mutations and transformations
Heroes gifted with greater strength, stronger armour, and greater control of their elemental powers than ordinary Toa possess. Toa Nuva also have the ability to use KANOHI NUVA, masks that allow the wearer to share their power with those in close proximity. The only known means of transforming a Toa into Toa Nuva is via exposure to Energised Protodermis.

Only six Toa Nuva have ever been known to exist: Gali Nuva, Tahu Nuva, Kopaka Nuva, Pohatu Nuva, Onua Nuva, and Lewa Nuva.

Originally TOA MATA on Mata Nui, these six heroes were immersed in energised protodermis shortly after their defeat of the BAHRAG. The experience transformed them and made them more powerful than before. Although that enhanced power for a time threatened to shatter their unity, they were able to combine forces to defeat the BOHROK-KAL and the RAHKSHI. They later led the Turaga and Matoran back to their homeland of Metru Nui.

Once there, the Toa Nuva were told by Turaga Dume that Mata Nui was dying and they had to travel to the island of Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life, in order to save him. On Voya Nui, they battled the Piraka and Brutaka and were defeated and imprisoned. They were later freed by a group of Matoran led by Garan. Following a conversation with Axonn and Botar, the Toa Nuva left Voya Nui and returned to Metru Nui.

There, they broke into the Great Temple in Ga-Metru and uncovered a list of tasks that had to be done to awaken Mata Nui, including freeing the Bahrag and unleashing the Bohrok once again. That has been done, and they are currently pursuing the other tasks they must do in order prepare the universe for the Great Spirit's return.
Tahu, Toa nuva of fire

Tahu was the Toa Mata of Fire, who once resided on Mata Nui during his time as a protector of the island and later became a Toa Nuva after his exposure to Energized Protodermis.
Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. Tahu Nuva grew, if anything, more overconfident and arrogant. This led to arguments with Kopaka and eventually a decision to split up the team. None of the Toa Nuva could know that this would leave them vulnerable to a later attack by the Bohrok-Kal. It was Tahu's potentially dangerous use of the Kanohi Vahi, the Mask of Time, that helped to end that threat. Despite how close the Toa came to being defeated in that instance, Tahu Nuva had not yet learned a badly needed lesson about unity. His stubbornness alienated him from Gali. When the Rahkshi attacked Ta-Koro, Tahu Nuva attempted to challenge them on his own. The result was defeat, destruction of the village, and a scratch from the poisonous Lerahk.
The poison ravaged Tahu Nuva's system, causing him to easily become enraged and turn on his friends. It took Kopaka's ice power to stop his rampage, and the power of all five Toa Nuva to remove the poison. Their unity now restored, the Toa Nuva challenged the Rahkshi and won with the aid of Takanuva, Toa of Light. They later witnesses Takanuva's victory over the Makuta himself and the rediscovery of Metru Nui.
Back on Mata Nui, Tahu Nuva helped oversee the construction of boats for a journey back to the city of legends, Metru Nui. He also joined with the others in listening to Turaga Vakama's tales of life in Metru Nui centuries before. Tahu Nuva led the Toa Nuva, Takanuva, and the Turaga and Matoran back to Metru Nui. Shortly after their arrival, he and his teammates were sent to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. They encountered the Piraka and Brutaka on that island and were defeated and imprisoned. They were later saved by Garan and the Matoran Resistance. Tahu and his team then returned to Metru Nui and begun preparations to awaken Mata Nui. Along the way, Tahu retrieved Jaller's old mask from the realm of Karzahni.

gali Toa nuva of water

Gali was the Toa Mata of Water, who once resided on Mata Nui during her time as a protector of the island and later became a Toa Nuva after her exposure to Energized Protodermis.
Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. When Kopaka and Tahu decided to break up the team, Gali Nuva objected strongly. But no one, not even Onua, supported her. It would be some time before she forgave her friends. Later, after the Bohrok-Kal had stolen the Toa Nuva's powers, Gali teamed with Turaga Nokama to search for Kanohi Nuva masks and was almost killed by a great temple squid. She was the first to see the coming she led the other Toa in a healing ritual to save Tahu's life. Gali was also there to witness Takanuva's victory over Teridax and the rediscovery of Metru Nui. Back on Mata Nui, Gali Nuva helped with the construction of boats for a journey back to Metru Nui, city of legends. She also joined with the others in listening to Turaga Vakama's tales of life in Metru Nui centuries before.
Gali Nuva returned to Metru Nui with the other Toa Nuva, the Turaga, and the Matoran. Once there, she and her teammates were dispatched to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika. There they battled the Piraka and Brutaka, and were defeated in a treacherous attack from behind. They were imprisoned but later freed by the Matoran Resistance. They have since returned to Metru Nui, beginning preparations for the awakening of Mata Nui, including the freeing of the Bahrag and the unleashing of the Bohrok.

Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. When Kopaka and Tahu decided to break up the team, Lewa went along with them. Later, after the Bohrok-Kal had stolen the Toa Nuva's powers, Lewa Nuva teamed with Tahu to search for Kanohi Nuva masks. Lewa encountered Takua and Jaller during their search for Takanuva, saving them both from an Ash bear. He led them both to Ko-Wahi, where the village drums informed him that Ta-Koro had fallen to the Rahkshi. He left the two Matoran there while we went to join the other Toa Nuva. Later, Lewa teamed with Tahu Nuva to imprison Lerahk, Panrahk, and Guurahk in a prison of glass. He was there to witness Takanuva's victory over Teridax and the rediscovery of Metru Nui. Back on Mata Nui, Lewa Nuva helped with the construction of boats for a journey back to the city of legends. He also joined with the others in listening to Turaga Vakama's tales of life in Metru Nui centuries before.
Lewa Nuva returned to Metru Nui with the other Toa Nuva, Matoran and Turaga. Once there, he and his teammate were dispatched to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika.
KOPAKA, Toa nuva of ICE

Kopaka was the Toa Mata of Ice, who once resided on Mata Nui during his time as a protector of the island and later became a Toa Nuva after his exposure to Energized Protodermis.
Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. Tahu and Kopaka fought shortly after, an argument which led to the break-up of the team. This damaged Kopaka's friendship with Gali for some time. Later, after the Bohrok-Kal had stolen the Toa Nuva's powers, Kopaka Nuva teamed with Pohatu to search for Kanohi Nuva masks. Kopaka encountered Takua and Jaller during their search for Takanuva, saving them from a Rahkshi attack. Discovering that Ko-Koro had been badly damaged by the invaders, Kopaka bid the Matoran farewell as he went to aid his village. Later, Kopaka teamed with Tahu Nuva, Onua Nuva, and Pohatu Nuva to imprison Kurahk and Vorahk in forzen magma. He was there to witness Takanuva's victory over the Makuta and the rediscovery of Metru Nui. Back on Mata Nui, Kopaka Nuva helped with the construction of boats for a journey back to the city of legends, Metru Nui. He also joined with the others in listening to Turaga Vakama's tales of life in Metru Nui centuries before. Kopaka Nuva returned to Metru Nui with the other Toa Nuva, Matoran, and the Turaga.
onua, Toa nuva of earth

Onua was the Toa Mata of Earth, who once resided on Mata Nui during his time as a protector of the island and later became a Toa Nuva after his exposure to Energized Protodermis.
Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. Onua said nothing as his teammates grew arrogant and quarrelsome, nor did he step in to prevent Tahu and Kopaka from splitting up the team. This made Gali angry with Onua for his failure to act. During the Bohrok-Kal invasion, Onua teamed with Turaga Whenua to find the Kanohi Nuva masks, encountering and driving off Manas in the process. When the Rahkshi attacked Onu-Koro, he battled them alongside Pohatu. He was part of the Rahkshi's final defeat, and a witness to Takanuva's defeat of Teridax. Onua joined with the others in listening to Turaga Vakama's tales of life in Metru Nui centuries before. Onua Nuva travelled with the other Toa Nuva, Turaga and Matoran, back to Metru Nui. Shortly after their arrival, he and his teammates were sent to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. They encountered the Piraka and Brutaka on that island and have since journeyed back to Metru Nui as the first part of their quest to prepare for the reawakening of Mata Nui.

Following the defeat of the twin Bohrok queens, the Bahrag, the six Toa were transformed by energised protodermis into Toa Nuva. Despite the increase in power, Pohatu remain modest and friendly. After the Bohrok-Kal stole the Toa's elemental powers, Pohatu teamed with Kopaka to track down the Kanohi Nuva masks. Pohatu was in attendance at the Kohlii match when it was revealed that Takua had discovered the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light. Pohatu later joined with Onua in a futile effort to defend Onu-Koro against the Rahkshi. During this period, he infuriated to discover that the Turaga had been keeping captured Kraata in a Po-Wahi cave without informing him. History of the Toa Nuva

Ignition
Ignition

Once on Metru Nui, Turaga Dume delivered the grave news that Mata Nui was not only asleep, but dying. He told the Toa Nuva of the Ignika, Mask of Life that could potentially save him, and sent them to the island of Voya Nui, where it was supposed to be hidden. Unfortunately, rogue Dark Hunters calling themselves "Piraka" were also in search of the mask. When the Toa Nuva arrived, the two groups quickly got in a fight, which the Toa ultimately lost, although it was a close battle. The Piraka's leader, Zaktan, had ordered their weapons and Kanohi taken and their unconscious bodies thrown into the volcano. However, upon being abandoned like so much trash by the Piraka when the volcano erupted, they woke up in time to grab their tools and pull themselves out of the path of the eruption - only to be attacked by the island's few remaining free Matoran, who were fooled into believing the Piraka were Toa and didn't want to risk being tricked twice.

But the Order of Mata Nui's agent on Voya Nui, Axonn, told the Ta-Matoran Balta that the Nuva really were Toa and so Balta halted the fight. Once the fighting stopped and the Matoran accepted the fact that the Nuva really were Toa, the two groups teamed up to infiltrate the Piraka Stronghold and take back their masks. They did so and were about to fight the Piraka again, but Zaktan's ally Brutaka intervened and defeated all twelve heroes in one hit. While the Matoran eventually escaped, the Toa Nuva were imprisoned and their masks taken as trophies...

While the Piraka and Toa Inika were later busy searching for the Ignika and Brutaka was fighting his ex-partner Axonn, the Matoran rebels entered the stronghold and searched for the Toa Nuva. They found them chained to the wall and enslaved by the Piraka's antidermis virus, forced to drain out their elemental power even to the point of death. The Matoran freed the Nuva from both chains and enslavement and helped them to their masks, telling them of the Toa Inika that had arrived after they did; and the Nuva were surprised to learn these new heroes were old friends from Mata Nui.

After meeting Axonn and his associate Botar, the Toa Nuva met the Toa Inika, who had reached the Mask of Life only for it to fly away and dive underneath the ocean. The Inika were worried that they would be sent back to Metru Nui while the Nuva continued the mission, but the Nuva recognised that destiny had chosen the Inika for the task of saving the Great Spirit's life; and Tahu told the Inika that the Nuva would be waiting in Metru Nui for their safe return. However, after the Inika left, he admitted to Axonn that he lied; the Nuva were departing on a new mission that the Inika could not be a part of. During their depart from Voya Nui, however, Gali was objectively dismayed with Tahu and therefore wished to aide the Inika with their mission in reviving the Great Spirit; but knew in her heart that she must perform her original purpose in reawakening Mata Nui. Whilst believing in the Toa Inika to succeed.

Botar, another member of the Order of Mata Nui, had told them that there was a scroll in the Great Temple on Metru Nui that gave a list of tasks to be completed before the Great Spirit could be awakened, put there by the Great Beings near the beginning of the Matoran Universe.

The Toa Nuva proceeded to Metru Nui and found the scroll. The first task was to free the Bahrag and awaken the Bohrok swarms, allowing them to destroy the island of Mata Nui. The Toa were incredulous, even to the point of questioning if the list had actually been written by Teridax. But nevertheless, they freed the Bohrok and continued on with the second task: to find the Staff of Artakha. It was supposedly in the Onu-Metru Archives, but it had been stolen years before in a Dark Hunter raid. They travelled to Odina in search of the Staff, where the Shadowed One informed them that it was on Xia. In return for the information they were to kill Roodaka. When they arrived on Xia, they found the Kanohi Dragon brought there millennia ago by Lhikan fighting with a Tahtorak, who had been placed there by Botar hours before.
They protected the native Vortixx while Onua went underground into the storeroom where the Staff of Artakha was being kept. When they found Roodaka, they demanded her help: she had transformed the Toa Hagah into Rahaga years before, and they demanded that she transform them back. Lewa fetched the Rahaga and Roodaka reluctantly complied. Onua emerged, however, beaten within an inch of his life by a Makuta named Icarax, the Makuta of Karzahni.
Icarax was traveling to Mahri Nui with it to deliver it to Teridax, now in the body of a robot called Maxilos. Teridax used the staff to recreate the Nui Stone and give it to a Toa who fell under Makuta's control. The Toa Nuva pursued Icarax and fought him again in the realm of Karzahni. Gali used a Nova Blast and destroyed the entire realm, but Icarax had already escaped with the Staff. He delivered it to Teridax, but Brutaka, banished to the Pit, stopped him from recreating the Nui Stone and Botar stole the Staff of Artakha from him.

Discouraged but not stopped by their failure to recover the Staff of Artakha, the Nuva split up. Tahu and Kopaka went to a southern island chain to quell an active volcano. Pohatu and Onua went in pursuit as an artifact known as the "Heart of the Visorak". Lewa went on a secret mission, and Gali returned to the now-destroyed island of Mata Nui to observe the position of the Red Star, where she discovered that there were living things inside of it. She was then teleported by Botar to Daxia to see the Staff of Artakha being used to repair all damage done to the universe by and since the Great Cataclysm.

A few days after Mata Nui had died and been revived by Matoro, the Toa Nuva travelled to the realm of Artakha for their final mission on the scroll. There they were given adaptive armour by Artakha himself, and he sent them to the Universe Core, below the mainland, where a battle was taking place in the sky.

toa kaita
Two distinct beings formed by the merging of the Toa Mata. Wairuha was created when Gali, Kopaka, and Lewa combined, and Akamai by the joining of Tahu, Onua, and Pohatu. The Toa Kaita were first seen by Gali in a vision. Later, the Toa chose to bring them into being to defeat the Manas guardians of Teridax. They have not been seen to form Kaita since that time.

Although the Toa Metru also had the potential to form Toa Kaita, they never did so simply because they did not know how to accomplish the feat.
Wairuha; an entity combined by Gali, Kopaka, and Lewa.
Akamai; an entity combined by Tahu, Onua, and Pohatu.
toa nuva in karda nui
When the Toa Nuva were teleported by Artakha into Karda Nui, they found themselves in the middle of a pitched battle between a trio of Makuta and the Matoran of Light (Av-Matoran). Although the Makuta were beaten back, the Toa knew it was only a matter of time before they would be back.

Fearing the Makuta might get hold of the Mask of Life, Tahu led Onua and Gali down to the swamp far below. Kopaka and Pohatu were promptly defeated by the enemy, but Lewa and Tanma mounted a successful rescue effort. Meanwhile, Antroz dispatched Vican to the island of Destral to bring back Makuta Icarax to combat the Toa.
The heroes learned much of what had happened in Karda Nui over the past few days - how the Makuta had used shadow leeches to drain the light from Av-Matoran, turning them into evil shadow Matoran.
Determined to stop this, the Toa captured Kirop and then let him escape, trailing him back to the shadow leech hive. They were joined by a mysterious new Toa who none of them recognised (Toa Ignika).

Inside the hive, the Toa were tricked into battling Ignika and then captured. Led by Pohatu, they escaped, pausing only to destroy the hive. Makuta Icarax challenged Toa Ignika, but was soundly defeated.

Seeing the battle going against them, the Makuta retreated to the swamp. The Toa Nuva and their Av-Matoran followed, leaving Toa Ignika to guard the fallen Icarax. The Makuta later informed Ignika that the Mask of Life was a threat to all that lived, prompting Ignika to abandon his guard duty to find the Toa Nuva and tell them of the danger.
toa nuva tahu

Returning to Karda Nui was particularly difficult for Tahu Nuva. Of all the Toa, only he had clear memories of their last visit here, when he tricked the others into remaining in the Codrex for 100,000 years. It is not something he is proud of, though he knows it had to be done. Had the Toa Nuva been out adventuring during that time, and one of them been killed, they might never have achieved their destiny and awakened Mata Nui. Tahu led the Toa squad that travelled to the swamps of the core. Their mission was to find the Mask of Life, find the keystones to open the Codrex, and deal with any Makuta they might find. Tahu soon discovered that creative use of his power would be necessary here, such as when he used his flame to explosively ignite swamp gas and stun Makuta Vamprah.

Tahu Nuva wears adaptive armour provided him by Artakha, which is equipped with four powerful jet rockets for speed. He carries an adaptive weapon which has taken the form of a Nynrah ghost blaster, capable of creating any object the user wills out of pure energy. He is also armed with a rotating fire blade. He wears the newly-reshaped Kanohi Hau Nuva, the Mask of Shielding.

The Toa Nuva of Fire has since returned to Metru Nui. He is now in overall command of all surviving Toa in the universe.
toa nuva gali

Even in the worst of times, Gali Nuva always tried to be a voice of reason, looking for peaceful solutions to problems. Some of that changed in the days before the Toa came to Karda Nui. Forced to battle Icarax for the Staff of Artahka, Gali unleashed a tidal wave that destroyed the realm of Karzahni. She had never caused such havoc before with her elemental powers, but there had been no choice. Like it or not, the Toa were at war, and she was going to have to fight. Although she had known the fight between the Toa and the Makuta had to come someday, it still filled her with dread. The forces were both so powerful that their conflict might destroy Karda Nui, even the entire universe. Neither side would hold back, neither side would surrender, and it seemed no mercy could be shown. She wondered if the Toa could even hope to stick to most important part of their code: that Toa would never kill their enemies.

Gali Nuva wore a suit of adaptive armour with two powerful, foot-mounted jets. She was armed with a Nynrah ghost blaster, and wore the newly-transformed Kaukau Nuva , the Mask of Water Breathing. Although she used her elemental power a great deal in Karda Nui, she had to exercise great control to make sure the mutagenic water did not strike her allies. She is currently on Metru Nui. At Tahu's request, she is engaged in research in the Great Temple, hoping to learn the secrets of the Great Beings who created Mata Nui.
toa nuva lewa

Lewa found himself extraordinarily prepared for the battle in Karda Nui, given that he already had experience in flying. After arriving in the core, he mounted a rescue mission for Pohatu and Kopaka with Tanma, battled Antroz to a standstill, and helped destroy the shadow leech hive. Moving down to the swamp, Lewa worked with Gali to produce a massive thunderstorm to distract the Makuta. He later piloted the Axalara T9 in battle against Antroz in the Jetrax T6 and assorted Makuta. He successfully escaped the core along with the other Toa and is now in Metru Nui. Lewa's adaptive armour allowed him to fly. While in Karda Nui, he carried a Midak skyblaster which fired bolts of light and wielded an air saber. His newly-transformed Kanohi Miru Nuva; Mask of Levitation; gave him the ability to manoeuvre better while in flight.
toa nuva kopaka

The Toa of Ice served as team leader for the squad assigned to protect the Matoran villages in Karda Nui. It was not an easy job, as they faced five fierce and powerful Makuta. Relying on his intelligence to see him through, Kopaka masterminded the capture of Kirop and the plan to let him escape and follow him back to the shadow leech hive. This led to the destruction of the hive and did great damage to the Makuta's ability to produce the leeches. Kopaka intended to pilot the Jetrax T6, but Antroz stole the ship before he could so. He later regained it and flew it in battle against the Makuta. Later, he prevented Takanuva from succumbing to his dark side and killing the Makuta named Chirox. On Karda Nui, Kopaka carried a Midak skyblaster with a blizzard blade attached and a laser targeting system. He also had a targeting system built into his mask. He is currently back on Metru Nui.
toa nuva onua

Onua has always been considered one of the wisest of Toa, and he showed why in Karda Nui. From the start, something did not feel right about this adventure. The Toa Nuva were outnumbered and certainly outpowered by the Makuta, yet somehow they had avoided destruction. It almost felt as if, despite their ferocious attacks, the Makuta were holding back. Onua could not help but wonder why. Unable to find an answer, he concentrated on carrying out the mission. Onua's power over earth saved the Toa more than once in the swamp, and he was the first to discover the function of the Nynrah ghost blasters. Makuta Gorast tried repeatedly to convince Onua to switch sides, claiming that he would enjoy having a "spirit as black as his armour". But Onua refused, prepared to give up his life to fulfil the team's destiny, if necessary. Like Tahu, Onua wore adaptive armour, equipped with high tech wings and jet rockets. He carried a Nynrah ghost blaster and a multi-resistant shield. He wears the newly-transformed Kanohi Pakari Nuva; Mask of Strength.

Onua is currently on Metru Nui, tasked with transforming the Archives into an impenetrable fortress.
toa nuva pohatu

Flight did not come naturally to a Toa of Stone, but Pohatu knew he had to master combat in the air or die. Despite a number of close calls, including being thrown toward the swamp by Chirox's shadow hand, Pohatu proved to be an effective fighter. Captured along with Kopaka and Lewa and chained up in the Makuta hive, he used his Mask of Speed to escape and free the others before destroying the hive. Pohatu piloted the Rockoh T3 above the swamp, doing battle with Antroz in the stolen Jetrax T6. Pohatu played a key role in the battle by forming a stone hand that erupted from the muddy waters and held the Jetrax in place while he raked the side of the stolen ship with energy bolts. In Karda Nui, Pohatu carried twin propellers and a Midak skyblaster. He wears the newly-transformed Kanohi Kakama Nuva; the Mask of Speed. He is currently back on Metru Nui.
History
swamp of shadows
Swamp of Shadows

Shortly after arriving in Karda Nui, the Toa Nuva decided to split their forces. Kopaka, Lewa, and Pohatu remained to defend the Av-Matoran in the sky villages, while Tahu led Gali and Onua to the swamp below. No one knew what they might find there, as the mist separated swamp from sky was impossible to see through. Even the Matoran had only gone to the swamp when they had to, and that was when there were no Makuta in the core. Realising just how vast the swamp really was, Tahu's team decided to split up. The Toa Nuva of Fire was the first to spot the Codrex, but when he tried to take a closer look, he ran into a force field which knocked him unconscious. Helpless, he lay in the mud as the Makuta named Krika rose from the swamp to feed on his energy.

Tahu awoke just in time, but he was badly weakened. Krika told him that Makuta hated Toa because Toa were what they could only pretend to be - true heroes who did the right thing for no other reason than it was right. And so they got the honours the Makuta wanted for themselves. Krika told Tahu Nuva he was going to kill him, but before he could act, Tahu shot a bolt of flame into the air - a call for help.

Little did he know that Onua and Gali were both in need of help themselves, as they fought their own battles in the dangerous swamp...

Toa Onua's search for keystones had so far turned up nothing. Stopping to rest for a moment on a spit of mud, he spotted a giant Nui-Kopen wasp coming to attack him. He swatted it into the swamp, then watched as the waters mutated the insect into a monstrous version of itself. Onua realised that something in the water had caused the change - but before he could defend himself, he was attacked from behind by the Makuta named Bitil. The Makuta used his own ghost blaster to take over all the mechanical parts of Onua's body.

Bitil revealed his mask power to Onua, resulting in a horde of duplicates of Bitil appearing from nowhere. They took Onua to Krika's lair, but Krika was not there. While they were on that island, the effects of the ghost blaster wore off. Onua caused an explosion of mud to engulf the Makuta and flew off. When the original Bitil pursued, Onua used his ghost blaster to create an energy sphere around the Makuta. Trapped, Bitil fell into the swamp.
Onua knew he had to warn the others that the Makuta were in the swamp. But how to find them? That problem was solved when he spotted Tahu's fireball soaring up through the sky. He knew Tahu would never call for help unless it was an emergency. He flew off to aid the Toa of Fire, but before he could reach him, he spotted another Toa who needed his help...

Gali Nuva was the first Toa to spot one of the keystones, wrapped up in the tendrils of a swamp plant. She was about to retrieve it when some sixth sense warned her to turn around. It was just in time, as Makuta Gorast was diving to attack.

A furious battle followed. Gali took a chance, trapping Gorast's head inside a sphere of water. To her surprise, she succeeded in cutting off the Makuta's air (the effects of the swamp waters had changed Gorast so that she now needed to breathe). But that was not enough to stop the Makuta. Finally, Gali used her power to increase the moisture in the ground beneath Gorast's feet. The Makuta made no effort to free herself, instead sinking beneath the mud. Gali couldn't believe anyone would let themselves perish like that.

The next instant, Gorast erupted from the ground behind Gali. The Makuta attacked, starting to drain Gali's light from her. Fortunately, Onua flew by at just that moment. Spotting the trouble, he grabbed Gorast, lifted her high into the air, and smashed her down to earth. Realising there was nothing to be gained by the fight, Onua chose to rescue Gali and fly to where he had seen Tahu's fireball.

The only hope the Toa Nuva had now was to stand together.

The Final Battle
THE FINAL BATTLE

After rescuing Tahu from Krika, the three Toa Nuva found themselves in what seemed a losing battle. But hope was reborn with the arrival of Pohatu, Kopaka, and Lewa. Although the Makuta were united again as well, the Toa were able to drive them off. Two new arrivals also added to the Toa's strength (Takanuva and Ignika), but both brought terrible news. Takanuva arrived in Karda Nui after a long journey between dimensions to warn the Toa Nuva of impending doom. When Mata Nui was reawakened, a great energy storm would erupt in Karda Nui, destroying anything that lived. If the Toa Nuva could not find some way to escape, they would die there as well.
Toa Ignika added to the tension, as it revealed that the Mask of Life was on a countdown to the annihilation of all life in the entire universe. Using the keystones they had gathered, the Toa Nuva made their way into the Codrex. There they discovered empty slots where once six Toa canisters had rested. Shocked, they realised that this must have been where they had slept so many millennia away, waiting for the call to action. Curious, Onua studied the strange machinery in the room. Passing his hand in front of a panel, he caused the section of the floor with the canister slots to slowly drop. Down below there was a vast chamber, laid out like the spokes of a wheel. When the section of floor settled in the centre, huge lightstones rose in a circle from it.

The Toa Nuva flew down to investigate. They discovered three powerful vehicles, long concealed. Built by Artakha when the universe was new, they were the Axalara T9, the Jetrax T6, and the Rockoh T3. Lewa, Pohatu, and Kopaka were set to pilot them against the Makuta, but before they could do so, Antroz stole the Jetrax. Lewa and Pohatu pursued him in the Axalara and Rockoh, and a furious aerial battle began. Kopaka and Onua soon left to join the battle, followed by Takanuva, who was determined to save the Matoran from the coming storm. Tahu was next to go, revealing to Gali before he went his guilt over helping to confine the Toa in the Codrex for so much of their lives.

Gali had discovered the process by which Mata Nui could be reawakened, but it was a long one - too long, with the Kanohi Ignika soon to eliminate all life. Desperately, she pleaded with Toa Ignika. Only the Mask of Life would have the power to bring Mata Nui back to life quickly enough to end the countdown. With the memory of Matoro's sacrifice in its mind, Ignika agreed. It began a descent into the middle of the lightstones.

Outside, the Toa Nuva and Makuta continued their battle. Takanuva had succeeded in curing the shadow Matoran and now directed all of the Av-Matoran to flee Karda Nui and go to Metru Nui, where they would be safe. He was just in time, for the energy storm had begun to gather strength.

The Ignika had begun the process of awakening Mata Nui. Now the Toa Nuva and Takanuva could only hope to escape before it was too late. Climbing aboard the three vehicles, they rocketed across Karda Nui. Looking down, Tahu Nuva realised the storm was going to claim the Makuta - and there was nothing the Toa could do about it, not if they wished to live themselves.

"They lit this inferno", said the Toa of Fire. "Let them burn in it."

Reign of Shadows
Reign of Shadows

Once the Toa got to Metru Nui, a big celebration was held for the awakening of the Great Spirit Mata Nui, only to be interrupted by Teridax, announcing that he had just taken over the Matoran Universe and sent Mata Nui out of his own body.

At this point, the Toa Nuva were forced to split up. They then went along, doing whatever they could to attempt to stop Teridax.

The Awakening

The Toa Nuva made it back to Metru Nui and were with the Turaga when they announced that Mata Nui was finally awake. But they found out that after Matoro put on the Mask of Life and saved Mata Nui, Teridax slipped into Mata Nui's body and put Mata Nui's soul into the Mask of Life. He had then banished the mask from the universe and proclaimed his rule over it.

Due to a Rahkshi attack, Tahu was badly injured. He and the other Toa Nuva hid in the Archives. He later came up with a plan - even if Teridax had control over the entire Matoran Universe, his mind was not designed to control it. Therefore, he thought, if they split up and caused trouble at many places at once, maybe Teridax would lose his grip on the Universe.

Gali recently went missing, but she was then found and helped the other Toa get the Matoran to safety. She and the others fought off Rahkshi while protecting the Matoran. They then hid under the Coliseum. She was later tasked with going to the Great Temple in order to figure out the Secrets of the Great Beings.

The Toa Nuva made it back to the Coliseum and were with the Turaga when they announced that Mata Nui was finally awake. However, the celebrations were cut short when Makuta's voice started to emanate from nowhere and everywhere, and a constellation appeared in Metru Nui's darkened sky in the form of the Kraahkan. Makuta revealed to the population of the city that after Matoro had donned the Mask of Life and saved Mata Nui, he had slipped into Mata Nui's body and put Mata Nui's soul into the Mask of Life; now that he controlled the entire Matoran Universe, the Master of Shadows plunged every Matoran, Toa and Turaga into a new era of darkness and fear over which he reigned supreme. Evading Makuta's enforcers, Takanuva later resisted within the Archives with the other Toa Nuva.

During this period, the Toa of Light altered his color scheme to white, silver and grey to appear less conspicuous to Makuta. Subsequently, during Makuta's reign of shadows, Takanuva traveled to the ruined island of Destral with Pohatu in search of a teleportation device they could use to contact another universe for help in their fight against Teridax. They eventually found it in a broken state, and Takanuva requested the help of Nuparu to fix it; his efforts proved fruitless, and the device remained useless.
toa takanuva

Having survived an attack by a shadow leech on Metru Nui, Takanuva found his powers changed. Though he was still the Toa of Light, much of his light had been drained, leaving darkness in its place. As a result, he could now fire light only from his left hand, and shadow from his right. Upon his arrival in the universe core, he grew larger, as his body absorbed the energies of Karda Nui. Takanuva wore the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light, and carried a power lance and a Nynrah ghost blaster, both of which he acquired in an alternate dimension before arriving in Karda Nui.

Metru Nui

After returning to Metru Nui, Takanuva had been adjusting to his new role and responsibilities as a Toa, and was still unsure of himself when with the more experienced Toa Nuva. When Turaga Dume sent the Toa Nuva off to retrieve the Mask of Life, he insisted that Takanuva stay behind to protect Metru Nui. Jaller later gathered a group of Matoran to follow and aid the Toa Nuva, and Takanuva was a part of this group until they arrived at Karzahni, where there stood a type of barrier through which no light (or Toa of Light) could pass, forcing Takanuva to turn back.

Once back on Metru Nui, he had two dangers to defend the city against "Dweller", who was hiding in the Archives with his existence unknown to the residents, and tribes of Frostelus that invaded the northern regions.

While patrolling Metru Nui, Takanuva was attacked by a Shadow Leech. When the Toa of Light awoke, some of his light had already been sucked out, turning his golden mask and outer armor gunmetal, and causing his mask to change shape. Now, with the ability to control both light and darkness, Takanuva was approached by Helryx, Krakua, and the now-reformed Brutaka, who gave him a mission to go to Karda Nui and find the Toa Nuva in order to relay an important message to them. Takua received the now-shrunken Great Sundial to help with his task, and Brutaka then used his Olmak to send Takanuva to the heart of the Matoran Universe; however, due to his mask being damaged, the Toa of Light and Shadow found himself in a dying forest of black trees.

The Journey to Karda Nui

The City of Silver

Takanuva was then approached by a mysterious being taking the form of a Hau, who began to inform him that a nearby village faced great danger. Hearing this, Takua rushed off to save the village before the Mask could clarify the nature of the danger.

The "village" turned out to be a vast city of silver towers, and upon entering it Takanuva found a large beast locked in combat with a race of purple-black beings known as Kestora. Assuming the creature to be the threat the mask-like entity spoke of, Takanuva successfully drove the creature out of the City of Silver. However, he soon discovered that the creature he had believed to be the threat was actually benevolent and peaceful, and one of the true builders and residents of the City before the Kestora attacked it.
Moreover, the Kestora were responsible for wiping out the rest of the creature's kind, leaving it the sole surviving member of his species. Determined to correct his mistake, Takanuva sought out the city-building creature, gained his trust, and joined forces to retake the city; using his powers of light, Takanuva drew the Kestora out of the city by creating a fireworks display, while the creature burrowed back into his city home and locked the Kestora out.

After the whole ordeal, the Spectral Mask congratulated him for learning to not assume good or evil based on appearances, and opened a new dimensional gateway for the Toa. However, instead of ending up in Karda Nui, Takanuva now found himself in what appeared to be a cross between the island of Mata Nui and Metru Nui.

The Kingdom

Takanuva was surprised to find that he was once again on the island of Mata Nui, but it was different from how he remembered it: The island had become a massive megalopolis, a fusion of old and new architecture, and Matoran now worked and lived in harmony alongside creatures that were hostile in his dimension, such as Visorak, Skakdi, Bohrok and even Dark Hunters. Approached by this dimension's version of Macku, Takanuva tried to explain who he was, but the Ga-Matoran wasn't convinced, as he was much taller than the "real" Takanuva, who was apparently now a Turaga in this universe.
A very confused Takanuva asked to be led to Jaller, and a suspicious Macku led him into the city despite her better judgment, but not before consulting Axonn about the integrity of Takanuva. Axonn decided that the Toa did indeed believe himself to be Takanuva, but confiscated his Staff of Light just in case.

Takanuva was then brought to Toa Jaller, who informed him that the island was now known as the Kingdom of the Great Spirit. The Toa of Light briefly considered proving his identity to Jaller by telling him things only he would know, but discarded it as such revelations would be more likely to raise suspicions rather than quell them; instead, he simply said that he was a friend of this world's Turaga Takanuva, and that he had been told to go to Jaller if he was in trouble.
The Fire Toa offhandedly commented that he and the other five Toa Mahri were not well-liked in the Kingdom; his mention of Matoro being alive got Takanuva's attention, and he rushed to this world's Wall of History, where he found out what had caused this world's present to differ from that of his own: Where his universe's Matoro had succeeded in reviving Mata Nui at the cost of his own life, the Matoro of this universe had briefly hesitated, and thus was sealed off from the core of the universe and unable to use the Ignika to save the life of the Great Spirit.

However, the Turaga of Metru Nui had been planning for this possible outcome, and led the mass migration of as many of the MU species as possible out of the dying universe and onto the surface of Mata Nui. Agreeing that they needed to cooperate to survive, the various species decided to live in harmony, and thus the Kingdom was born.
The Brotherhood of Makuta also attempted to reach the surface, but the Toa Takanuva of this dimension and the Order of Mata Nui sealed them underground with barriers of pure light. His destiny fulfilled, the Toa of Light gave his power to Kapura, Tanma, Dalu, Defilak, Velika (the real Velika) and Balta, creating a new generation of Toa. He then formed a ruling council of Turaga Dume, Helryx, Roodaka, The Shadowed One, a Nynrah Matoran and Nektann.

Paying a visit, Takanuva found his alternate self in deep discussion with Tanma and Roodaka, concerned about the recent appearance of a Panrahk in the city. The Turaga of Light worriedly concluded that the light barriers blocking the Makuta from the city were starting to weaken. He then concluded the meeting, and spoke to Takanuva in private. He immediately recognized his prime universe self, and asked for his help in protecting the island from the Makuta.

After receiving an energy-amplifying Power Lance and an experimental light-shooting weapon, Takanuva insisted on visiting Matoro, who now lived alone in a small Po-Wahi hut. This disgraced version of Matoro had become depressed and embittered by his failure, but Takanuva persuaded him to join his company as an opportunity to redeem himself. Travelling into the long-abandoned Bohrok tunnels in Po-Wahi, Takanuva, Tanma and Matoro encountered and defeated four Rahkshi clad in shadow armor that allowed them to get through the light barriers unscathed. Afterward, however, Makuta himself stepped through the barrier; all of the other Makuta had died, one by one, and Makuta had feasted upon them to survive; he had now become a monstrous amalgamation of his own followers' bodies.
Tanma attacked, destroying his Kraahkan, but Makuta promptly killed him by shattering his body. It was at this point he recognized Takanuva as being from a universe where Makuta's plan to conquer the universe had succeeded, and Matoro had died to save Mata Nui. Upon discovering the sacrifice his alternate self had made, Matoro resolved to do the same, and allowed himself to be drawn into Makuta's body. His willpower proved far greater than that of this world's Makuta, and he killed him from the inside, sacrificing himself in the process.

Takanuva returned alone to the council of the Kingdom, telling them of Matoro's sacrifice, and after ensuring that a statue was made in Matoro's memory, he departed this alternate universe with the help of its version of Brutaka.

Dark Mirror

After passing through the dimensional gate, Takanuva found himself back in Metru Nui, seemingly where he had started his journey. However, he was confused by the amount of statues in the city representing the Toa Mata rather than their Nuva forms, and the presence of an even larger statue in the shape of a Mask of Intangibility. Noticing Kapura walking nearby, the Toa of Light approached the Ta-Matoran. However, Takanuva was confused to see that his friend not only did not recognize him, but was also terrified by his presence.
The Toa tried to ask of the whereabouts of the Turaga and Toa Mahri, but right then Kopaka and Tahu appeared (curiously, in their Mata forms), and the Toa of Ice used his sword to freeze the panicked Kapura from the neck up. Tahu demanded that Takanuva present his identification, and when he could not Kopaka put his blade up to the Toa of Light's neck and arrested him.

Dragging him into the prisons below the Coliseum, the Toa Mata of Fire and Ice incarcerated Takanuva in one of the cells. There, he was shocked to find that his cellmate was none other than his parallel self; still a Matoran in this dystopian universe, Takua had never become a Toa, and when the Vahki failed to discourage his tendency of wandering, he was incarcerated.
After he was freed by his parallel Toa counterpart, Takua explained that 3,500 years prior, a Toa named Tuyet had gained the power of an artifact known as the Nui Stone, which increased her power a hundredfold. She joined forces with Toa Nidhiki, and when their erstwhile ally, Toa Lhikan, uncovered their plot and tried to stop them, the two Toa killed the Toa Mangai of Fire. Afterward, Tuyet took over Metru Nui and brainwashed the other Toa into thinking that their purpose was to dominate rather than protect, and kill any potential dissenters who might pose a threat to the Toa Empire.

After learning of how this dark alternate reality had come to be, Takanuva ventured into the Archives with Takua in the hope of finding and enlisting the help of a shapeshifting Rahi known as Krahka. What he found, however, was that the living library was now more of a museum of conquest, with trophies ranging from the weapons of long-dead enemies to the Mask of Shadows itself, now hung on the wall like a prize. Worse, the stasis tubes now contained the comatose forms of various dissenting citizens, including Turaga Dume himself. Takanuva freed the Turaga of Fire, but the three were then captured by Tuyet herself.

Tuyet forced them further into the Archives. She led Takanuva into a room housing six dilapidated Rahkshi, two Makuta - Krika and Kojol - and a one-armed Exo-Toa. Tuyet was then revealed as Makuta himself - now forced to wear an infected Hau in place of his confiscated Kraahkan. The three Makuta offered to smuggle Takanuva out of the city to find Brutaka, as long as he intercepted the delivery of the Vahi and gave it to them. The Makuta also added that a fanatical Matoran named Jaller was the leader of the caravan.

In order for Takanuva to be able to intercept the caravan, Krika exposed Takanuva to a virus which would (at least temporarily) grant him flight. He then confronted the Toa guarding the caravan, pretending he had been sent by Tuyet. However, they saw through his deception and exposed him.

Later, the caravan was attacked by Lesovikk. With the Mask of Time, he and Takanuva returned to Metru Nui and met with Pohatu, who also opposed Tuyet. They then joined the rest of the resistance group, upon which Pohatu revealed that they planned to mount a full-scale attack against Tuyet. When Takanuva, joined by the resistance and the Makuta, arrived, they attacked the Coliseum. After watching his parallel self perish, he followed the Dark Hunter "Darkness" to the Chamber of Masks. Once inside, Takanuva was confronted by Tuyet, Nui Stone in one hand and Olmak in the other. She had figured out that Takanuva was not from their universe. Takanuva then prepared to fight her. As she battered him, she put on the Olmak. Takanuva fired at her blasts of light and shadow, which she deflected.
Both of them then noticed that numerous species had united and were heading for the Coliseum. He convinced Tuyet that she might be able to start over if she uses the Olmak. She does just that and Takanuva snatched the mask off her face and jumped into the portal. Tuyet tried to pulled him back. She was so filled with rage that she never noticed the portal closing. Takanuva escaped and Tuyet's body was left between the void and the Coliseum and met her death.
Takanuva hovered through the "inter-dimension". He wondered that if Tuyet's death was going to leave the Toa as protectors again, or if the Makuta would take over as dictators. He concluded that he would eventually return to find the answer. He then resumed his journey to Karda Nui to help the Toa Nuva.

toa ignika

After Matoro's death, the Kanohi Ignika, or Mask of Life, fell to the bottom of the Karda Nui swamp. Sensing the presence of hostile forces nearby, it decided to make a body for itself so it could fight if need be. Inspired by the Matoro's heroism, it made itself look like a Toa.
Toa Ignika rocketed up to the sky and aided the Toa against the Makuta, easily defeating Icarax. It later learned that if the universe were not brought into balance again, an automatic power built into the mask would extinguish all life in the universe. Racing against time to awaken Mata Nui, the Toa Nuva turned to Ignika to provide the needed power. Although reluctant to give up his newfound life, Toa Ignika sacrificed itself to awaken the Great Spirit. However, unbeknown to the Ignika, his life-force was unknowingly spared. Therefore extracting itself whilst reawakening Mata Nui directly; in the due process. Forcibly retracting him back into the mask by force after reviving the Great Spirit. This process has repeatedly happen but visually different when Matoro, a Toa of Ice whom seemingly "died", turned him into atoms as well as raw energy whilst reviving Mata Nui. And a "deceased" member of Jovan's Toa team; a Toa whom reluctantly used the mask first hand to save the life force of Mata Nui and the entire universe.
"Toa" Ignika was said to have the personalty of a sheltered child, was very naive, and often let his innocence get the best of him. Althought the mask was technically genderless, "Toa" Ignika considered itself a "he," in honour of Matoro and the other Toa who had worn the Mask of Life. "Toa" Ignika was courageous to the point of recklessness, and even though "he" was very intelligent, "he" was immature at times.
Name given to the Toa Inika after their transformation by the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life, into beings capable of surviving underwater. The title was awarded to the Toa by Defilak, in honour of their efforts to save the city of Mahri Nui from the Barraki. Each Toa Mahri is fitted with special breathing tubes that act as gills and make it possible for them to breathe water, but not air. The six Toa Mahri are Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Matoro, Nuparu, and Hewkii.

Reuniting with the Toa Nuva, the Inika were worried that they would be sent home while the Nuva continued the mission. But the Nuva recognised destiny's hand in what had happened and acknowledged that before they can complete their mission and awaken Mata Nui from his endless sleep, it was the Inika's job to save his life. Axonn then opened a secret passage that lead under the sea so that the Toa Inika could continue their journey.
jaller, toa mahri of fire

At first, Jaller found the Toa's experiences in the Pit to be extremely frustrating. Matoro, now knowing he was the destined wearer of the Mask Of Life, was taking on more of a leadership role. Hahli, happy to be in her native element, kept swimming off on her own. Worst of all, as a Toa of Fire he had to struggle even to use his element in the depths of the sea. Still, Jaller knew the most important thing was the mission they must achieve. He fought bravely against the Barraki, led the evacuation of the Mahri Nui Matoran to Voya Nui, and succeeded in obtaining the Mask of Life and passing it on to Matoro. When Mata Nui died, Matoro insisted the Toa continue to try and save him. Jaller told Matoro to go on while the rest of the Toa held back the Barraki and their armies. The battle that followed was intense and it seemed certain the Toa would lose. Jaller actually prepared to unleash a nova blast of heat and flame which would have wiped out the Barraki, their forces, and the four Toa beside him as a last-ditch effort to give Matoro the time he needed. At the very last moment, Matoro used the power of the Mask of Life to teleport the Toa Mahri back to Metru Nui. Jaller was able to contain his power so that the city was not destroyed.

Powers and Equipment

As a Toa Mahri, Jaller wore the Kanohi Arthron, the Great Mask of Sonar. He carried a Cordak blaster and an aquatic power blade. For a brief time, he was assisted by a Hahnah Crab.
hahli, toa mahri of water

When the Toa Inika became Toa Mahri, Hahli suddenly became the team's strongest member. She was in her element - water - and her skill at swimming and diving made her the best suited to battle the Barraki beneath the sea. Hahli was the one who managed to convince the Matoran of Mahri Nui that the Toa were there to help, not harm, them. When the Toa first encountered the Barraki, she tricked the villains into believing she and her teammates were also escaped prisoners. When the Barraki imprisoned the team, Hahli used her mask to copy the hypnotic power of a sea creature and so slip past the squid that guarded her. After defeating the Barraki Mantax in battle, Hahli fooled him into believing the other Barraki were about to betray him.

Mantax formed an alliance with her and planned to attack his teammates. But her plan backfired when the unexpected interference of Hydraxon made it possible for Mantax to steal the Mask of Life.

Powers and Equipment

As a Toa Mahri, Hahli wore the Kanohi Faxon, the Great Mask of Kindred, which allowed her to duplicate the powers of sea creatures. She carried a Cordak blaster and protosteel talons.
kongu, toa mahri of air

The battle in the Pit was not an easy one for Toa Kongu. His new mask power frightened him, since he never knew what creature he might summon with it (his efforts resulted in a horde of eels suddenly appearing one time, and a primitive, ancient sea beast rising out of the ocean floor another). Kongu was also the only Toa Mahri to suffer an energy-draining sea squid attack. He was saved by Jaller's Hahnah crab, a fact so embarrassing he refuses to discuss it to this day. When the Toa Mahri found the Cordak blasters, Kongu decided to abandon his melee weapon and take two. Asked why he wanted dual blasters, he responded "two hands". Kongu was grief-stricken over Matoro's death, but kept his feelings largely to himself.

After the memorial, he took Matoran Chronicler Kopeke aside and warned him that he had "better deep-carve only nice things" about the deceased Toa of Ice.

Powers and Equipment

As a Toa Mahri, Kongu wore the Kanohi Zatth, the Great Mask of Summoning, which could bring forth sea creatures to aid him. Kongu also carried two Cordak blasters.
matoro, toa mahri of ice

Matoro had spent many years keeping secrets, the result of having heard so many a Turaga Nuju's translator. But the secret he had to keep in the Pit was the hardest of all. Captured by Hydraxon (who mistook him for an escaped prisoner), Matoro was freed by the Maxilos sentry robot - only to discover the robot was possessed by the spirit of Makuta Teridax. Fearing his friends might be killed if they attacked Teridax, or that the Mask of Life might be lost in the struggle, he did not tell the other Toa what he had discovered. Teridax forced Matoro to help him find the body of the Toa Mangai of Water named Tuyet. A corrupt Toa who had once possessed a powerful artefact called a Nui Stone. Teridax wanted the stone, but did not get it, and Matoro finally turned on him and attacked.
Although he could only slow Teridax down, it was long enough for Jaller to give Matoro the Mask of Life. Jaller also told him that Kongu had revealed the truth: Matoro was the destined wearer of the mask. Desperate to save Mata Nui, Matoro raced off with the mask with the Barraki in pursuit. He was too late - Mata Nui had died. But Matoro refused to give up. Diving into the core of the universe, he donned the mask. Its power turned his body to raw energy and then used that energy to restore life to the Great Spirit. Matoro died a hero, perhaps the greatest hero ever known.

Powers and Equipment

As a Toa Mahri, Matoro wore the Kanohi Tryna, the Great Mask of Reanimation, which could bring back the dead to a semblance of life. He carried a Cordak blaster and twin cutters.
nuparu, toa mahri of earth

During the battle beneath the sea, Nuparu teamed with Hewkii to search for the Mask of Life. They stumbled on an eel nest and were ambused and captured by Ehlek. Nuparu used his power to create a pillar of earth to lift them out of their prison, while the two Toa fired Cordak blasters at the monstrous eels who menaced them. During the battle, Hewkii used his mask to make it appear sharks were attacking the eels. This led to a later conflict between Pridak and Ehlek. Nuparu participated in the major battles with Barraki, the severing of the cord linking Voya Nui to Mahri Nui, and the desperate attempt to buy time for Matoro to save the universe. After the Toa Mahri were teleported back to Metru Nui, he was the first to notice that Matoro was not among them.

Nuparu gave the eulogy for Matoro at the memorial service held in the Metru Nui coliseum. He and Hewkii later worked together on a carved statue to honour their fallen friend.

Powers and Equipment

As a Toa Mahri, Nuparu wore the Kanohi Volitak, the Great Mask of Stealth, and carried a Cordak blaster and a shield.
hewkii, toa mahri of stone

The very last place a Toa of Stone wants to be is underwater. Despite this, Toa Hewkii scored more than his share of victories while in the Pit, helping to save his fellow Toa Mahri and pave the way for the revival of Mata Nui. Among Hewkii's great deeds as a Toa Mahri were twice defeating a 300-foot long venom eel; battling the ferocious Gadunka; and overcoming an entire school of Takea sharks to stop them from pursuing Matoro. When Jaller was about to go nova and destroy both the Barraki and the Toa Mahri, Hewkii began to protest. Then he backed off, realising that it was the only thing to do, and that sometimes being the leader meant making tough choices. Fortunately, the actions of Toa Matoro saved the entire team and the universe.

History of the Toa Mahri

Quest for the Mask of Life
Quest for the Mask of Life
Journeying through the cord, the Toa Inika fought off a group of savage beings called Zyglak. Eventually, they arrived in the Pit, upon which they were transformed by a pulse of energy from the Mask of Life into water-breathing versions of themselves. They then discovered a Matoran city, called Mahri Nui, and tried to convince its inhabitants that they meant no harm. Wary of the Toa, the Matoran told them to go free the Fields of Air; then they would trust them. Matoro stayed behind to continue negotiations with the Matoran, while the others headed for the fields.

When they got there, they were intercepted by the Barraki and their armies of sea creatures. The Barraki then took the five Toa with them to a series of sea caves, and then departed. They quickly proceeded to escape, by various methods. Upon leaving the caves, Jaller and Kongu were ambushed by Kalmah and Carapar, who had come back to check on them. Kongu was almost killed by a squid, but was saved by a Hahnah Crab that had befriended Jaller. He then used his Mask of Summoning to call forth a monstrous creature from ancient times out of slumber, which quickly broke up the fight. The Barraki retreated, and Jaller and Kongu reunited with the other Toa, who then equipped themselves with weapons found in a cave. During this time, the Matoran of Mahri Nui finally began to trust the Toa, and their leader, Defilak, bestowed the the Toa with the title of Toa Mahri in gratitude of their struggles against the Barraki.

When Matoro informed the other Toa that they would have to destroy the Stone Cord to accomplish their mission, they decided to evacuate the Matoran to Voya Nui. While escorting them up the Cord, the Toa were ambushed by their old enemies, the Piraka, who had been mutated into snake-like forms. However, the marauders were defeated by Axonn, who then brought the Matoran the rest of the way to the surface. He then informed the Toa Mahri that he would keep the Matoran safe by sheltering them in the caves of Voya Nui, while the island returned to its original location. He also provided the Toa with a large insectoid creature to take them back to the Pit quickly.

When they arrived in the Pit, a large-scale battle between them, the Barraki, Gadunka, Hydraxon, and Maxilos began. During the fight, Jaller and Matoro were able to obtain the Mask of Life, and withdrew to a rendezvous with the other Toa near Mahri Nui. They then destroyed the Stone Cord, and Voya Nui began to sink beneath the sea and return to its original location, with the Toa following it and being pursued by the Barraki. But as they swam after the island, they all felt the universe change abruptly as Mata Nui died.

Matoro decided to follow Voya Nui, believing that something could still be done. Jaller told Matoro to go on ahead without the rest of the team, who would stay behind to fight the Barraki. Knowing that the five Toa could not win against the Barraki and their armies, Jaller decided to perform a Nova Blast, a last resort that would kill the Barraki, most of their sea creatures, and the Toa. But before he did so, the Toa Mahri were suddenly teleported back to Metru Nui, and found they were able to breathe air again. They then realised that Matoro had used the Mask of Life to revive Mata Nui and save the other Toa. Turaga Vakama then approached and explained that he had seen the end of Matoro in a vision. They then headed for the Coliseum and made preparations for a memorial service.

After their adventures in Voya Nui and Mahri Nui, Jaller and the other Toa Mahri served as guardians of Metru Nui. During that time, they battled the Toa Hagah and a massive rahi summoned by Kualus. After helping the Toa Hagah get under the Coliseum, Nuparu, Jaller, and Hahli were dispatched on a mission by Helryx to Artidax to summon all of the Visorak there. During that time, they met Takadox, who hypnotised all three into a trance. While still under Takadox's influence, Jaller was mentally contacted by Makuta, who snapped the Toa out of his trance who was still in Takadox's trance. Jaller then hurled fireballs at both Hahli and Nuparu freeing both of them from their induced state, and the three began swimming back to Metru Nui. After arriving, the three Toa found Metru Nui under attack by the Brotherhood of Makuta. Turaga Vakama told the Toa Mahri about his plan to drive the Rahkshi by them finding Krakua, a Toa of Sonics, and asking him to awaken a group of Bohrok residing in the Archives. After Hahli found Krakua and told him of the Turaga's plan, she then began to rouse the sea in attempt to wreck the Brotherhood's fleet, but a storm suddenly started beyond the city walls, and tossed the fleet around.

Three vehicles then arrived above the city, which were Toa Nuva and Takanuva riding on the Rockoh T3, Jetrax T6, and Axalara T9. With the Toa Nuva's help, the Toa Mahri and the Order of Mata Nui drove the invaders back. After the surviving invaders departed, the Toa Nuva confirmed that the Great Spirit Mata Nui had been awakened, and Turaga Dume and Vakama both declared the following day to be one of grand celebration inside the Coliseum.
However, the event was interrupted by the presence of Makuta, who announced that he had taken over the body of the Great Spirit.

When the Kardas Dragon reached Metru Nui, the Toa Mahri defeated and captured him, but were still uneasy about Takanuva's mysterious disappearance. Later on, when the Toa Hagah arrived to destroy the Coliseum, the Toa Mahri engaged them but stopped when the battle started getting out of control. They then helped the Toa Hagah to get below the Coliseum to find Makuta Teridax. Johmak, An Order of Mata Nui agent, then gave them the Heart of the Visorak and what to do with it. Hewkii and Kongu stayed in Metru Nui while Jaller, Hahli and Nuparu headed to Artidax. However, while Hewkii and Kongu were on patrol, the black armoured female ambushed them and knocked them unconscious. Takadox was waiting for them and used his hypnosis powers to keep them on the island while he escaped with their ship.
But Teridax helped free Jaller from his trance who helped Nuparu and Hahli. They managed to escape Artidax by using Nuparu's earth power to create a bridge. Afterwards they started making their way back to Metru Nui. Once back, they fought the Brotherhood with the Order of Mata Nui and the Toa Nuva. Soon after, they along with all the Matoran, in the Coliseum joined in the celebration of Mata Nui's awakening, but were interrupted by Teridax, who had taken over Mata Nui's body.

Reign of Shadows
Reign of Shadows

The Toa Mahri were later sent to Zakaz by the Order of Mata Nui. The five Toa observed an assembly of Skakdi cheering to reject the Great Spirit and take control of the universe. The Skakdi then dropped a Vortixx, a Zyglak, a Stelt worker, and the Piraka into a cylinder of Energized Protodermis, fusing them all together. Once the strange being emerged from the cylinder and it started to 'feed' in some way, the Toa Mahri suddenly surrendered to the Skakdi, saying they were the superior race. They later exited the Matoran Universe with their new "master" to Spherus Magna, where the being created a fortress from thin air using the nearby cliffs.

Shortly afterwards, Annona, the Dream Eater, attacked the fortress, consuming the dreams of every Skakdi in the fortress and driving them mad. The Skakdi fusion's power automatically granted the Skakdi's wishes, causing the fortress to dissolve and aberrations to appear in the region. During the confusion, the fusion's hold over the Toa Mahri was broken, and they were released from their trance.

The Great Rescue

Upon returning to Metru Nui on a raft of transport parts and dead Karzahni branches, the Toa Metru found a city very different from the one they left: the bioquake during the cataclysm had not only damaged several of the buildings, but also freed most Rahi from where they had been kept in the Archives. Even more unsettling were the numerous green spider webs covering the city from top to bottom. Nevertheless, Vakama (believing he had failed the Matoran by allowing their capture and Lhikan by not preventing his death) had become dead-set on rescuing the Matoran and, despite their uneasiness, none of the other Toa would object enough to dissuade him from marching them directly to the Coliseum.

Unfortunately, the Coliseum had become the nesting grounds of the makers of the spider webs - hordes of Visorak who had taken over the city. The Toa were quickly overtaken and captured, and upon orders from their King, Sidorak (with input from his viceroy, Roodaka), the Visorak bound the Toa in cocoons, injected them with their venom and strung them up high above the city. Soon enough, the venom began to take effect, mutating the Toa into horrific bestial forms and causing them to tear out of their cocoons. Just as they were falling to their certain doom, they were caught in midair by the Rahaga.

The Rahaga informed the Toa that they were now Toa Hordika, half-beasts that would have to fight to keep their primal rage in check. The Toa also discovered that their powers were also much more limited than they were before. The Rahaga offered to aid the Toa, telling them of a Rahi in Metru Nui called Keetongu who could reverse their mutations... if he even existed.

The bestial Toa, however, agreed that the Matoran came first, so they would deal with their mutations later. To that end, they formed a plan to build airships that would bring the Matoran to Mata Nui and began scouring the city for transport parts and other supplies they would need. However, they not only had to fight against the Visorak hunting them down, but each had their own problems with their new feral sides. Vakama took the mutations especially hard, as he saw them as the latest in a long string of failures. In the meantime, Roodaka placed information where the Toa would find it: information that stated how Nuhrii, Vhisola, Ahkmou and the other Matoran that knew the place of the Great Disks were the ones meant to be Toa, but that Teridax had influenced Lhikan to change his mind so that the destined heroes would never gain power.

Feeling like an impostor as well as a failure (and not being helped by the other Toa's complaining about their situation and his leadership), Vakama briefly considered abandoning them and trying to rescue the Matoran himself, but realized how futile it would be. At that point, Roodaka abducted him and offered him nothing less than command of the Visorak horde. Already starting to resent his fellow Toa due to their constant criticisms and their harshness with him, Vakama saw a chance to take a well-trained army and command them to release the Matoran, and Roodaka encouraged him with the idea that leadership meant blind obedience of the followers, as opposed to the stubborn opposition that the other Toa often gave.
Giving in to his Rahi side, the Toa Hordika of Fire accepted the position, but Roodaka knew Sidorak would not be so easily sold on the idea. She had Vakama kidnap the Rahaga (save Norik, who was left behind to "send a message") as proof of his intentions and, by sweetening the deal with acceptance of Sidorak's long-denied marriage proposals and promises of the other Toa Hordika becoming commanders, Roodaka got Sidorak to welcome Vakama into the army.

Meanwhile, the Rahaga and Toa Hordika decided it was time to pick up the search for Keetongu, as it might be the only way to save Vakama. Once the Rahaga were captured, Norik took the information they had found and led the Toa to a mountain of ice hidden deep within Ko-Metru, where they found the not-so-mythical Rahi. After Keetongu heard their tale and how they wanted to help their friend, he agreed to join them- but he would not cure them of their mutations yet. They would need them in the upcoming battle.

Together, the Toa Hordika, Norik and Keetongu stormed the Coliseum. While Norik freed the other Rahaga and Keetongu went after Sidorak and Roodaka, the Toa fought off the Visorak in search of the Matoran- except for Matau, who went off on his own to face Vakama who was now acting more and more like an animal. At the top of the Coliseum's highest spire, Matau tried to talk down Vakama apologizing for doubting his capability as a leader, reminding him of the Toa's friendship and their strength in unity- even as Vakama tried to kill him.
Only when the Toa Hordika of Air was close to falling to his death did his words got through, and as Matau lost his grip and started to plummet to the Coliseum floor below, Vakama leapt down and caught him, using Visorak webbing as a bungee cord to keep them from impacting.

Meanwhile, the other Toa found the Matoran - only to be confronted by Roodaka, who had gotten rid of Sidorak and was now sole leader of the Visorak. Matau joined the face-off and led the other four Toa in blasting Roodaka with their Rhotuka spinners. Vakama also entered the fight, seemingly on the side of Roodaka, but he turned on her and threatened to fire his own Rhotuka.
Roodaka warned that she would order the Visorak to kill them if she died, but her rule was not as complete as she thought; Vakama was still the horde's commander and he gave the order to disband. As Roodaka was a traitor who brought their King to his death and because the Visorak hated Roodaka, the Visorak complied and Roodaka was left alone. Vakama made good on his threat to fire his Rhotuka, but Norik realised too late that she carried a piece of Teridax's prison: since it had now absorbed all six elemental powers, the prison's seal was broken and Teridax was free again.

But Teridax left the Toa alone for the time being and, with the Toa Hordika cured and becoming Toa Metru again, they, the Rahaga and Keetongu all worked together to finish the airships they were building and load them with the Matoran, preparing to bring them to their new home of Mata Nui.

Upon returning to Metru Nui, The Toa Metru found themselves captured by the Visorak hordes. After being ambushed, the Toa were strung up in cocoons and mutated into half Toa, half Rahi monsters known as Toa Hordika. After their mutation, the cords suspending their cocoons were snapped. The cocoons fell to what would have been the Toa's death, but were caught at the last minute by the Rahaga. The Rahaga explained to them that if the Hordika Venom was not neutralized, they would remain Toa Hordika forever. The Rahaga also tells them about Keetongu, a mythical Rahi that could turn them back into Toa Metru again.

When Nokama was transformed into a Hordika she saw positive things about being half-animal, although she had frequent rages. Unlike her friends, Nokama was connected more and more to the Rahi around, worrying Rahaga Gaaki. She worried that Nokama might not want to become a Toa Metru again.

However, the Toa Hordika decided to rescue the Matoran before finding Keetongu. Nokama, who was once the most peaceful of the Toa, now found it hard to the control Rahi side. She became the leader of the Toa Hordika after Vakama betrayed them and joined Roodaka and Sidorak, the leaders of the Visorak. After Vakama's betrayal, the Toa Hordika gave in and decided to find Keetongu, believing that he was the only hope for Vakama now. After a very long and hard search, the five Hordika and the Rahaga located Keetongu, enlisting his help in the fight against the hordes. Nokama led an attack on the Coliseum, which had become the Visorak stronghold.
The fight was hard for the Hordika, who had to control their Rahi sides while fighting the Visorak. While Keetongu fought Sidorak and Roodaka, Matau left and managed to convince Vakama that they needed to work in unity with each other to succeed. After Keetongu killed Sidorak. Roodaka tricked the Hordika into firing their elemental Rhotuka spinners at her. She carried a piece of Protodermis carved from the seal that had trapped Makuta, thus when the elemental spinners hit her, this undid the seal on Makuta's prison. Shortly afterward, Keetongu turned them back into Toa Metru, and they brought the rest of the Matoran to Mata Nui.

As a Toa Hordika, Matau was the one most eager to seek out Keetongu. His Fang Blades could cut through most substances, and serve to charge his Air Rhotuka. He was willing to do anything to reverse his mutation and become a Toa Metru again. Sickened by the transformation into Hordika, Matau however still retained his funny side. He blamed Vakama for his transformation and often called him "Fire-Spitter" or "Smelt-Head". During his time with the others and the incident of the Great Temple, he finally realised what he had done wrong and vowed with the other Toa that they would do whatever it took to rescue Vakama, who, from their point of view, had given in to his Hordika side.
At the last battle against the Visorak, Matau finally understood the meaning of Unity, how hard is it to be a leader and no matter how he looks, there is always hope. It was also he who saved Vakama from being plunged into the shadows by humbly apologizing for his previous behavior. Matau was finally returned to his Toa form by the great Rahi Keetongu. He helped load the Matoran onto Airships to take them to Mata Nui.

Matau, along with the other Toa Metru, sacrificed his Toa power to awaken the Matoran. Using the last of his Toa power turned him into a Turaga. Fortunately, on their first visit to Mata Nui, the Toa Metru had given a little of their power into Toa Stones and scattered them about the island.

As a Toa Hordika, Nuju, used to being in control of his emotions, was among those most anxious to be cured of his mutation. Nuju was taught the language of the flying Rahi, which he used as a Turaga, by Kualus, who spoke it before him. Nuju's tools were Hordika Teeth, which he used to summon flying Rahi or to charge his Ice Rhotuka.
Toa Hordika Nuju and Rahaga Kualus searched for Vahki Transport parts in Ko-Metru, and eventually ran into Onewa, Pouks, Krahka, and a Tahtorak. They went to the battle unfolding at a hangar in Le-Metru, and the Toa Hordika won the battle.

Later, Nuju and the other Toa, excluding Vakama, went searching for the mythical Rahi Keetongu, and found him in Ko-Metru. Nuju and the others fought in the final battle against the Visorak and one of Nuju's ice spinners contributed to the Toa Hordika's attempt to destroy Roodaka, ending up in the freeing of Makuta. Keetongu restored the Toa Hordika to their original forms, and at some point Kualus taught him the language of the birds.

After saying their goodbyes, Nuju, along with the other Toa Metru, boarded the airships, which would carry the Matoran to Mata Nui. It was here when Nuju began speaking in the language of birds, as a grim reminder to the other Toa about their adventures.

When the Toa Metru came back to Metru Nui, their beloved city was in a web of shadows. Whenua believed that the Onu-Metru Archives had been breached, with the exotic Rahi beasts loose on the island city. Vakama was very mad at Whenua for not remembering the clues pointing to Visorak inhabiting the city. After a hard journey to the Coliseum, spider-like creatures called Visorak captured the six Toa and trapped them in web cages containing Hordika venom, which transformed them into Toa Hordika and sent them falling to their death when the webs broke open. Luckily, 6 mysterious beings, called Rahaga, caught the Toa in mid-air and set them down safely to the ground in Ga-Metru. Norik, the leader of the Rahaga, told the Toa that they were now Toa Hordika. Norik told them that their only way to change back is to find a mythical Rahi called Keetongu, which is said to have the power to reverse anything the Visorak have done.

Whenua went on a journey with Bomonga. They were in the Archives, and Bomonga showed a little about capturing and saving Rahi. But at some point, they encountered two Kahgarak, that trapped them into the Field of Shadow. Also a Kahgarak was swallowed in, lighting hope in the two friends. They started to follow the Kahgarak. They found their way out, but only to find themselves on the top of a Visorak Tower, which later became the Tower of Toa, in Sidorak's feet. Luckily, the others came to help and fought and won the tower for themselves, freeing Whenua and Bomonga.
They then journeyed back to the Archives to continue their mission. They soon encountered Nuju and Kualus, who were running from another Kahgarak. The two Toa and Rahaga went into a room and shut the door and started discussing, but Visorak Vohtarak attacked. When encountering Kahgarak too, Whenua gave up to his Rahi side and fired a blast so powerful, it destroyed the room. Onewa and Vakama saved them later.

Whenua also took part in finding the Avohkii.

Along the way, they were betrayed by Vakama leaving the Toa un-united. They found Keetongu, who agreed to assist the Toa rescue Vakama. They arrived at the Coliseum, battled the Visorak, and with a last minute strategy by Matau, they got Vakama back on their side. They then defeated Roodaka, viceroy of the Visorak. Keetongu then cured all the Toa of the Visorak venom and then they resumed their great rescue of the sleeping Matoran. When they were on the way to the island of Mata Nui, Onewa saw that Makuta's prison was empty. Vakama said that Makuta would follow them to the new island, and he was right. They later sacrificed their powers to wake up the Matoran, and became Turaga, like Toa Lhikan did to them.

While sailing on the Silver Sea, the Toa's boat was devastated by a storm. However, they all survived and eventually landed on the shores of Metru Nui. They then started traveling inland, Vakama confident in that they would simply gather the remaining Matoran and leave; however, they were attacked by a group of Visorak, knocked out, and brought before Sidorak and Roodaka. They were then hung in cocoons and injected with Visorak venom. Soon after, the venom had taken effect, transforming them into bestial forms and causing them to break out of their cocoons and plummet to their certain doom. However, the Toa were then saved by the Rahaga.

While searching for levitation disks in Po-Metru, Onewa stumbled upon evidence that he and his team might not have been meant to be the Toa Metru. When Vakama left and Norik was unable to calm him down Onewa expressed concern over Vakama finding a really bad destiny. Vakama's betrayel also taught Onewa the potential consequences of constant argument.
He and the others, led by Norik, the last remaining Rahaga, embarked on a journey to find Keetongu, and were successful in persuading him to help them against the Visorak. In the final battle, Onewa killed many Visorak, and aided the others in destroying Roodaka and, unwittingly, releasing Makuta. He was then transformed back into a Toa Metru by Keetongu, and then, with close to 1,000 sleeping villagers, he returned to the island of Mata Nui to start a new life.

quest for the mask of light
quest for the mask of light

Long after salvaging parts to build their transport Airships to rescue the Matoran population, the Rahaga had assigned the Toa Hordika to retrieve all the Makoki stones which the Rahaga had hidden all around the city from the Visorak. The Toa had successfully retrieved all six stones and found the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light, which gave off a bright glow. Fearing that the glow would attract the attention of the Visorak, Toa Hordika Onewa used his Rhotuka Spinner to conceal the mask in a block of stone.

Hiding of the Mask
Hiding of the Mask

After the Toa Hordika were changed back to Toa Metru and transported the Matoran to the safety of Mata Nui, Vakama later had a vision concerning the Avohkii's use in the future. In his vision, he discovered that the mask was to be kept hidden from the Matoran. One day, an adventurous Matoran would find the mask, and they would take on the role of Herald of the Seventh Toa, charged with bringing the mask to its rightful owner, the Toa of Light. Therefore, the Turaga carved the stone shelled over the mask into a warning totem, placed it on the far end of a lava tunnel, and waited for the day when destiny signalled the mask was to be used.

karzahni
After losing sight of the Toa when they escaped the cord, Karzahni was mutated by the Pit Mutagen into his underwater form.

He wandered the Pit until he came across Toa Lesovikk and the Ta-Matoran Sarda. Needing to hone his battle skills, he attacked Lesovikk with his burning chains. Luckily, Lesovikk managed to snap the chains (something that stunned Karzahni) after Sarda called him a hero, something he hadn't been called in centuries. Then, with new-found confidence, Lesovikk rose and charged to continue his battle with Karzahni. Lesovikk escaped, but he vowed to return and destroy Karzahni rather than let him threaten any Matoran again.
Soon after, Karzahni overheard a group - including two Toa and a robot (Matoro, Tuyet, and Maxilos) - discussing the Staff of Artakha. Hating anything to do with his brother, he immediately attacked and defeated the Toa. However, the robot was being possessed by the evil Makuta Teridax, and the two beings began to fight. Although Makuta won at first and turned Karzahni's army of Manas against each other, Karzahni made Makuta scream in terror by giving him a vision of Mata Nui awakening and delivering his wrath.

After using his mask power, Karzahni soon found himself overpowered by Makuta/Maxilos, who had quickly recovered from his vision. After striking him hard, Makuta used his telepathic abilities to tear through Karzahni's already twisted mind, destroying any vestige of sanity left in the overlord. He then sent his downed opponent hurtling out of sight.

Karzahni, wounded from his encounter with Makuta, took refuge inside a cave. Toa Lesovikk, Sarda, and Idris followed him, but before they could destroy him altogether he made a last attempt on Lesovikk. Although he was mentally shattered, he used his mask to show Lesovikk a life where he had successfully saved his friends from death. Lesovikk, overjoyed to "see" his friends again, was unable to break the trance, but a small inaccuracy in its structure made him recognize the ploy and shake off the vision. Karzahni ran after the Matoran, getting captured by Lesovikk in the makeshift trap the Matoran had rigged. The Toa decided to spare his life and leave him with his shattered mind, and right afterwards, Botar appeared and took him away. He was left on Daxia, being heavily guarded. There, the Order of Mata Nui hopes to extract information from him that could be used to undo the effects of the Brotherhood of Makuta's mutation experiments. Karzahni was scheduled to go to the Pit after his interrogation. Later, when Botar's replacement sent the message to Hydraxon, he "deposited" Roodaka and Karzahni into the Pit.

transformations of the mask of life
During the high stakes of the Matoran Universe, the Ignika was unsure of his sacrificial purpose; for Mata Nui, and the entirety of the known universe. So he innocently transformed individual living creatures as a means of escape from his own purpose.
Native Guardians of the Mask of Life on Voya Nui
Protodax - Created by the Mask of Life.

A Toa-sized version of a protodite, enlarged by the power of the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life, to serve as another guardian of the mask. Protodax are wild and savage by nature, with the unique ability to split into two beings of equal size and strength anytime they are physically struck (resulting in rapid multiplication in battle). The Toa Inika had battled Protodax, with the creatures being driven off by by laser bursts from Umbra.
Umbra - Created by the Great Beings.

One of the Guardians of the Kanohi Ignika. Umbra was the first sentinel put in place by the Great Beings to guard the mask 100,000 years ago and continues to serve to the present day. Umbra's powers include the ability to transform into a beam of light. He also possesses skates that let him move at superspeed, a staff that fires lasers, and a Rhotuka Spinner that can create hard light projections. Umbra encountered the Toa Inika and was defeated by them.

After the defeat of Makuta Teridax, Umbra, along with the rest of the inhabitants in the Matoran Universe, immigrated to Spherus Magna. There, Umbra will continue guarding the Ignika.
Vezon and Fenrakk - Created by the Mask of Life.

Upon arriving on the island, the Mask of Life allowed Vezon to reach it. Once he did, the mask "cursed" him, giving him various powers and fusing him to both itself and an enlarged Fenrakk spider, forcibly making him one of the Ignika's guardians. It also gave him the ability to absorb kinetic energy and see limitedly into the future, and ensured he could not die as long as it was fused to his head. The Ignika did not consciously give him this power, but his contact with it also allowed him to use Great Kanohi in the future, unlike most Skakdi who did not have the mental discipline to.

Once the other Piraka arrived, only months after Vezon did, the Ignika turned silver as it began its countdown to the destruction of all life in the universe. Weeks afterward, the Piraka made their way down to the Chamber of Life and were defeated by Vezon with his use of the Spear of Fusion. He fused Vezok and Reidak together and caused the Piraka Fusion to fight the others, defeating them. He then defused Vezok and Reidak, leaving them unconscious.

Moments after, the Toa Inika arrived and battled Vezon and Fenrakk. The Inika managed to push Vezon and Fenrakk into a pool of lava, and he sunk underneath, seemingly dead. But Vezon could not die as long as the Mask of Life was fused to his head. Through another power the Mask of Life had given them, Fenrakk transformed into the Kardas Dragon. Vezon was not transformed however, as he was not fused to Kardas.

At this point, Jaller suggested to Kongu that he use his Suletu to siphon the thoughts of the Ignika into Vezon's mind. When Vezon saw that the Ignika resented him and wanted to be with Matoro, he became infuriated and attempted to kill Matoro. But Jaller used a special Zamor given to them by Axonn. The Zamor froze Vezon and Kardas in time and space temporarily. During this brief period, Matoro was able to remove the Mask of Life from Vezon. However, after the Zamor's effect wore off, the Kardas Dragon managed to knock the Kanohi out of Matoro's hand.
The Ignika then flew to the surface of Voya Nui and plunged underwater, heading for Mahri Nui. Kardas left for the surface as well, leaving Vezon and the other Piraka unconscious in the chamber. When the Piraka woke up, Vezon was still knocked out. Vezok stole the Spear of Fusion from him and attempted to fuse Vezon back into himself, but Reidak stopped him and snapped the spear in half. Later, Vezon woke up and found the spear in pieces. Using its own power on itself, he mended it.
Rahi Exposed to the Mask of Life
Gadunka - Exposed by the Mask of Life.

This specific Gadunka was originally a normal, one-inch Gandunka that scuttled around the seafloor of the Pit. When Nocturn placed the Kanohi Ignika on the ground near it, Gadunka crawled under the mask as shelter, unknowingly exposing itself to the Kanohi's energy. After Nocturn left with the Mask of Life, the beast began to grow until it reached a gigantic size.

Gadunka later battled Toa Mahri Hewkii to try and claim the Ignika, and was easily defeating the Toa of Stone until Nuparu and Hahli came, the latter sweeping Gadunka away with a tidal wave.
Later, it challenged the Toa Mahri again with the 300-foot Venom Eel. Gadunka again knocked Hewkii unconscious and was battering Nuparu when it saw the Ignika. It took the Mask of Life from Matoro, causing itself to devolve back to its original tiny form. After the incident, it was eaten by a Takea Shark.

Personality and Traits

Despite being enlarged, Gadunka's intelligence had not changed. It was still driven by the two thoughts it had before: eat and survive. It, along with the rest of its species, was also territorial, willing to defeat any competition that got in its way for any small piece of land.

Powers and Equipment

This enlarged Rahi possessed sharp teeth, powerful claws, and large eyes. After it was enlarged, Gadunka acquired a squid Launcher by picking it up after finding it on the ground. It also gained the ability to devolve any beings back to their original form. This also applied to Gadunka.
