ignika, a Mask of Life that can heal Mata Nui's life-force if necessary. The Great Beings had also provided Artakha himself with supplies needed to create the Toa Mata, six special species of Toa heroes whose destiny was a failsafe against the possibility of Mata Nui ever falling into a comatose state.

Despite all this, the Great Beings wanted to give them this world; as a primary yet psychological means of saving their own in the long run. As well as a sentient work culture for the Matoran creatures. As a means of operating with Mata Nui, as well as Matoran effectively playing their role and unknowingly; in the enormous grand scheme of saving their creators' home world.

Meanwhile in Karda Nui, the Energy Storms, which occurred as long as Mata Nui was awake, gave power to him. Whereas the Matoran living there, resort to their natural homes in safety.

Karda Nui is an underground region. A cave world created into Mata Nui's celestial chest region and forcibly secured into another movable dome. Inter-connected and below surface ground; within another movable dome structure. Karda Nui was also known as the heart of the Great Spirit as well as the Universe Core, and is located beneath the mainland area (the Southern Continent and Voya Nui) and its vast dome structure above it.

The Universe Core was also located a bit deeper into the robot than the rest of the Matoran Universe.

Protected in powerful shields, Karda Nui's barriers were strong enough to hold back the power of the Staff of Artakha, and stop the Toa Nuva from accessing their Suva, thus preventing them from switching masks.

Mata Nui was given several tasks by the Great Beings, such as the observation of other worlds. He was able to do this by the Red Star, another of the Great Beings' creations. An alien space station and detached engine which assisted him in travelling between planets, as well as containing creatures called Kestora; to repair any deceased inhabitants, and then send them back to work in Mata Nui's mechanical and robot body; housing and obtaining the confines of the Matoran Universe. However, the latter function did not work properly; while beings were sent there, they did not return.

Powers of the Great Spirit Robot

While controlling the Great Spirit Robot, Mata Nui possessed several abilities. It possessed the ability to fly, fire blasts of energy from its palms, and manipulate gravity.

makuta and Barraki

Makuta and Barraki

Shortly after his awakening, Mata Nui saw fit to create a new species, the Makuta. Using a pool of Antidermis in the Southern Islands, he created one hundred Makuta. These Makuta formed the Brotherhood of Makuta, who became known as the brothers of Mata Nui and carried out his will of creating bio-mechanical Rahi and plantlife to populate his universe.

Five thousand years later, he created six species, choosing one of each to withhold order. These six became warlords known as the Barraki and allied into the League of Six Kingdoms. However, the Barraki were not entirely loyal to Mata Nui. By 15,000 years later, they had conquered most of the known Matoran Universe, and sought the overthrow of Mata Nui himself. This action prompted the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Toa to muster an army under Makuta Teridax and capture the Barraki and end the League's rule.

500 years later, a Matoran dispute arose in Metru Nui, escalating to the Matoran Civil War. With the loss of workers, this created dire results for Mata Nui. Even when Teridax ended the conflict, Mata Nui's life was endangered. Therefore, Toa Jovan and his team of Toa were dispatched to the Southern Continent to recover the Kanohi Ignika. They took the mask underground to Karda Nui and, with a teammate's "sacrifice", healed Mata Nui.

the brotherhood's betrayal

The Brotherhood's Betrayal

After Mata Nui had accomplished his mission, and was returning to the now-shattered Spherus Magna,  Makuta Teridax had begun to formulate a dark plan, a coup to overthrow the Great Spirit. The idea stemmed from an idea Teridax had following the Barraki's defeat, believing the League could not be the rulers of the Matoran Universe, but surely the Makuta could. After the Metru Nui Civil War, many Makuta had similar beliefs, as Makuta Miserix assigned regions for the Makuta to watch over. All over, the species became aware of complete devotion, veneration, and love for the Great Spirit, and yet none for the Makuta, despite all they had done for them.

This spawned jealousy, hatred, and anger toward him, until all the Makuta wanted to see was the Great Spirit "humbled", as Teridax described once. Therefore, when Makuta Mutran had returned from a mission to investigate Tren Krom, he informed Teridax of information such as Mata Nui's actual form and characteristics, who used the information to overthrow Miserix, and fill the Great Spirit with a virus to make him fall into a deep coma.

However, Mata Nui foretold the coming attack, and manipulated events to make sure things could be made right. When new Toa Metru were about to be chosen by Toa Lhikan shortly before the Cataclysm, Makuta wished to influence the choices to his advantage. Knowing this, Mata Nui and his Order falsified prophesies regarding the identities of the new Toa. Teridax believed these prophesies, and influenced Lhikan to choose others to become the new Toa. But as these "others" were fake to begin with, the ones that Teridax influenced Lhikan to choose were in fact the true destined Toa Metru.

After enslaving Metru Nui's Matoran, Teridax cast the Virus on Mata Nui, causing him to crash on Aqua Magna (which was formerly part of Spherus Magna until The Shattering) and sink to the bottom of the ocean. The resulting crash caused many islands of the Matoran Universe to float to the surface of the planet. Many beings were killed in the cataclysm. The Toa Metru managed to retrieve the Matoran from Metru Nui, and later retreated to an island right above the city, which they named after the Great Spirit.

ignition

Ignition

More than 1,000 years later, Metru Nui's inhabitants returned, only to discover that Mata Nui was not only asleep, but dying. The Toa Nuva were then sent to Voya Nui to find the Ignika, Mask of Life, that could save Mata Nui's life. Six Matoran followed them determined to help, and were transformed into the Toa Inika. The Toa Inika got the mask, after several struggles against rogue Skakdi ex-Dark Hunters calling themselves Piraka, but it immediately flew away and plunged into the sea, heading for the undersea city of Mahri Nui that rested on top of the Pit, which it considered the most damaged place in the universe.

The Barraki went after it as soon as they learned of it, and the waters of the Pit were slowly destroying it. The Toa Inika pursued it down to Mahri Nui through the stone cord linking Mahri Nui and Voya Nui. They encountered a tribe of Zyglak, and a giant venom eel cracked the cord and attacked them.

However, they became Toa Mahri, transformed by the Ignika. They had from that point around 24 hours to heal Mata Nui before he died, and, after that, it would only be a matter of days before life in the universe ceased to exist. Unfortunately, they failed, and shortly after the Toa Mahri recovered the Ignika and cut the Stone Cord in preparation for Mata Nui's awakening, he died, causing the Mask of Life to go dark (it did not, however, lose its powers--the darkness was purely symbolic). The universe then slowly began to die, but the Toa Mahri did not give up. After falling into Karda Nui, Matoro put on the Ignika. He died, and the Ignika used his energies to resurrect Mata Nui, saving the universe. However, he remained asleep and began having terrible nightmares.

After arriving in Karda Nui, the Toa Nuva discovered that there were six fragments of a keystone that told how to awaken Mata Nui. From the first three stones they acquired, they learned that the secret to reviving the Great Spirit was in the Swamp of Secrets.

The Toa Nuva and the newly created "Toa" Ignika eventually found the Codrex, the structure which powered the energy storms and the Toa Mata originated. It was Gali who told the Ignika that, by using the Ignika, they would be able to awaken Mata Nui much faster than the Codrex could. "Toa" Ignika eventually accepted the consequences and sacrificed his body to revive Mata Nui, so it could be a hero like Matoro.

However, this great victory was not to last. Mata Nui's central hive-mind was invaded by Teridax at the exact moment when the Ignika revived him, and he took over the robot while Mata Nui was recovering. He then banished his spirit into the Ignika, and the Ignika from the universe after it was used to awaken him.

the red star

the Red star

The Red Star was an enigmatic celestial object that was located in the skies of Mata Nui and Voya Nui. It contained the mechanism that allowed the Great Spirit Robot to travel from planet to planet. The Star also served as a means of resurrecting the deceased beings in the Matoran Universe. Their bodies were teleported to the Red Star, where their bodies were either repaired or their consciousness were transplanted into a new body. However, this ability had limitations: The being needed to be within the Matoran Universe as well as inside the Great Spirit Robot. And there had to be enough left of the deceased's mind and body to be salvaged; in other words, any beings who died on the island of Mata Nui or left few solid remains could not be revived, and thus remained dead permanently.

The Red Star also served as a means for Matoran to determine the future - if the position of the Red Star in a constellation in the sky matched one of the prophecy carvings in the base of the Great Telescope, that prophecy was about to come to fruition.

History

The Red Star was created by the Great Beings after they had created Mata Nui to help the Great Spirit Robot transport itself off planets. The Great Beings had also placed biomechanical creatures known as the Kestora inside of the star.

The Star was also used to revive deceased inhabitants of the Matoran Universe, warping them to the inside to repair them if enough remained of the deceased and then teleporting them back after repairing them.

However, The Red Star is also an engine space station used by the Great Spirit Robot. Designed to help him escape the orbit of a planet. This is done so by attaching the Red Star to Mata Nui's back and then providing him enough power to exit the planet's orbit. In addition, the Star was also involved in efforts to sustain the Matoran Universe that is living inside Mata Nui's robot body. The Star did not only have the abilities to revive dead beings but as a fail-safe to transform a group of Matoran into a team of new Toa.

The Star's ability to revive, however, was limited by certain requirements:

  • It could only revive beings composed of Protodermis. It was for this reason that the Makuta species were unable to be revived since they are beings made of Antidermis. However, the Great Beings has charged Mata Nui to create the Makuta species with the use of his own requirements. Causing a partially mistaken method for not allowing the Makuta to be teleported and revived on the Star.

  • If the body or mind of the being was broken beyond repair, then they would not meet the criteria in order to get revived; therefore being outside the Matoran universe.

The Red Star also contained devices that can supply energy to the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe; in order to prevent their starvation.

Once the Great Cataclysm occurred, Mata Nui crash landed into the seas of Aqua Magna and then formed itself into a newly-made island. Covering his entire face above as camouflage. The island that covered the entire robot, however, would become a new home for Matoran refugees migrating from Metru Nui. And therefore named the island "Mata Nui" after the Great Spirit Robot himself. Since the island of Mata Nui was located on Aqua Magna above ground, the Red Star could be seen in orbit above the moons of Bara Magna and Bota Magna.

The villages on Mata Nui knew very little of this mysterious alien craft. But they were able to use this to form constellations, in order to create prophecies for telling future events. One such example was a prophecy depicting the arrival of the Toa Mata on the island of Mata Nui.

Similar to the Great Spirit Robot, the Red Star was also made from solid protodermis. A substance synthesised from energised protodermis by the Great Beings on Spherus Magna. From his time onboard the Star, Toa Pohatu described its interior as a combination of metal bands and organic tissue that was cold to the touch. The Star also uses a power source with similar capabilities to the Mata Nui Robot and also contained energised protodermis. The Star was also home to many laboratories and old machinery.

After teleporting a Matoran named Gaardus, back to the Matoran Universe after reviving him, however, the Red Star's teleportation systems broke down; the deceased could still be teleported onto the Red Star but could not leave hereafter. Due to the damage of the teleportation.

Outside the Matoran Universe, lightning sent from the Red Star was also responsible for the transformation of the Toa Inika. When Jaller and the Matoran had reached the shores of Voya Nui in search of the Toa Nuva in their transport canisters.

One of the tasks on the list of preparations for Mata Nui's awakening was to record the Red Star's location. While looking through the Great Telescope on Mata Nui with her Akaku Nuva, Gali Nuva shockingly noticed that there is life inside the star.

The Kestora

The Kestora were a race of sentient purple and black beings which resided in the Red Star and in the City of Silver Pocket Dimension.

The Kestora were not as advanced as the Matoran species. And were limited by the parameters of their AI's original genetic programming. Lacking individuality as well as a concept of morality, the Kestora were focused solely on their original purpose of returning beings being revived on the Star. And they were determined to achieve this at all costs, even at the cost of the lives of others. They had no sense of compassion nor empathy, and were not above dissecting their revived charges if it could enable them to do their jobs.

Kestora species

The Great Telescope

The Great Telescope was deployed by Mata Nui, being Mata Nui's camouflage system whenever he lands, with its purpose being to track the Red Star. When Mata Nui fell asleep and crashed into Aqua Magna, and formed the island of Mata Nui due to a malfunction, the Telescope was deployed during the process over the Ta-Wahi Beach.

Unlike most of the island, the Great Telescope was not cleansed by the Bohrok, as it was a pre-existing part of Mata Nui. When Mata Nui awoke from his slumber, destroying the island of Mata Nui along the way, the Telescope was able to retract back into Mata Nui's face.

Functionality

Around the telescope's base are several pictures. These pictures represent constellations found in the night sky, and markings that show prophecies. Each picture features a red star. This is the Red Star sometimes found in the sky. When the Red Star is lined up correctly, it will look like one of the pictures on the base of the telescope. When this happens, one of the prophecies is about to come true.

Planets outside the Matoran Universe

Bota Magna

Bota Magna

Bota Magna, or the Great Jungle, was originally a forest region of Spherus Magna, and after The Shattering became a moon of Bara Magna. Later, Mata Nui returned it to its original position on Spherus Magna.

Bota Magna was originally the name of a jungle on Spherus Magna. This jungle was home to the Jungle Tribe. There was also a mountain range in Bota Magna, which hosted the Rock Tribe. The Iron Tribe also lived here as well as the Earth Tribe. Also the Great Being who touched the Ignika was also imprisoned here in a cell for going insane. A tribe of Vorox, led by Kabrua, also ended up here after the Shattering. The conditions on Bota Magna kept them from regressing like the Bara Magna Vorox. They also built a city on the planet.

Due to the Core War the Shattering occurred, Bota Magna together with the Northern Frost broke loose from the rest of Spherus Magna, and formed a moon, which would later be known only as Bota Magna.

During Teridax's takeover of the Matoran Universe, a Great Being sensed Vezon with the Olmak. He then used his power of speaking between dimensions to contact Vezon. To try and free the Great Being, Vezon recruited Miserix, Axonn, Brutaka, Artakha, Lewa, Helryx, Tuyet, Kapura, and Hafu, beings that were shot out of space by Teridax (with the exception of Lewa, who went out on purpose).

Later, during the final battle on Bara Magna, a Gravity blast from Teridax struck the moon and pulled it back towards Bara Magna. Along with the moon of Aqua Magna, Bota Magna rejoined Bara Magna to construct Spherus Magna. Giant bio-mechanical creatures created by the Great Beings watched as areas where trees didn't grow anymore, grew again.

bara Magna

Bara Magna

Bara Magna, a desert planet, was a former chunk of Spherus Magna, located in Solis Magna System. Mata Nui later reformed Bara Magna, Bota Magna, and Aqua Magna back into Spherus Magna.

Bara Magna was once a section of Spherus Magna, and held an advanced civilisation. Many of the warriors on the planet were enlisted to fight in the Core War over the Energised Protodermis discovered elsewhere on the planet. During the war, the planet shattered, and the largest fragment was Bara Magna. The majority of the population were also on Bara Magna at the time, though a minority were trapped on the moons.

The members of the Rock Tribe, which had previously inhabited a different area on the planet, were cut off from their home as a result of the disaster. The Skrall attempted to establish a camp near the Black Spike Mountains, but encountered the violent shapeshifters which they dubbed Baterra, who killed many of their number.

The Sand Tribe, already a reclusive tribe, gradually devolved into savages as a reaction to the Shattering. It also worsened the availability of the scarce resources of the planet, and helped create a need for a new planet-wide social system. The Agori, organised into tribes, began hiring Glatorian to fight in arenas for resources. The Skrall, commanded by their only remaining leader, Tuma, migrated south, and into the previously uninhabited city of Roxtus at the base of the Black Spike Mountains. Tuma, observing the Agori social system, began to participate in it as well, as part of his newly formulated plan of global domination.

Bara Magna was inhabited by several sapient species including the Agori, the Glatorian, the Skrall, the Bone Hunters, the Zesk, and the Vorox. Bara Magna was also inhabited by dangerous creatures, typically living in desert regions, and other animals used as transports, including the Sand Stalkers and Rock Steeds.

After the Shattering, several experienced warriors, including CertavusTarix and Ackar, developed a new system. To prevent wars, two Glatorian, each one representing a tribe, would fight in an arena when there was a conflict. The winner's tribe would obtain the resource, area, or whatever the conflict concerned, while the loser's tribe would receive nothing.

After Teridax was killed the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe migrated there.

aqua Magna

aqua Magna

Aqua Magna, also known as the Endless Ocean Planet or the Great Sea, was the planet which Mata Nui crash-landed on as a result of the Great Cataclysm and a moon of Bara Magna.

When the Great Spirit, Mata Nui, completed his mission, he was returning to Bara Magna when he fell into a coma because of a virus which the Brotherhood of Makuta had infected him with, and "crashed" on Aqua Magna. In the impact, part of the Mainland inside the Matoran Universe broke loose, punched out of Mata Nui's chest and subsequently rose up onto the surface of Aqua Magna, forming an island which was later known as Voya Nui. After crash-landing, many islands of the Matoran Universe rose to the surface. Mata Nui's camouflage system also formed an island over his head, an island which was later known as the island of Mata Nui.

After the Toa Mahri destroyed the Stone Cord, Voya Nui sank back to its original position, destroying the area known as Mahri Nui in the process.

When the Toa Nuva awoke the Great Spirit, the Matoran Universe was reformed. Makuta Teridax located and possessed Mata Nui's "brain", a bank of machinery far beneath the surface of Metru Nui. When Teridax arose as the new Great Spirit on Aqua Magna, the Island of Mata Nui broke apart, destroying the landmass on the surface of the planet.

As Mata Nui, now controlling a prototype of his body, began to reform Spherus Magna, Makuta left for Bara Magna to kill the great spirit. During their battle on that planet, Teridax threatened to destroy Bara Magna with a blast of gravity power. However, Mata Nui redirected this blast into space, striking Aqua Magna and Bota Magna. This blast caused them to fly back toward Bara Magna. Right before the moon rejoined with Bara Magna, Mata Nui pushed Teridax, causing a chunk of Aqua Magna to smash the Great Spirit Robot's head, killing the Makuta (Teridax) once and for all. Aqua Magna and Bota Magna then fell back into their respective locations on Bara Magna.

Locations and Features outside and within Mahri Nui:

The Throne of Vision

Chamber within the village of Mahri Nui; where Matoran relate memories of their former lives on the surface from above.

The Sanctuary

Where artefacts drift down and kept by the Mahri Nui Matoran.

The Fortress

Where Matoran experiment on Airweed and air bubbles and a memorial for those whom fell victim to sea predators.

The Fields of Air

Located on the outskirts of Mahri Nui, this area teems with plants dubbed "airweed" by the Matoran. Each plant produces bubbles of air that can be merged together to form larger bubbles. The Matoran use Rahi called Hydruka to harvest the air. This is used to create large bubbles around the buildings of Mahri Nui as well as smaller, personal air bubbles for Matoran who venture outside the city.

The Pillars of Salt

Mountains that formed over the centuries from salt deposits in the water. This area is a preferred hunting ground of Takea sharks and so has not been extensively explored by the Matoran.

Octo Cave

A frequent stopping place of the Barraki named Kalmah, this cavern is the source of the sea squid that have plagued the Matoran for so long.

Ehlek's Fortress

A fortress built by the green Barraki named Ehlek beneath the waters of Voya Nui and Aqua Magna; later destroyed by the landmass of Mahri Nui during the Great Cataclysm.

island of voya nui

Voya Nui is a harsh and brutal land, particularly in recent years. Those Matoran forced to make a life here have had to struggle each day simply to survive. This was not an accident. By being as inhospitable as possible, the island has discouraged casual visitors and those chasing its secret. Surrounding the U-shaped coastline of Voya Nui is a ring of ice. Moving farther inland, a traveller encounters "the green belt", a circular band of lush jungle whose origin remains a mystery to the Matoran. Once past the green, the land turns rocky and barren. Dominating the center of the island is an active volcano, Mount Valmai. What few in the known universe know is that the true importance of Voya Nui can be found only below-ground. A hidden entrance leads to 777-step staircase, which in turn leads to the chamber that holds the Mask of Life. Many guardians and challenges were placed here to prevent the mask from being taken by those with evil intent.

For thousands of years, no one dared descend the stairs, until in recent days a team of Piraka and a team of six Toa (Toa Inika) made the journey. Amazingly, both groups survived the experience. Voya Nui was once home to two villages, one named simply Voya Nui and the second Mahri Nui. The land that held the latter broke off from the rest of the island and sank beneath the sea.

History

For most of its existence, Voya Nui was part of a much larger continent. Then the Great Cataclysm came, the same quake that wrecked the city of Metru Nui. The Voya Nui landmass broke off of its home continent and rocketed upward until it reached the point where it now floats (sea surface of Aqua Magna), well to the north of its starting point.

In the process, its ruler, Turaga Jovan (former Toa of Magnetism), and many Matoran were killed. One would have expected the island to continue to float away on the waves, but that did not happen. Instead, molten protodermis oozing from its core cooled instantly in the ocean waters, forming a labyrinthine chain of solid rock that extended from Voya Nui down below the surface and held it in place. Now leaderless, the Matoran nevertheless adjusted in time to their new environment. The landmass of Voya Nui increased over the years, until there was room to build a coastal city, christened Mahri Nui.

Then a second disaster struck- Mahri Nui sank beneath the sea, taking all of its residents with it. To this day, the Matoran of Voya Nui throw tools and other artefacts into the water at that spot as a memorial to their lost friends.

After that tragedy, life remained peaceful for many millennia. The Matoran dealt with drought, volcanic eruptions, and other natural disasters, scraping out a living from the rocky earth. Until very recently, none were aware that they shared the island with two members of the Order of Mata Nui, Axonn and Brutaka.

These two had been assigned there ages ago to keep watch over the entryway to the Mask of Life's hiding place.

The situation began to unravel in the last month. First a Skakdi named Vezon, then six others - Zaktan, Avak, Reidak, Hakann, Vezok, Thok, and Avak - known as Skakdi-origin ex-Dark Hunters "Piraka" invaded the island in search of the Mask of Life.

They enslaved the matoran, battled two teams of Toa (the Toa Nuva and the Toa Inika), and came within inches of claiming the mask before finally being frustrated in their efforts. But they were not captured and continue to seek the mask, although their physical forms have been affected by mutagenic seawater. It is doubtful even they know just what changes await them.

In the aftermath of this struggle, the Toa Inika found, and lost, the mask and are now on their way to Mahri Nui in pursuit of it. Their fellow heroes, the Toa Nuva, have departed the island on a mission of their own. Brutaka has been exiled, leaving only Axonn and the Matoran on the island.

How much longer they remain there will depend on what success the Toa Inika find in the ocean depths.

Locations and Regions on Voya Nui:

Piraka Stronghold

A mighty Fortress built by Matoran labor. This was the headquarters of the Piraka on Voya Nui and housed the crystal vat in which Teridax's energy form lurked. The stronghold was badly damaged by battles with the Toa Nuva and Toa Inika.

Chamber of Life

A secret chamber beneath Mount Valmai, where the Mask of Life was kept hidden. It was guarded by Axonn, Brutaka, and Umbra (whom was appointed by the Great Beings to guard the mask). It could be reached by going through a hidden entrance in The Green Belt and descending a staircase with 777 stairs.

Nui Caves

A network of caverns located beneath the surface of Voya Nui. Axonn led the Matoran down here to keep them safe from harm before Voya Nui returned to its native continent. Nektann could also be found down here.

Desert of Sorrows

A vast, arid expanse near the center of Voya Nui. The Toa Nuva briefly fought the Matoran Resistance here, due to a case of mistaken identity. Gali Nuva was cured of temporary insanity while in the desert thanks to the help of Axonn.

Mount Valmai

An extremely active volcano, Mount Valmai is the highest peak on Voya Nui. The Chamber of Life, hiding place of the Mask of Life, rests beneath it. The Piraka once tried to empty the volcano of lava, believing the mask could be found that way.

The Green Belt

This strange forest encircled the island, its origin unknown. Some of the Piraka believed the Mask of Life could be found here, and that its power had made the plants grow. The secret entrance to the Chamber of Life could be found here.

Matoran Cliff Village

Dwelling place of the Voya Nui Matoran, this village was heavily defended and constructed like a fortress. It was originally intended to protect the residents from dangerous Rahi. It was the site of the Piraka's ambush of most of the island's population and was later destroyed.

Zone of Nightmares

A cavern found along the staircase leading to the Chamber of Life. Anyone entering it would see their worst fear brought to life. The Piraka faced Irnakk, a legendary monster of their species' mythology, and the Toa Inika were tricked into thinking they had killed the Toa Nuva here.

Piraka Outposts

Small guard stations located throughout the island, armed with robotic defence devices called Nektann. They were heavily armoured and able to reconstruct themselves. One outpost was destroyed by Toa Nuparu using his laser drill.

island of Daxia

Mountainous and beautiful, Daxia is a paradise. More importantly, it is a paradise that can be easily defended from behind the walls of a fortress. It is the first and largest Order of Mata Nui base. A stranger visiting Daxia would probably not agree that it is an attractive place to settle. With no sources of fresh water, ferocious wildlife, and blistering hot climate all year-round. But for those who get to know the island well, there are treasures to be found.

Tiny streams trickle down the mountains and turn into underground lakes. The high temperatures produce plant life not found anywhere else in the universe. And the local creatures primarily target each other, unless there is an intruder to the island upon whom to feast.

The island of Daxia has been the homeland of the Order since the beginning of time. It was here that the Toa Mata- Tahu, Gali, and others- first walked.

History

During creation of the Matoran Universe, individual beings realised that there was a need for an organisation. The Toa would be the public face of Mata Nui's will, serving and protecting the Matoran alongside the Makuta as well as earning their trust. However, the importance of maintaining that trust as heroes and protectors of the universe meant there would be some jobs where Toa could not do and some could know nothing about of their existence. The Order of Mata Nui was formed by a lone Toa of Water named Helryx. An independent faction as well as serving Mata Nui's direct will. Despite their overt similarities to Toa, the Order consisted of diverse warriors and species outside of Toa and Matoran around the universe, and therefore enacted in secrecy. However, a Toa of Sonics named Krakua and a Ko-Matoran surviver named Mazeka eventually joined the organisation thereafter.

The first recruits for the Order came from among the ranks of those whom oversaw the building of Karzahni and Artahka long before the coming of any Toa. Those founding members (including Helryx herself) chose Daxia as the site of the Order's fortress. And there, they built their base, stone by stone, without help from Matoran or any others within the universe.

In its time, the Order has acted only when it had to and when the Toa could not directly. The plans of the Dark Hunters, the League of Six Kingdoms, the Brotherhood of Makuta, and countless other criminal factions have been checked in part by their agents.

Over the millennia, the Order's fortress was guarded with unique weaponry and alien technology to defend Daxia.

The Order was eventually betrayed by one of their agents; named Brutaka. He and his teammate, Axonn, had been stationed on Voya Nui for many thousands of years and then somewhere, along the way, Brutaka lost his faith in Mata Nui and schemed to steal the Mask of Life with the Piraka. Axonn was forced into combat against his former friend and managed to defeat him. An agent named Botar was then dispatched from Daxia to escort the fallen Order member to the pit. A prison built by the Order for those whom commit theft, betrayal, or deemed beyond redemption.

The Order eventually revealed their existence and  became everlasting allies to Toa Nuva, Toa Mahri, and the members of the Matoran Resistence on Voya Nui.

Island of Daxia.png

island of Destral

Site of the first and largest Brotherhood of Makuta fortress, and their headquarters in the war against the Dark Hunters. The island's location changes all the time - it's believed the Brotherhood is using some version of a Kanohi Olmak, Mask of Dimensional Gates, to move it through dimensional gates. It is heavily defended by concealed weaponry and traps and the legions of Visorak, Rahkshi, and Exo-Toa. Beyond the fortress, Destral is a largely barren island and has no native inhabitants.

History

Once, this island was a symbol of justice, truth, and loyalty. But history has eventually blackened its name, alongside the sight of the barren plain and the harsh, forbidding fortress that rests upon it, is enough to sicken any honourable being.

Destral is the site of one of the largest of the Brotherhood's fortresses. It is the headquarters in their war with the Dark Hunters, as well as their continuing criminal acts against the universe as a whole. So impregnable is the fortress that even members of the Order shudder at the thought of trying to capture it. The Makuta were evil, brutal, and ruthless traitors to Mata Nui's cause and to everyone else within the universe.

The Brotherhood was established 100,000 years ago, within a matter of days during the formation of the Matoran Universe. Their task was a simple one: Using substances of energised protodermis as their tool to create numerous types of wildlife creatures and living beasts known as Rahi. In order to maintain the balance of the universe whilst carrying out the will of Mata Nui.

While the Makuta did not create Matoran, Toa, or other intelligent species into being, they were indeed responsible for the creation of countless breeds of Rahi.

As time passed, their excellent work led to their being given more responsibility. The Makuta became a smaller, but more powerful, security force for the Matoran Universe, supplementing the efforts of the Toa. When massive threats emerged, however, such as the rebellion of the League of Six Kingdoms, the Brotherhood has the authority to muster an army of Toa and other beings in response.

Later, the outbreak of the Matoran Civil War in Metru Nui led to the assignment of individual Brotherhood members; or Makuta; to many regions across the universe. Their duty: Monitor the environment, protect the Matoran, and provide support and guidance to the Toa while still carrying out their primary role in creating whatever was needed to keep the universe in order.

However, despite the partial majority of Rahi being potentially harmful and dangerous in many forms or shapes; to any novice inhabitant across the universe; the primary purpose of the Makuta was to create living things that would benefit and aid every being directly. As well as befriending them; and even taming them easily beforehand.

Six heroes known as Toa Hagah; led by Toa Norik; stole the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light, from the Makuta's fortress on Destral. Before eventually becoming Rahaga. Attacked by Roodaka's mutation spinner.

island of odina

Primary island of the Dark Hunters. Odina is located well away from any trade routes and its steep cliffs make it highly defensible. Its northern reaches are wild and barren, while the main feature of its southern side is the fortress of The Shadowed One, leader of the Dark Hunters. It is here that Dark Hunters are trained, housed, and given their missions. Another feature of note is "Nidhiki Beach". Named after the deceased ex-Toa who was transformed into a monstrous, insectlike being by Roodaka.

Odina is heavily defended and home to vicious Rahi like the Cliff Screecher.

History

Odina is most remarkable for its cliffs. They rise hundreds of feet in the air on every side of the island, huge monoliths of black stone that cut the island's interior off from the outside world. Only one pathway leads from the upper plateau down to the coast, emerged at a spot called Nidhiki Beach. It is so named there because it was on this strip of sand that the traitorous Toa Mangai of Air named Nidhiki was transformed into a monstrous insectoid being made by Roodaka's Rhotuka spinner with mutation powers. By order of The Shadowed One.

The other feature of significance on the island is the Dark Hunter fortress and training ground. Covering most of the southern half of the island, it is as close to impregnable as its builders could make it. Over time, even the Brotherhood of Makuta's strongholds have been invaded and robbed - this has never happened on Odina.

The secret of its buildings went to the grave with them, but it is known that the stone of the fortress's inner hallways has some unusual properties. Apparently, the entire configuration of the building can be changed by the Shadowed One's thoughts, allowing him to herd intruders wherever he wants them to go. The structure is also loaded with traps, dead ends (accent on dead), and prisons for those foolish enough to be caught and lucky enough to survive the experience.

The courtyard of the fortress serves as a training area where Dark Hunters are taught to kidnap, to steal, and to eliminate their enemies. There is no mock combat on Odina. All fights, even training exercises, are to the death, unless the Shadowed One wishes it otherwise.

The island of Odina was discovered by the Shadowed One and a being nicknamed "Ancient" (an operative spy and agent of the Order of Mata Nui), a fellow native of the Shadowed One's homeland. In the wake of a civil war there, the two had hit upon the idea of offering their services to others in return for profit or power.

From there, it was a short leap to the idea of hiring others to serve under them and take on missions, turning over any reward they received to the organisation.

Being more ambitious and determined, the Shadowed One eventually took over sole leadership of the organisation. But the Dark Hunters needed a secure base and a place to train new recruits. As Odina selected for their ideal base, the Shadowed One and Ancient promptly scared off or killed the native population and eventually made the island as their own.

Over the millennia, countless plans have been hatched on this island that resulted in acts of both great daring and great evil. Virtually every artefact of importance, from the Makoki stones to the Mask of Life, has at one time or another been possessed by or coveted by the Dark Hunters. At any time of the day or night, boats or airships can be seen coming and going from Odina, ferrying agents to and from their missions.

Only once in all that time has the security of Odina every truly been at risk.

After the Dark Hunters' defeat in their war with the Toa, the heroes could have chosen to force the location of the island from their prisoners. Instead, in an effort to retrieve Makoki stones (whose true importance they did not even know), the Toa made a deal with the Shadowed One that allowed the captured Dark Hunters return to their base.

No one on either side believed it would be the last confrontation between the two.

Today, Odina was the headquarters for the war against the Brotherhood. Although the Shadowed One is confident that his enemies will not attempt to storm his fortress, the leader of the Dark Hunters is not aware of the fact that there was a spy (Ancient) among the hunters.

The Xia native named Roodaka has been working for both sides, the Brotherhood and the Dark Hunters, in the conflict, and will sell out to the Dark Hunters if the price is right.

Island of Odina.png

karda nui

The core of the Matoran Universe, this is one of the most vital spots in all of the Great Beings' creation and the second to be constructed (following Metru Nui). It is a vast cavern of unimaginable size, traditionally barren except for the Codrex. For most of its existence, it has been the site of huge energy storms, and so not habitable. Prior to the coming of Mata Nui, the core was also home to Karda Nui Matoran.

The Toa Mata had also journeyed there and were housed in the Codrex for 100,000 years awaiting their call to action. Most recently, it has been the site of a war between the Toa Nuva and the Brotherhood of Makuta.

History

During creation of the Matoran Universe, Karda Nui was a massive cave world as well as a vast chamber and local desert. It was also known as "The Universe Core" or "The World that feeds the world". A cave world and a chamber that provides every power of light and energy to the Matoran Universe such as Metru Nui and other lands. Singly used in a collection of energy-powered crystals of lightstones; as well as a vital source to the entire universe.

It is a direct life force to Mata Nui's very health as well as a direct stability to the universe. Located within the interior of the robot's movable body. However, if direct flow systems providing the universe had forcibly stopped, the health of the Great Spirit would forcibly begin to deteriorate thereafter in the process; causing him to die very slowly in minutes.

It is here where the Toa Mata were assigned to guard this region 100,000 years ago. And protect the Matoran from sentient lightning bolts known as Avohkah before eventually returning to their canisters within the Codrex. The Matoran had also worked there before leaving Karda Nui and inhabited in their cave homes from above it.

Karda Nui.jpg

Locations in Karda Nui:

The Sky Villages

After the cataclysmic earthquake that shook the universe 1000 years ago, great stalactites broke off from the ceiling of Karda Nui and buried themselves in the ground. The Matoran, displaced from their homes by the quake, built villages atop the upturned bases of the stalactites. These villages were linked to each other by vine bridges.

Transport between villages was also accomplished by means of flight packs worn by the Matoran. After the Makuta invasion, some of the villages were protected by lightvines, luminescent plant life from the swamp.

The Hive

When the Makuta came to Karda Nui, they created a hive for themselves which hung from the ceiling of the huge cave. Inside, Antroz, Vamprah, Chirox and Mutran would gather for strategy sessions.

The hive was also the site of the vats in which Shadow leeches were created. Mutran and his assistant Vican did most of this work and also served as guardians for the hive. The Toa Nuva invaded the hive and were captured, but escaped thanks to Pohatu Nuva.

They later destroyed the hive, forcing Mutran to move his operations to the swamp below.

The Swamp

When the earthquake struck, water from outside of the domed universe flooded into Karda Nui, turning the ground into a vast swamp. The murky waters were mutagenic, transforming any living thing that came in contact with them.

Strange plant life grew here as well, all of it twisted, some of it dangerous. The three Makuta who were exposed to the swamp waters were mutated by them and lost their ability to shapeshift. The Toa Nuva journeyed to the swamp to find keystones that would allow them to enter the Codrex and to search for the Mask of Life.

Major battles also took place here between the Toa and the Makuta. The swamp was destroyed by the energy storm that struck Karda Nui.

The Codrex

A mysterious spherical structure in the swamp of Karda Nui, the Codrex has a long history. It was built by the Great Beings and served three purposes:

  • housing the Axalara T9, Rockoh T3, and Jetrax T6 vehicles,

  • providing shelter and protection to the Toa Mata in their Toa Canisters,

  • containing the technology necessary to awaken Mata Nui should that become necessary.

The Toa Nuva rediscovered the Codrex when they returned to Karda Nui. It could be opened only by the use of six keystones. Inside, it seemed vastly bigger than it did on the outside.

The use of a bank of machinery opened a portal in the floor which led to the resting place of the vehicles and the power core used to awaken Mata Nui. Antroz followed the Toa into this area and stole the Jetrax T6. Ignika sacrificed its existence as Toa here to revive the Great Spirit.

The Codrex still stands in Karda Nui, having survived the attacks of the Makuta and the energy storm.

island of xia

The island of Xia is dominated by a rocky peak called simply "the mountain" by residents. All around the peak - literally covering every inch of available space - are forges, factories, warehouses, and docks. The one thing you will not see is homes or shelters. Workers on this island sleep near their posts, in case a sudden order requires them to return to their labours immediately. Environmentally, the island is a disaster. The air is black with soot and dust, and fresh water is nonexistent.

The only source of water is a thin, dirty stream that winds around the mountain, passing through countless factories on its way. Clean air is said to exist at the top of the peak, but since virtually no ones cares to visit there more than once, it serves rather as a tease than a refuge from the pollution below.

History

Xia was, at one time, the northernmost island ruled by Pridak, a member of the League of Six Kingdoms. Given its abundance of natural resources and the industriousness of its people, Pridak ordered that it be the center of weapons productions for his realm. Factories and forges were rapidly built and the inhabitants were put to work creating new and better war machines.

Pridak was eventually banished to the Pit, along with the rulers of the other kingdoms, and his realm broken up. But Xia went on working, producing weapons for whoever wanted to buy them. Their customers eventually included the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters.

However, Dark Hunters never buy when they can steal, and they did in fact steal the prototypes for Zamor Launchers from another client of Xia.

Attempts to hunt down the thieves were unsuccessful, but for a time the Dark Hunters were not welcome on the island.

Xia has also served as a receptacle for things other islands did not want. After the defeat of the Kanohi Dragon on Metru Nui by Toa Lhikan and his team (the Toa Mangai), the beast was brought there.

It disappeared shortly after, but rumour has it that it is being studied in hopes of artificially reproducing its power.

Today, Xia's main custom is the Brotherhood. During the Visorak invasion of Metru Nui and other lands, Xia provided the catapults and other war machines used by the spiders. After the defeat of the Visorak by the Toa Metru, Roodaka returned there to heal her wounds and make plans for the future. It's said she even made a second trip up the Mountain to reaffirm her power and cunning.

Most of their society was dominated by females, and they are the only ones allowed to ever leave the island. Males labour in the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs while females serve as overseers and weapons designers.

island of zakaz

Once a green and lush land, Zakaz is now a monument to senseless destruction.

In ancient times, it was home to many beautiful and advanced cities, a sophisticated transportation network, and abundant resources. Now it is known only for its rubble and ruins, its constant warfare, and the perpetual haze of black smoke from countless fires.

It would be easy to blame the inhabitants of Zakaz for destroying their land. However, the truth is far darker and far more tragic.

The island is also home to six ex-Dark Hunters, the Piraka.

History

Some 75,000 years ago, Zakaz was a thriving island. While its natives, the Skakdi, were never the friendliest or the most trustworthy, they generally manage to live in peace among themselves and with their neighbours. All that changed with the coming of a Brotherhood of Makuta member.

The Brotherhood had claimed at the time that he was a renegade, and they were believed before serving under the Makuta's orders. He looked at the Skakdi and saw a potential army in his scheme. By tampering the Skakdi in an effort to create them into a faction of his soldiers. The resulting changes made the Skakdi more dangerous than they had been before and led to widespread conflicts.

The Skakdi exhibited vision powers such as heat vision, impact vision, and more given by the Makuta. They had also developed elemental powers, which they could use only if working together. The Brotherhood member left the island and later came back to dispatch Visorak hordes in order to keep them in watch with the Skakdi.

The Skakdi rebelled and wiped out every Visorak on the island and then turned against each other thereafter. With the new powers at their command, every minor dispute turned into a battle, and every battle into full-scale destruction. Empires came into being in a matter of days and then shortly crushed. Government and laws broke down and chaos swept the island. When the Makuta came back to check up on his living experiments, half the population was warring with the other half.

The island was eventually quarantined by the Brotherhood, with only Dark Hunters brave enough to set foot on Zakaz.

mahri nui

The village of Mahri Nui rests on the base of an inverted triangle of rock, which is wedged in between a pair of curved pillars of stone. Were it ever to become dislodged, it would tumble end over end into the black water, taking all of the Matoran with it.

Mahri Nui is also a medium-size Matoran village, unique in appearance primarily because of the presence of air bubbles over its buildings. Among the most important locations in the village are the Throne of Vision, where Matoran relate any memories they have of their life before the sinking; the Sanctuary, where artefacts that drift down from above are kept; the Fortress, where experiments are done on airweed and air bubbles; and the memorial to those who have fallen victim to sea predators.

History

Following the Great Cataclysm, which shattered the Order of Mata Nui's original pit, Mahri Nui broke off of the island of Voya Nui and sank. It landed on a preexisting piece of rock, crushing the Barraki's fortress in the city. The impact was so great that bubbles of air were forced from the airweed, granting the surviving Matoran a small supply of air to help them stay alive.

Shortly after, molten protodermis flowed from Voya Nui cooled in the waters and formed a cord connecting it to Mahri Nui. The traumatic events leading to their village ending up underwater damaged the memories of the Matoran, leaving them with only fragmentary recollections of their life on the surface. When one of them actually does put the pieces together to form a coherent memory, he is brought to the Throne of Vision to recount the tale, so it can be recorded.

Nevertheless, the displaced Matoran repaired the damage to their homes as best they could and began to build a new life beneath the waves. First priority was maintenance of the Fields of Air, followed by coming up with a defence against sea predators. The two goals were combined when it was discovered that pure air acts like a toxic gas to underwater dwellers.

The Matoran created launchers that could fire solid bubbles of air at their enemies. And enemies they had many of - though the Matoran were not aware of it, their city had landed right in the midst of the Pit. The Barraki initially planned to destroy the village, until they realised that the Matoran had nothing they wanted.

Instead, they contented themselves with picking off Matoran now and then for sport, or unleashing their legions of sea creatures to harass and frighten the villagers.

The Matoran soon learned that there was one hour of the day when no sea predators roamed the waters. This was nicknamed the "Safe Hour", and became the time when Matoran could tend the Fields of Air or explore outside of the city without fear.

Everything changed dramatically when the Mask of Life drifted down through the water from the shores of Voya Nui. Recovered by the Matoran, it was of immediate interest to the evil Barraki. They saw the mask as an essential first step in reclaiming their lost kingdoms and taking their revenge on the Brotherhood of Makuta.

They attacked Mahri Nui in force and eventually were able to claim the mask for themselves.

island of ARTAKHA

Artakha is an island that changes itself on every visit. Only if outsiders were allowed there. The topography and plant life, and even some aspects of the climate, change seemingly at random. The island can go from beautiful and idyllic one moment; to dark and forbidding the next. Depending on what impression its ruler seeks to make.

History

Artahka was one of the first two islands to come into being in the Matoran universe (the other being Karzahni). It was created from nothing by the Great Beings and was tasked with overseeing the birth of much of the rest of what we now know as the Matoran Universe. Once the universe was whole, the island's inhabitants turned their attention to creating artefacts that would be vital in millennia to come. Here, the Great Kanoka Disks were forged, as well as the Kanohi Mask of Shadows now worn by the Makuta of Metru Nui, Teridax himself.

It was also here that the first Toa came into being in history. Long before Toa Nokama, Gali, and countless other Toa of Water. Her name is Helryx. She was the first ever Toa of Water brought into existence by the Great Beings; and was tasked with the building and construction over the Island city of Metru Nui.

One of the most important objects ever created on Artahka is the Kanohi Avohkii, the Great Mask of Light. Although no Toa of Light existed to wear it at the time,  the mask was considered to be insurance against the day the Brotherhood of Makuta might choose to rebel. If that day came, however, only the power of light would be able to stand against the shadow.

Despite their eventual seclusion from the entire universe, the Matoran on Artahka island were protected under Artahka's care; as well as his responsibilities directly charged under the Great Beings. Visitors came to this island, however; without Artahka's control nor involvement; to inform their fellow Matoran of the world outside the island. Regardless of their strange motivation and their relationship between the ruler and its inhabitants, they freely chose their options upon themselves to keep their purposes for the universe a secret.

When the Brotherhood learned of the existence of the Mask of Light, they invade Artahka and attacked the island's defences with a strike team of Rahkshi and Visorak spiders and stolen the Mask.

Creations such as the thirdly subsequent Kanohi Nuva masks and the Nuva Symbols were teleported to the island of Mata Nui from above.

island of Karzahni

Artahka is a place of refuge for the Matoran, while the realm of Karzahni has become a place of exile and doom. Situated in a rarely travelled area south of the island city of Metru Nui. Karzahni was created along with Artahka in the first days of the universe. At the time, it could be reached by sea as well as by land, but the water routes have long since dried up. The region is now landlocked and the sole surviving access route is treacherous in the extreme. It is not a place one visits by choice... and it is not a place one ever leaves.

History

Karzahni's geography is as twisted as the heart of its ruler. Fire provides no warmth, while the touch of ice burns. Dust falls cascade over mountains while pools of water sit unmoving. Thunder makes no noise, but the sound of a gentle breeze can be deafening. Karzahni rests in the middle of a bowl-shaped canyon.

The pathways leading to it are flanked by what appears to be statues of Matoran. In fact, these are Matoran turned to stone for the crime of laziness. Just as they have become rock of the pathway has become a form of life. The stones scream beneath your feet when you walk upon them.

Sitting in the middle of the realm is the fortress of Karzahni himself, the realm's ruler. While it was once a stunning landmark, it has degenerated over time into a charred ruin. The fires inside are visible from some distance away, but there is nothing welcoming about the sight.

The only other major structures are the huge forges and furnaces used to make tools and weapons and "repair" Matoran mechanical parts. Absent from the region are shelters for the Matoran who live there. They remain outdoors, exposed to the elements, with no place to rest except on hard, barren rock.

Early History

During creation of the Matoran Universe, the realm of Karzahni came into being for a very simple reason. Matoran workers have always been among the most important inhabitants of the universe. Without them, the will of the Great Spirit cannot be carried out. So if a Matoran is injured or for some reason is a poor worker, it is important that any damage be healed as quickly as possible.

The Matoran can then be returned to the labor force ready to do his or her part. This realm was intended to be the place where injuries could be repaired and poor attitudes could be changed.

The being named Karzahni was placed in charge. His job was to welcome new Matoran who had been sent here by their village elders and to do what he could to make them good and healthy workers again. Unfortunately, it rapidly became obvious he did not know how to do that.

The first Matoran sent to him did not become stronger as a result of his work - they became smaller, weaker, and strangely twisted by what he did. To compensate, Karzahni gave them weapons to defend themselves and then shipped them as far from realm as he could so they would not be around to remind him of his failure (these Matoran would eventually wind on the island  of Voya Nui).

More Matoran arrived from other lands, and more failures resulted. Karzahni eventually decided the problem was not his skill - it was the Matoran themselves. It was obviously not their destiny to be repaired, but instead to be punished.

Karzahni stopped even trying to make Matoran better and started imprisoning them within his realm. After a long period of sending Matoran to Karzahni, only to never have them return, village elders stopped transporting their people to the realm. Legends grew about Karzahni as a place to which bad workers were sent, never to return, and Matoran would use the tales to frighten one another.

"Go to Karzahni!" became a common phrase in their arguments.

Years later, six Matoran of Metru Nui; Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Matoro, Hewkii, and Nuparu travelled there to reach Voya Nui and find the Mask of Life and the missing Toa Nuva.
